    glosso.

hey what does this mean? it was in an auction for some glosso on trademe. Will it be good for my 38L planted tank?
  2. 300 ltrs per hour should be fine on your 60x30x30. I have an aquaone hang on the back 300lph filter in my axolotl tank and its fine-and they are pretty messy!

    Planted Nano

    nice looking tank
  4. try a chemists- I believe they have online websites and the like. By chemists I mean chemistry, the science not the drugstore people
  5. hey guys I bought an elite mini submersible power filter the other day for my 38 litre tank and just want to reccomend this filter to everyone. (Its just like a small version of my fluval 4 plus!) It only cost me about $20 and is waaaay better than your standard bubble filter, it also pumps 56L an hour which is quite a bit for a tiny filter (it fits in the palm of your hand). It comes with an air tube which sits out of the water and aids in tank airation. So yeah, anyone else have one of these filters? they are much reccomended by me.

    tadpoles

There is also a disease which is often carried by non-native frogs called cyclid fungus (sp.) if this disease gets passed one of our rare native frog populations it could wreak havoc! And yes all Native frogs are fully protected- you are not allowed to touch them- with the obvious exception of zoos (incl. Auckland Zoo)
  7. I am really crap at maths. If I have a 100 L tank I need 150 watts heat aye :-?

    tadpoles

    no I wouldnt reccomend it
  9. I bought it!!!!!!!!!!!! I got it for $51 dollars so hopefully it is worth Lots   they say I am able to pick it up in a month when my tank is cycled!
  10. there are several species of native bully. The ones most often seen in fish tanks are redfin bully(Gobiomorphus huttoni) and common bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus). Other natives which are good to keep in aquariums are kokupu, freshwater crayfish, Inaga and common bully. for a list of species which are protected check out: http://www.nzfreshwater.org/index_aquaria.html

    tadpoles

there are three types of non-native frogs in New Zealand; these are. Litoria raniformis (usually known as Green frogs) Litoria Aurea (Usually known as green and golden bell frogs) Litoria ewingii ( Whistling tree frogs or brown tree frogs) It is usually very hard to tell these apart as tadpoles, however The whistling tree frogs develop legs while they are smaller. If your mum got them from a pet shop and they did not say they were tree frogs then they are most likeley to be Litoria Aurea.
  12. I think what Ira is saying is that she wants lights shining from one side of the tank (from an above water position) to the other end of the tank... yes you can buy lighting like this at all good fish stores. you could also look at underwater pond lighing- I haven't seen anyone with one of these soorts of things in their tanks but I can't see why it wouldn't work
  13. I don't have any at the moment but i will hopefully be getting a pig-nosed puffer  which I am in the process of setting up a tank for. And I am waiting on another tank to be delivered for some green spotted pufferfish. An overflow is the part of your main tank where the water flows over a bar which is just below the water level and this water then goes down into the sump (a little hard to explain in words) If you don't know what you are doing and want a sump I would reccomend buying one pre setup as There is quite a bit of siliconing and glass cutting involved and if you do't know what you are doing it can result in disasters.
  14. well us students (and other poor people!!!) can always branch out from the fish side of things to amphibians rather than marine reef tanks. I have two axolotls as well as two tanks of frogs- one full of whistling tree frogs and the other full of green frogs. I think that amphibians are amazing and they don't cost anywhere near as much as a reef tank. (well I have marine tanks at work so I cant really complain about not having enough money because I get to look aster that one) well thats my 2cents worth anyway... I want to get some freshwater crays next- once I have set up my two puffer tanks.
  15. what would you use to power it? you could use a really strong air pump but I think it would be quite cool if you used a powerhead-that would work I think- ask arould. I have always wanted to make an in-tank sump one day. I was thinking about making it by having a false back the whole way across the back of the tank made out of black or dark blue plastic- slightly lower than the water level so the water flows over it and through the filter material which is in a nittle container you can lift out. then you would need a hole in the bottom of the false back and you could have a power filter in there pumping the clean water from the little sump back into the main tank. Ingenious but most likely flawed
  16. Next you will be getting Sharks and stingreays
  17. I like the look of these two tanks: http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2 ... ol=0&id=40 http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2 ... ol=0&id=14
  18. hey I am looking at setting up a 38 L planted tank with a few neons and was just wondering which plants people suggest??? So far I have a 55watt heater and one of those jebo clip on lights. what can I do about filtration in a tank this size? is it best to not worry about filtration and just do large water changes? I have got a bit of java fern and java moss wich I was hoping to use... what do you guys think about using it in a tank this size? Thanks for your help

    driftwood

I would put it in boiling water and leave it in there till that water is cold then I would wrinse it off then weigh it down with rocks in an empty container. I would then leave it in there for a week or two maybe changing the water when you can see the tanins have leaked out( if it looks like tea)... Why do you want driftwood though-I thought you were making a malawi tank in which case you wouldn't want driftwood as it would lower the pH.

    driftwood

hey jasmine- it should be safe if you steralise it in bouling water and then soak it... it is better to use driftwood from a river rather than the beach as wood from the beach will leech salt out into your aquarium if you do not soak it enough...
