  1. Does anyone know about the double tail gene that some fighters carry but don't actually have versus those that show the double tail. I have some very nice young 1/2 Cambos at the moment - their father was a single tail with the double tail gene and wondered if I crossed them with a full cambo showing the d/t what are my chances of getting d/ts. Also have a very very light blue cambo male and a nearly translucent male as well. Have some young females with nearly translucent fins as well, do you think if I paired these this would continue? Their bodies are a very very pale pink.
  2. Maybe thats where some of mine have gone to. I couldn't work out how they had disappeared (no carcass floating)!
  3. Both common salt and rock salt are at the supermarket. I use rock salt in my tropical tanks all the time to keep down disease (small amount of it though) and epsom salt or tonic salt for individual disease depending on whats wrong.

    CF1200

The uv steriliser is not attached to the cf1200 - is a seperate unit that filters about 400litres per hour. The only thing I can think of where air may be getting in is at the tap on the intake - when I turn it off it drips - obviously the same fault that a few of you have had on c1200 filters of late but when it is on there are no drips. Unless the fact that I only have about 6cm of water above the top of the intake pipe that is in the tank has something to do with it. I mean its not a major at the moment - the tank and filter are not in the house but I would like it running silently like the other externals I have.

    CF1200

Hi, I have a 4ft tank and keep about 40 young male fighters in it in bottles with holes through them to allow through circulation of water and the waste matter to be flushed out. The sterilizer has stopped all algae in the tank.

    CF1200

The only thing the filter intake is near is the intake to the uv sterilizer I run in this tank. There are no airbubbles in the intake hose, the only bubbles you can see are where the water coming in and being pushed down to the bottom is, in other words you can see the flow into the bottom part of the cannister, then the bubbles form, burp their way up to the top between the side of the cannister and the media containers and exit via the outlet pipe. The only thing I can think of is that the surface the filter is sitting on may not be completely even.

the air appears to be coming in with the water - you can see airbubbles and water coming into the bottom of the filter and then they rise to the top and out the outlet.

    CF1200

Finally have my new cf1200 filter - set it up last night. Took forever to prime but all things come to those who wait. A question for the knowing - every minute or so a stream of air bubbles rise from the bottom and go out through the outlet into the tank. What would be causing all the air to get in - you can see the air bubbles at the bottom of the filter as the water comes through from the intake. Eventually the air pocket gets through to the top and is released through the outlet.
  9. Its quite hard to see if they are eating cucumber, courgette. The most of the time I can't really tell unless I see them on it. You will need to replace the cucumber every day otherwise it will either get mould over it or disintergrate into the tank and into your filter intake.
  10. Its made of sediment caused by erosion and layers are formed which quite often have shells in them. Breaks down very easily.
  11. okay, asked my husband, a science teacher. Apparently if the stones are from sedimentary rock and you pour vinegar on them they will fizz. He thinks they will probably break down in water. (Didn't tell me that though!!)
  12. What do you mean by test if the gravel is suitable? I buy mine from the garden centre but you have to wash, wash & wash again until it is clean.
  13. Golden apple snails will definately eat your plants. Avoid them in planted aquariums at all costs.
  14. I'd reckon over 500 - looks huge!
  15. Bettas are very peaceful and beautiful fish - as long as the others leave them alone! Angels nip at their fins, hence them retaliating as do barbs and often guppies as well. In my experience with them - over 25 years (shows my great age!!!!), as long as the males have room to swim as they like to swoop along the length of the tank and plants to hide in if they are being annoyed they are great community fish.
  16. I haven't had gourami with my betta but if they are aggressive it could be because they belong to the same family 'anabantoids' and a male from each species may see each other as competition. Not sure but someone else is sure to know.
  17. I feed pleco chips and courgette - I stick a couple of toothpicks into it and wedge them into the stones and substrate. Seems to work okay. Mine also eat the fighter pellets and flakes I feed as well.
  18. With most fish there is always one that is the biggest by quite a bit in each spawn. By seperating the bigger ones out as they grow it gives the smaller ones a chance to get to the food otherwise the bigger fish take it.
  19. A betta will be fine with the fish in your tank. I have some baby catfish in my fighter tanks at the moment and the fighters were interested in them at the start but because there are hiding places anyway soon got over it when the catfish took off.
  20. Actually I think they are jolly good photos. Congrats and keep them growing!
  21. My experience is that if a fish dies and you're not quick enough removing the body theres not much left if anything.

    Lighting

    Thanks - 1 X T8 or more?
  23. My thoughts, and I haven't had guppies for a while, is that they have been cannabilised. Don't know about the one in the net though unless they jumped out!

    Lighting

I was in at the lfs today and when I asked about lighting was told T8 is stronger than T5 so purchased the T8. Now I've read that T5 is better. Which is it please? and what would you all use on a standard 60cm X 30cm tank. Cheers
  25. Hi Carla, yes it was - sorry about that ) didn't know that the blue text was for clicking on- duh!!!. Me thinks I'll forget about it for now - not worth the possible trouble.
