  1. Ahhhh Janelle that's so funny. I just got my fighty boy an Elite 5 filter too. He seems a little bit peeved about the current - he has to stick his head in the java moss when he wants to sleep now.

    fish pics

These pictures are gorgeous! What type of camera do you have?
  3. I haven't had any major problems but... Siamese fighters die when you do water changes with too cold water. I also learnt a good lesson: Siamese fighters miraculously come back to life when put back in warmer water!
  4. My male betta is a grump and fights anyone who goes in his tank. I'm not sure they're a good community fish. Algae eaters can be chasey at times too, so keep an eye on who yours decides to bully. Cories are happier in larger groups of the same species, I'd say get yours at least 3 friends. I think glass catfish need larger groups than 4 to be happy. Yeah, nice size tank. I think some people might argue that you're over stocking though.

    Some Pleco pics

Awesome photos, I especially like the goldies big fat belly! Plecs are so cute.
  6. This does show they are actively tracking people down though. IMO anyone who has them should probably go forward, otherwise if they find a hint you might have them (trademe feedback maybe?) they'll come banging on your door at 8am! Oh, and on the third link down, Cichlid7 posted that he'd just bought 5! Wasn't he claiming not to have any? Lol. really guys, it's easily accessible information.
  7. If you do a forum search for glo danios, in the 2nd link there is a post from you Milet, claiming you are breeding them. So are you really that surprised Maf was able to find out you had them?
  8. Don't give them spiders as they can bite the froggies. I used to give my whistlers flies I caught myself in summer and petshop flies in winter. If you keep the container in your fridge (if Mum will let you) they hatch slower or hot water cylinder cupboard to hatch faster.
  9. Any livebearer? I've heard of swords and platies being used too.
  10. I kinda disagree, its like with the glass kuhlis... If you can get them from a shop, you'd assume they were fine. I think it's the importer who brought them in that should take more responsibility. Even if they DID think they were dyed, that's such a horribly cruel practise you'd hope the NZ tropical fish industry wouldn't support!
  11. I hear they can be eyeball eaters.
  12. My neons kept getting bloated when I first got them. If you feed them flake, crunch it up into teeney pieces or soak it before giving it to them, it seems to swell up in their bellies 'cos they're greedy and don't stop eating ever! As Caryl says, peas are good for constipation but my neons don't really seem interested in peas, especially since they sink to the bottom. Neons aren't a very resilient fish, they're bred in masses without much care for quality, so don't blame yourself for his death! Apparently cardinals are tougher, but also more expensive (they look like neons, but more red on the belly)
  13. I want one! Dinner sounds so cute. I'd like one to live with my native eel, but I'd be worried they'd kill each other.
  14. I was just wondering if it's normal for red ear sliders to not eat much over winter? Mum's one has done this the past two winters & she gets worried about him. I think the heater is the original one when the turtle was in a 2ft tank (yes, our "favourite" chain pet store said 2 sliders would be fine in a 2 ft and she'd never have to upgrade), so maybe the heater isn't enough in the 4ft tank. I suggested getting another heater. And how long are heat lamps meant to last? Mum went through 3 in about 5 years, before she gave up buying them. Maybe this adds to turtles fasting, not being warm when he's not in water. Thanks in advance for help! ps, whats the best food for adult sliders? She keeps buying frozen turtle tucker & insects I think, but I've heard vegies are a fave for adults?
  15. OMG Janelle same thing happened to my baby! For the same reason I think. He's in an unheated tank & it was freezing to touch. (eel is cool with it though). He was upside down, i moved him to a tropical tank but he still died. So sad, he was so cute
  16. Yeah, nice seeing everyone again + meeting new people. No, I haven't got a pot to plant it in yet Caryl. I ended up winning a laptop bag from the MYOB stall, with the fishing rods. Everyone else was winning caps, haha. Free stuff is always good, thanks for telling me about the expo.
  17. It's about 4ish cm. From Organisms. Most of the others in it's tanks looked female, with another 2-3 that were male-ish looking. We were having a conversation about male fighters, so I'm sure John would have said something if he thought/knew it was female. Then again, maybe he expected us to have enough knowledge to tell. & yes, will seeya tonight. I'm baking hokey pokey biscuits!
  18. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the gender of my fighting fish. At the shop, we thought it was a male, it was very colourful & bright. When we got home, it had paled from the stress of transportation and had very obvious brown, horizontal lines, and we were convinced it was female! It's too young to tell by fin size, but it does flare quite a bit (mainly out of anticipation of being fed) Some days it is really bright and nicely coloured (male) and some it is pale with the stripes (female). Today I noticed it'd built a bubble nest!! Is it only males who do this? Sorry I can't put up any pictures, I don't get a camera until next week.
  19. I'd say get a few more chain loaches. I have four who rid my tank of snails. They are real gluttons. You'd be better off having a large group of 1 species than having 2 chains, 2 clowns or whatever.
  20. They are easy, can live in community tank. They need to have a piece of wood to chew on. They like tight caves and crevices. You can just feed them bits of vegies, like courgette or peas or can buy them algae tabs. They'll eat algae in your tank. They're mainly nocturnal and tend to be shy.
  21. Try ringing around aquariums with native displays for their advice, eg Southern Encounter in Chch has a range of native fish.
  22. I have a timer for my lights. I can sleep in and the plants will still get enough light. They're only about $10 at the warehouse.
  23. Lol, I was gonna post something like this, but couldn't be bothered. Thanks Coelley 8)
