  1. I use the mesh bags that come with the ceramic noodles or stuff filter wool up the inside of the intake. just means you need to siphon out the gunk more often. the only other option is to move the fry to another tank and run a sponge filter.
  2. Tough Tanks Henderson has it $106 about
  3. I suspect thats not the ony country that does it.

    Feeding ideas

if you can feed them round the clock they will certainly grow faster.
  6. very very nice - you should do a swap with purplecatfish - I've seen his and they are also lovely. Looks like theres going to be some beautiful guppies around soon.
  7. Hi nice to see you on this site. (You asked me a question this morning) Shop purchased fighters don't seem to be doing very well as of late. They are generally imports which come into the country, sit at the quarantine store for about 6 weeks (goodness knows what happens there), are sent to the shops and a few days later onsold to joe public. They don't seem to have a lot of immunity left by this time and I have heard a lot of people saying that they have died within days or a couple of weeks. Its probably better to buy from local breeders if you can. The fish will be younger and in the majority of cases properly fed and looked after. You are most likely doing nothing wrong. If you are wondering why your female is surviving - the bulk of these in the pet shops are NZ bred (usually locally).
  8. for those of you who were wondering - I asked a question on the veiltail and they have had this fish for about 8 weeks so they probably are about 5 months old.
  9. I don't think so - the breeder up here in Auckand has the parents raise them in the tank with the other rams - just screens off the area where the eggs are and the parents do the work.
  10. As far as I know the parents can raise the fry. However its very very hard to get them to survive.
  11. still got my first tank - its 26 years old and still going strong - just the standard 2ft. Has survived 8 shifts all around NZ as well.
  12. and actually the veiltail male has a very well developed tail and fins for that age as well.
  13. Not rare as far as breeds go but showing nice colours as long as a flash hasn't been used as the colours don't always photograph true. However at 10 weeks they are very young to be selling. The ct has very long rays for being only that age.
  14. pass - no idea
  15. got home tonight and had to dismantle my filter - 6 happy within the hose and another 6 in the bottom of the external and 1 had made it right up to the filter wool now there mesh around it.

yep, and females won't always colour up completely until they have bred although they do improve when a males around.
  17. no I have them in different tanks, each tank has either golden albino or normal brown bns in them but none have mixed colours. hasn't stopped some of the brown babies turning out golden though.

Too hard to tell, depends on how many in the spawn, what you are feeding, what sized tank they are in, what sort of conditions with regards to water. All grow at different rates as I said in my own post last night, some hardly ever grow. You want the biggest and best to keep as your own breeders.

my yellows are coming up 6 weeks and I have been able to see yellow in the tails of the bigger ones 1-1.5cm for about 10 days. if yours are darker you should be able to see them colouring very soon.
  20. actually i have a question too - i have an external filter running in the tanks, its at the other end of the tank 120cm away from the wood and bn. whats the chances that they will end up in the filter - do i need to put mesh over it.
  21. lol - I must be a bit slow, got home from work tonight and the baby bns i had found last night were out and about round the tank so I lifted up the wood... and found another lot about 1/2 the size. Then I found a batch of golden albinos as well. As my sons gf said ' well at least your tanks will be clean'
  22. yep and you already know i'm after yours
