  1. Looking at the shape of his bottom fin I would say veiltail.
  2. The smaller discus would be better left in the smaller tank with up to 100% water changes daily until they grow. They will be more healthy, grow faster and get more food this way. I have 5 bigger 10cm plus discus in a 450 litre planted tank with neons, cardinals, rummynoses, corys, bn and hatchets and they still manage to pick on the smaller one of the 5 and fight daily.
  3. Glad they made it, just be patient, mines been running since the beginning of the year and is still a work in progress.
  4. No real idea but could it be a heater burn?
  5. My daughter didn't have a general but what Stella refers to as 'concious sedation'. She is 17 but tiny - 46kg and it took about 9 hours to wear off. I took her home about an hour after she had it done, she doesn't remember much and definitely doesn't remember walking to the car. However she says the soreness from having the teeth out was way less than when they were in. It was only the two bottom ones that were stitched as they were not at all through the gum, the two top came out easily. Be brave, get them done, the pain won't go away if they do in fact need to come out. All Stellas recommendations about mouth wash etc were what my daughter was also given to do.
  6. My daughter had her 4 teeth removed in the last school holidays. Went private (no option given) and it cost us $1800. Our Southern Cross policy has a clause in it that does not pay for extraction of teeth. Dentists used to do it, now they take the easier option and we have to pay for a surgeon instead.
  7. Yep that blue is the one most commonly found in imported males in the fish shops.

    Discus tankmates

discus aren't the fastest of swimmers, they seem to like a peaceful sort of tank. if you have them in with faster fish they will miss out on food. A bigger group of discus is better as they do tend to pick on each other and can get pretty agro at times. I have 5 (was originally 6) in with sterbai, cardinals, neons, rummynose, bristlenose and hatchets and wouldn't have a smaller number.

    Fish dying????

A heater in a tank will only give something a shock if it is touching something outside the tank at the same time, therefore a fish touching it alone or even touching a heater and glass would not get a shock as glass is an insulator. So if you had been suspended in air you wouldn't have had a shock either
  10. I sterilise me filters and noodles with bleach as well, then a good rinse and put in the sun to dry. Plants I don't think could be sufficently sterilised to be certain unless they are plastic.
  11. My husband refuses to have those robocans in the house and prefers us to use a fly swat over spraying. However, having been on the end of a swarm of mozzies tonight I will be spraying before he comes home from work. I do not however spray in the air in the room with my tank but I will spray directly on a fly!
  12. Your pH will probably drop more as the tank matures but imo (and in many others) as long as the pH remains consistent the fish will be okay. Its better to have a stable pH than one which fluctuates and this is likely to happen if you fiddle too much with it. The correct pH is more important if you are trying to breed fish. What sort of fish (or have I missed it?).
  13. I use an aquis (aqua one) 2200 on my 5 ft -approx 450 litres - tank and it works great.
  14. I do think they will colour up more - my yellows looked like this when they were younger. The males coloured up well and the females bodies yellowed a bit more.
  15. Heres Nanimaldoca's pictures of her fighters.
  16. Yes it does sound like that - I have never had issues with it affecting anything in my tank. and aaron11 - some of us work and can't answer during the daytime.
  17. Great packing Ryan! I use NZ couriers and out of the 50+ times I've sent fish this year have only had a couple of problems with late delivery. However I do know that they can not tell you where a track and trace package is, its really only a guess as I was told that a package sent to Motueka had been returned to Nelson when in fact the fish were already in the tank! The second time it happened the package destined for out of Blenheim was left at the Auckland depot by mistake. When contacted by the purchaser they put it on another flight, and then had a taxi take it over 40km into the countryside to the house. Both packages still arrived within 24 hours. In saying that people sending fish do it with the purchaser knowing that they are taking the risk.
  18.   The water movements a bit of a prob too really Ron.
  19. Sounds good. Will be interesting to see what colour the bodies come out as. I'm not certain if I have it right but yellow comes from red gone wrong? Not that I care as I like the yellows. I crossed a yellow ct female with my platinum red crowntail and am dying to see what colour the young turn out. They are about the same age as yours. At this stage it looks like most will be red & yellow. Maybe we'll be able to do a swop. I too would love to see pics of some of yours.
  20. yes, I have lots of holes and also have about 4500 litres an hour of water movement - 2 external filters, 2 power heads and an internal uv steriliser moving water in the tank, the tank itself has about 140 litres of water in it and at the most 50 bottles.
  21. I haven't been able to keep them alive either
  22. Don't go there on this forum - as in try to get us to comment about the lfs. It only causes trouble.
  23. anyone - come on own up if you have tried even if it didn't work out.
