Breeding Chocolate Fish
Cocoa pisces (deliscioso)
I recently managed to acquire a trio of Chocolate fish to try breeding with,
A melanistic male, a normal female and an albino female.

 
Breeding Tank parameters.
Minimum size 100 litres
Temperature under 18 centigrade otherwise they get soft and lethargic.
PH neutral to soft.
I used chocolate sprinkles as substrate and fed them Cadbury Flake food to condition them for breeding.
These fish usually spawn in caves laying a large egg mass which the male guards for7 days before they hatch.

Once the fry hatch I remove the parents just in case they are tempted to eat them.

I feed the fry fine particles of food, this is easily achieved by grating a chocolate bar on a kitchen grater.

Finally got my tanks up and running this weekend. Breeding pair moved to the top and hopefully try raising some fry in the bottom sometime in the near future. Angels have been laying eggs every 8 days so hopefully the moved didn't disturb them too much.

yes these are mop spawners but dont lay many eggs.
Im hoping to get a few fry later this week and some at the end of next week.
The eggs I took last week (only a few eggs) should hatch this week

They show a little more colour than this photo. I picked them up from Hollywood Fish Farm on Saturday morning and placed them in the tank. Fed them and didnt get to see them or feed them until Monday 10am. Took a couple of eggs by 12 noon. From years ago they were hard to get numbers of eggs and had a poor hatch rate so time will tell.

I run a Dupla Marin 190 RO unit from Living Reef and added a DI from Aquarays.  Does 190 litres in a 24hr period.

After taking eggs last Tuesday (22nd August) the first fry hatched this morning with another couple well on the way. I only kept about 15 or 20 eggs this way then collected another 20 to 30 on the Thursday and Friday placing them on peat. I will hatch them in another couple ofweeks. This week Ive been picking eggs daily and placing on peat so will give them 2 to 2.5 weeks before hatching. So much easier hatching from peat as you get the fry all the same size.

Still got 8 mollies, they are living with a L066 pleco.

I moved all the marines i have had for about 2 1/2 yrs into that tank just recently, all of these have come in as small or larval fish.Bearded Cod

Red Cod 4 Bearded Cd 1 Yellow eyed Mullet 2 Kahawai 1 Sweep 2 Dwarf Scorpionfish 2 Warehou, lost 2 to the School Shark, why he had to go lol Carpet Sharks 1 male 2 female

Welcome.  The market in NZ is already pretty well supplied with a number of new importers and businesses coming on board shortly and also the new MPI regulations.  It is a niche market and in the past those who wanted particular fish bought in were reluctant to pay the price once they were here.  Margins are tight.
 

That was also my thought.  The streak in the tail (if it looks like a blood streak) could indicate bacterial septicemia which can also link back to bad quality water.  If it is indeed that then furan is one of the very few options available in NZ.

It is excellent indeed for us and the future of killies that you have regained the interest.  Looking forward to seeing what you can do this time around.

I would like to remind members that it is polite to respond to someone when they have gone to the trouble to post/courier items to you. A simple "Thank you, the goods arrived safely" is enough. I am sick of posting items only to never hear from the recipient, even when I have sent a PM asking if the goods had arrived. Although I assume they did so, or they would have complained, a little courtesy would not go amiss!
