  1. I have heard that just by puting in a heater that was used in a turtle tank into a fish tank you can kill the fish I also know someone that had about 2 hundred guppies die from something that was use for there turtles got mixed with the fishies. Although at animates melling in lower hutt they have a breeding pair of convicts in with there large turtles as well as about 10 baby convicts and a pleco. And they all look healthy :-? So really I'm not much help sorry. My turtles tank has quite a low PH so that may effect the fishies also.

    Rocks...

I found some awesome ones at the beach last weekend 8) - I haven't put them in yet but apparently all you have to do is boil them and they should be fine. Beach might not be the easiest idea though :-?

And if I see any signs of stress I will remove them and do it fishless. thanks for everyones help!! I will post a pic of the tank once theres a few fishes in there

    New Tank

ok i'm glad I didn't put it in then why do they have these then? and what should I use it for? The tanks heater was smashed into a thousand little pieces when it arrived today so I will have to go and buy a new one now that was a big waste of money  but at least I hadn't added anything to the tank thinking I was getting it going faster since i didn't know when the heater was going to arrive. Is it recommended that I add one or two small fishies to get it going?

    New Tank

Cool thanks, The water has all cleared up now so I don't think I will have any problems with cloudy water . Will do today with the driftwood thanks for the advice, so hopefully I can add before the fishies are ready to go in. I will definately let it run its cycle then, as is seems like a stupid idea not too  I definately don't want stressed or dead fishies I do have this ammonia and nitrite remover (it is a little blue tea bag look alike) I got in this pack of free stuff for spending over a certain amount at animates on saturday Did anyone else get one? if so are these ammonia and nitrite removers recommended? The pack also had in it- fish net, fish food, algae scuber, ammonia and nitrite remover, a little bottle of cycle and aqua plus, and a couple other things. it was a starter pack for a fish tank (but I didn't buy a fish tank? :-? )

    New Tank

Hey also swapping over the fishies from the smaller tank to the larger tank advice would be GREAT The tank is second hand (so used before) but I did disinfect it for 24 hours, and now the tank has been set up with plants driftwood and stones for 2days, the filter is the jebo 819, is brand new and has only been set up going for one day (there was a problem with the one I intended to get so I returned it) Anyway when and how many fish do you recommend I add at a time? And would it effect the fish at all if the water is a tiny bit cloudy from the stones (they were rinsed but my helper got tired haha) I don't want to over stock it and don't want any dead fishies because i'm too hasty :-? And I was really hoping I wouldn't have to wait too long as me and the fishies are excited about there new home

    New Tank

That does sound like a good idea as I do actually live in island bay so would be very convenient Blue and Kim helped me out with some white stones he had in his bullet so worked out really well (and driftwood and plants) THANKS  But I will keep that in mind next time as I did go out to makara beach after the yuky weather and picked up some nice bits of driftwood and some nice big stones, I don't know how to make them fish tank friendly though? so any help there would be great the driftwood would be to big to boil :-? How did you sterilize it? I think its illegal from any beach but yea its not like your were filling a sandpit or anything

    New Tank

I paid $100 for the filter and its in real good condition as I saw it before I brought it 8) and I brought a brandnew 300w jebo heater for $22, I agree with the heaters I didn't want some old crusty one

    New Tank

Great thanks for all that, I have 2 red melon, 2 golden marlboro, 2 red turks, 1 white pearl?, and I think there might be a couple more called red marlboro :-? , I'm not totally sure as I brought all of them except the red melon discus as a group of four but there gave me some free ones, and when I picked them up they were ready to go in a poly box as I picked them up in auckland, so I didn't get to double check. I'm picking up the filter tonight aswell and I can't remember what the exact name is but I definately know its a jebo and 819 is ringing bells but I can't be sure , yea the tanks looks great, I have 3 of the other aqua one tanks with the in built filters and yea I wouldn't rate them compared to the external canister filters

    New Tank

what colour do you recommend? I have dark grey ones in two of my other tanks but thought I would never be able to see my my black ghost knife if I used dark ones in his tank :-? , I do have alot of other rocks and plants and drift wood covering most of the white stones in the tank they are currently in so you can't really see alot of the stones anyway if that makes any difference?

    New Tank

Wow how exciting I just brought a new 300ltr aqua one tank(I think they are called bullet tanks) I think its 4ft So exciting!!! Anyway I brought it for my discus and my ghost knife and a few others so they would have plenty of room to grow in it (well for a while anyway) I have got the filter and heater and a few smaller plants but if anyone has got cheap gravel (I like white gravel but I'm on a tight budget so I can't be too fussy) I could buy off you it would be great and also any large pieces of drift wood would be great aswell and anything else that I need that I haven't thought about???? :-? Thanks in advance
  16. Ok thanks for that will get some on saturday, fingers crossed no more deaths!!!
  17. I thought it looked normal but it was always the shy one in the tank so I'm not totally sure :-? I know that about 2-3weeks ago I got 3 neons from a pet shop when I got them home I noticed one wasn't as bright as the rest on closer inspection he was covered by white spot , I treated the tank straight away and the neon disappeared never to be seen again? at this stage I didn't know that the white spot treatment didn't kill the cysts and I didn't do that good of clean through the gravel so I think that it has just cycled again and since doing a move around of fish between tanks it has spread to 2 of my 3 tanks  (I must add I called the fish shop I got the neon from and they told me there fish don't have white spot!!) All the other fish look happy and are eating well! I did a water change in both tanks last night including cleaning through the gravel and then retreated the water at quarter strength the rest of the fish look happy and the spots are slowly disappearing. Do I get this at my LFS?
  18. I have now noticed that in my other tank that my female krib has passed away :-? I had white spot treatment in there too as I use the same fish net in both my tanks? Have i got some other type of disease in there aswel or are these just the devistating effects of white spot?
  19. My clown loach was dead by the time I got home And when I was checking all the other fish i noticed one of my discus is looking very skinny and unwell, I have seperated him now. (this discus was the one that I spotted the white spot first on) Please any other help would be great Should I be adding salts or picking up any other medication for them?
  20. Clown loach is still not looking very good, my partner just reported that he was at the top of the tank vertically swimming well bobbing? I haven't seen it yet and I don't know how long it was doing it??
  21. Ok well they are on there 3rd day of the meds and as directed by the treatment I gave them more this morning half as strong as the first so hopefully they will all fall off soon. When do you recommend I do my first water change? Clown loach was out last night not looking 100% but looking ok, didn't eat much from what i could see when I fed them, he didn't really look very interested at feeding time??? :-?
  22. Ok will do, it just seems that I am not doing enough to help my fishes so I guess that all I can do now is sit and wait for them to fall off
  23. Ok Thanks for the quick replys, no carbon in the filter at the moment as I thought that would be the case, but do have ceramic noodles in there still? I put in a air pump in there last night with a large air stone to encrease the oxyen. Thanks for the comment about the clowns as that at least that relaxes me a wee bit till I get home and get to check it out myself? I really really want them to all be ok
  24. trust me I watched them for more than a hour afterwards I was glued to the tank and then last night noticed the tank wasn't blue anymore from the white spot treatment should I add more? :-? , they are due tomorrow for more anyway and the spots are still there. The temp is at 30 is this high enough to kill the spawning ones? I don't know if I am being paranoid but one of the clown loaches was looking off colour last night and wasn't shooting around like normal?? And now I just rang home (i'm at work) And my partner can't see the other clown loach even when putting a block of blood worms in there??? All other fish are going crazy over the blood worms. Is there anything else I can do to help them I don't want any to die and I don't care how much the med's cost as long as they fix my darlings Please please help
  25. Hey I have a ghost knife, BN's, clown loaches, discus and kuhli loaches in a tank with what looks like could be the very early stages of white spot which I want to treat straight away, am i right in thinking that I should only use half the recommended does in a tank containing these fish? if not what should I do? I have used white spot treatment so far at half strength as I wanted to treat them quickly but didn't want to hurt the ghost knife
