Thinking about building my own light hood. Is it acceptable to use standard energy saver light bulbs. I was thinking of having about 8 20watt 6500k bulbs for a 3 foot planted tank. Would that be enough? Also does the hood need to be white or reflective? Regards Chris

Good one, Now you can start to slowly populate your tank. Start off with some hardy fishes first. Lots of plants absorb alot of nitrates too.

When using PPMD, does it mean I don't need to used another fert. ie fert balls or daltons aquatic mix?

Do I need a protein skimmer for a small 50ltr rock pool tank? I was thinking about going to raglan and getting small rock pool animals and the saltwater from there too.

Crayfish will need to be kept at a temp below 20degreeC. Might be tricky in the summer months.

feed them BBS 'baby brine shrimp' and they will double in size in a week

Sounds like gill flukes. Search gill flukes on this site for more advise.

What about tank temp ph. Any changes in these to tigger spawning?

Just keep a close eye on yr nitrites and nitrates. They can get up and over max VERY VERY quickly with a Oscar in a small tank.

Could be your noodles and pumice stuff are leaching dask particles. Also sounds like your media is upside down in the filter. Try in the bottom tray one sponge and noodles on it. Middle tray the pumice stuff. Top tray filter wool carbon filter wool.

In the past, I have seen turltes in a lake in Hamilton City. Is this unusally and are they likely to survive?

I got the cf1000. I throw the plastic bio balls away. The Bottom tray has the blue sponge(coarse one) followed by Ceramic noodles. The idea of the sponge first is to diffuse the water flow before it hits the noodles. Top tray has the Black sponge(fine one) followed by filter wool. If I am using carbon, I put it inbetween the black sponge and the filter wool.

'Brightwater' gravel is suppose to buffer back down to 6.8

Is it possible that the magnet on the impellor got de-magetised. If you got two of the same external filter try swapping the impellors around and see if the fault follows the impellor.
