  1. What do you mean 'via post' - courier or mail like letters! No problems with couriers.
  2. Thats it!!! Thanks very much indeed from me and my fish fry
  3. Can anyone give me the name and contact details of the person who sells the Artemia? Brine Shrimp eggs in Auckland. He's on the North Shore. I'm desperate to get some more - have completely run out, my fault totally, and have lost his contact details. Unfortunately he hasn't any listings on TM at the moment either. Thanks everyone
  4. I agree - Christchurch water is great, as pure as. Was brought up there. Used to show horses and its a well known fact among people taking horses to the Christchurch A&P show from out of the area usually truck in their own water as animals that aren't used to the water at the show grounds find it too cold (and pure).
  5. I get that often on my tanks if there is not much surface movement, some say its caused by the oil in human skin (if you have your hands in the tank), but I tend to think it come off the flakes/pellets fed and for some reason doesn't go up through the filter system. I find that if I put an airline it or move the filter so that there is surface movement it disappears.
  6. Go to the diseases section of this forum and there have been a couple of posts on this in the last couple of weeks. Brishe has been having trouble as well and theres been quite a bit of feedback on it. I don't know anything about this one fortunately.
  7. I've gone the other way with more substrate than gravel but you do have to be careful filling the tank. It really depends on what sort of plants you want as some have longer roots than others.
  8. Hi, with regards to rock salt I use it at every water change at 1 gram per litre of water that I have removed and am replacing. This is because salt doesn't evaporate when the water does so you have to be careful that you are only putting salt in to allow for the amount in the water that you have actually removed. Doesn't hurt my fish but I don't know about the type you have. Hope this makes sense.
  9. I lost a couple or several before someone posted on this what happens. Apparently they go flying up the inside of the tank sucking away furiously and straight out the top.
  10. Hi, regarding age, I have just spawned a just 5mth old female with a 14 month old male, got eggs - not a lot - very short spawn time, haven't hatched yet and can't see them. Supposedly can breed from 4 mths but I reckon they're too small still. Will let you know if any success in the next couple of days and it might give you something to go by.
  11. Well, she doesn't look fat enough for dropsy at the moment, keep an eye on her for the pine cone effect as when fluid builds up inside the pressure will force the scales out. The only fish I have had do this is older females and they do have the same look as yours but after a few days to a week they move on to the great tank in the sky. You never know, she may recover, may just be stress from the move. Sorry I can't be more help to you. Keep us posted as to her progress or you could try asking in the anabantoids section on this forum or under diseases. There are other fighter breeders around on this forum, you could try a pm to Billaney, PeneJane, Aaron Betta or Shiloh, they may be able to help you.
  12. can you get a pic of her looking down from the top of the tank. She doesn't look happy, she shouldn't have her fins and tail pulled in like they are. The other thing is - how old is she, I don't know over in Aussie but here some of the shops sell fighters that are well over 12 months old and they don't adjust well to shifting.
  13. I also use Daltons aquatic mix and Daltons propergating? sand in my tanks and the plants are doing really well. The only tank I had a mess in was one where I wasn't careful enough filling - usually pour onto a saucer or into an icecream container and let it flow over into the tank - and didn't this once. Took a good 24 hours with a large sponge filter to clean it up but no problems now. I also have one tank with no substrate and just use flourish once a week - 10 days and the plants going well in this as well. I think its up to what you want to grow and what you want to use. Make sure you wash the sand and any gravel well.
  14. Just wondering - look at her closely, can you see her scales starting to stick out or is she getting fatter (swelling). If you could post a photo would be good but if she looks like my description above remove her and isolate her and let us know. She may have dropsy and have already had it when you purchased her but it may not have been showing.
  15. Is it possible that there was some moisture in the hood or that some water ran down the cord (not knowing your setup this may be impossible). If its stopped its not going to be a leak in your tank.

    Fluval 103

I think mine is very very old - came with a whole lot of bits and pieces I got off TM (hang on filters, hoses, vacuums + this for $15) about 13months ago. We have sealed the hole up - used gasket glue and no probs at the moment, I am working on getting a new filter as well in case. Thanks to those who have assisted me.
  17. Brilliant pics and congrats on all the fry.
  18. Great tip. Thanks Alan (and its not even my topic question!)
  19. I suspect you are right Pet Planet about the price. The only problem is getting out from Auckland to you to get one> I got a cf1200 a couple of weeks ago and it took me about 9 weeks of time management to drive out. I can't get anything bigger than an icecream container mailed or couriered because of where I live and the couriers don't take enough care as to where they leave things.

    Fluval 103

No, its not where you put the top of the filter onto the cannister but on the motor casing itself. To see where its leaking you have to unscrew the two screws and remove the small outer cover off the top of the motorpart.
  21. My fighters also eat the pleco tabs - last night I dropped one in, turned my back for a few minutes and it was gone! It wasn't the plecos.
  22. Hi, I breed fighters up here in Auckland - they are a bit young to be hanging at the top of the tank as their labrynths won't have developed fully yet. If you can you are best to put in an air line or something that will stir up the top of the water and encourage them to stay down for another week or so. You're doing well if you have quite a few through to two weeks and most losses will occur over the next 10-14 days as they start to surface to breath air. You will need to keep the air above the tank as warm as possible. Hope this helps. Good luck
  23. Looking at purchasing one of these or similar that does 500-600lph. How do you find them or any suggestions as to another brand. Thanks

    Fluval 103

Is anyone running one of the old Fluval 103 external filters? Mine appears to have a leak - think I may have it sorted but have a question and need someone to have a look at theirs for me. Thanks
  25. Don't think you would want my lot - the're pretty rude about my fish, and would make pretty smart comments - not that young, just young teens but can't leave them in the house for that long and know they'll keep out of trouble!
