I think it comes from Karbonat Haerte which is German for carbonate hardness.
  2. No, it will be fine as long as the base is good. With 12mm glass you have extra strength as well.
  3. 10mm or 20mm will make no difference. Polystyrene does not fix much if any of the unevenness or twist in a stand. It's only purpose is to stop a piece of grit or a screw head creating a pressure point on the bottom glass causing it to break. If you put your hand on a piece of polystyrene and push, you will find it takes quite a bit of force to squash it even a little bit. The force per square mm your tank applies to the polystyrene is not enough to deform it. Therefore it does little or nothing to fix bung stands. That's why it is so important to get the stand as perfect as possible. Any errors in the stand cause extra stress on the glass in the tank.

Watch out for many of these pH buffers. Most of them are phosphate based. Using them will inhibit plant growth and can lead to massive algae outbreaks. Normally the phosphate level is so high algae cannot break out but as the buffering capacity drops it can happen. I used it once a long long time ago before I was better educated. Out of interest, I measured the phosphate level and it was 400ppm. I had to dilute it 100:1 before my test kit would read a sensible value...

    PMDD

I put my nitrate in a separate bottle so it can be easily adjusted without having to modify the main mixture.

  8. But mine was 10 years ago so I guess I'm out of contention...

    Purigen

I'd try about 1/4 of a teaspoon in enough water to cover the Purigen for 4-6 hours then rinse thoroughly.
  10. Or rated 'Rx' where x = nobody else within a long distance.
  11. Hmm, would have been ok as long as the audio was muted...
  12. I'm about to start using them. I've just had a growth above my wrist diagnosed as a form of dermatitis. Not bad getting away with no infections for 15 years...
  13. Disk Smith probably has a kitset you could buy to do the job.
  14. Nah, mine was in the garage so it really doesn't count. I lost about 1/2 the water in the system as the tank overflows were set to 50% of the tank height just in case anything went wrong. So the sump at 400L (empty) and about half the tank volumes put it at just over 3500L. Didn't look like much as most of it had drained away by the time I noticed. Can't beat a concrete floor in your fishroom...
  15. Did I mention my fishroom flood?? 7000L of tanks and the central filter sprung a leak... Doesn't count though as it was in the garage.
  16. My worst was filling my 1200L tank. I dropped the level to about 50% during the clean. Set it to filling which takes about 30 minutes. Went outside for a minute to check the fishroom. An hour and a half later thought bugger I left the tank filling. Stepped inside the front door to squishy carpet. Around 1200L of water on the lounge floor - nice. It took 3 days to dry out. Needless to say I never did it again. It caused a lot of damage. It stained the carpet, made and custom-wood furniture swell up including my speakers and smelled bad... Also the tank temp dropped to 20, not so good for discus. They all survived fine though.

    Red Danio's

There will be no more discussion on the matter on this site. You have been advised: The fish are not GE. They are not Glofish. They are not dyed. End of story, no more discussion and no more opinions as they don't matter. The facts have been presented and that is that. Any new threads generated will be removed.
  18. I didn't do anything special with the ones I caught last time. Just tossed them in a normal tropical tank and off they went. Had them breeding no worries. I wouldn't worry too much about the temperature. When chasing the fish round the swamp to catch them the temperature changes all over the place. The fish handle it ok so are used to rapid temperature change. They are very hardy fish and I had no trouble breeding them at all. I was using very pure water though with an almost neutral pH. Possibly similar to the environment they live in - it would be interesting to test the water to see what it's like.
  19. Never had any problems with bulb options on 5 footers. A 5 foot tube has nearly twice the light output of a 4 footer and for less than half as much more power. Means you get more light for your buck...
  20. You should be able to get one from an electrical supplier for $25-30 (for a double with tubes). And yes, 5 foot fittings are as common as.
  21. Ouch, thats expensive!! (not the $10)...
  22. And TLD965 should be around $20-25. Not quite as bright but much better colour rendering and more natural than the TLD865. Either will work just as well, it really comes down to personal preference. As stated above, you are pretty unlikely to find a 25" tube.
