  1. Could use a plastic fish bin or similar to make an island in the middle.
  2. I do.....woof woof   Looks good from what i skimmed over last night, thanks Jennferh. Bit like children I dont see the any benefit from using force/dominance. More emphasis on positive praise goes a very long way to gaining control and respect.
  3. check this out http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7067613.stm edit...seems to be an old article, so maybe not as promising as first thought
  4. awesome i was reading an article earlier tonight that said these were thought to be extinct....i never knew they existed before tonight and now this. to much
  5. Yea glass is sweet. Timber holds heat better but you dont really need/want that. As you ultimately need the cool end as cold as possible One of my timber setups only has one vent and it gets too hot (more vents on the "to do" list), other setup i have with 3 good sized vents is all good
  6. True i didnt realise they were so far up north. Was thinking maybe the southerns simply eat the aurea but dont survive up north in the heat therefore aurea survive. Still possible they dominate more so at lower temps. But looks like the aurea just dont like the cold.
  7. glass tanks are fine especially for blue tongues as they dont need a lot of heat. Prob easier on the wallet to. If you can make something for outside over summer as sneaky mentioned even better
  8. yes i agree, i wont be trying it again with my albinos anytime soon. They seem pretty hardy to me but maybe ive just been lucky.
  9. my albino's have been around 15C maybe even under 10C in the past. I didnt know much better  thats only night time temp though.
  10. is that scientific or just observation? Are there southern bells up north?
  11. crazy maybe he sent the frog to Germany at the same time :-? What did he hope to achieve by getting a dna test done do you know? Aurea seem to handle cooler temps but im not sure how cold just yet.
  12. http://www.freewebs.com/crossfireenclosures/ i just used mdf on the last enclosure i built
  13. Duckweed will probably cover the pond once turtles slow down for winter to..Come spring i use it as my indicator as to when to start feeding. As soon as the duckweed starts disappearing i start feeding again. I guess it insulates the pond to.
  14. My red ears clean up the duckweed within a few days. I suppose theres a chance if your turtles are fed well/too much on other foods and conditions are good the duckweed could get out of hand. I use to have about 10 adults in my pond and they would go through half a 10litre bucket of duckweed every other day. Now I have just 3 and I dont add nearly as much, generally a large fish net full and thats seems to disappear over about 3/4days. Gold fish will likely get eatin in time. I seem to have one in my pond thats beaten the odds....so far
  15. To true I would love to see a pic, black eyes on a yellow frog would be stunning.
  16. Mr Obvious  Ok so does anyone know what happened to it?
  17. Need to be careful with treated timber. Do you have an overflow for when it rains hard? I use duckweed and azolla (large duckweed) for the greens. I grow it in baths or troughs i have for livefood. Turtles love it, and it sucks up unwanted nutrients whilst waiting to be eaten. Also gives them a bit of cover which i think they appreciate. Another forum member uses plastic mesh for the ramps to the basking area. I just use driftwood.
  18. Did anyone see this frog http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 795067.htm I cant remeber ever seing a photo, just curious as to what colour it was etc.
  19. You can get 4 foot tubes of the sylvania. Pet shops also sell the uv tubes in various sizes and often a better product.
  20. Out of everything ive dabbled in over the past few years the frogs have probably been the most fascinating. Such characters and amazing to watch. there goes one now > >>> :bounce: lol
  21. never heard of it myself, sounds good but could be easy to overdose on?
  22. I just use one of these http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 545395.htm and for heat a standard house hold spotlight ($3-10 bunnings, supermarket etc) basically same thing as these http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 897985.htm You want to provide a warm end a cool end. A heat source with fan will likely heat the whole tank so im not sure what the idea is with them.
  23. Nice pond well done. I cant make out the basking area but as long as they can get out of water to sun themselves and dry out then should be all good. The white shell'd one doesnt look perfect but not bad, will come rite in a setup like that providing it gets good sunlight. Healthy turtles dont get white shells period. EDIT maybe slightly prior to shedding, but once shed there shouldnt be any white.
