  1. so one temp day and night is ok? i have seen some keepers overseas just keep them in plastic tubs in racks and with a heat mat. seems pretty boring really.
  2. What the  sadly it doesnt surprise me though. Time the govt understands that protecting our natives is going to have a much greater benefit to our country in the long. As apposed to the commercial gain of today.
  3. Nor did I Try NZHS forum maybe? but it all takes time anyway, you need to show your competent over time and so on etc. You have age on your side
  4. Depends which program you use/have on computer. With mine i just pause the movie, go upto file and it has 'capture still frame' as one of the options..
  5. Good question. Its not the using them as food that bugs me as such, more the waste of a native fish thats in decline. Guppies are captive bred, could do the same with natives I suppose. Better off with goldfish though
  6. artificial grass even easier again?
  7. I was hoping most would be against it, would not have surprised me if a few are not  . Thing is Ive seen more than one case recently where people think its ok to use them as feeders. Ok people are catching kgs of the stuff for the commercial market so a 100 here and there fed to fish and turtles may seem irrelevant to some. But it doesnt make it right. If it was upto me I'd ban the catch of whitebait outright. That will never happen with the way our country works. The fishing of whitebait for commercial gain is crazy if you ask me. Reason I posted this, is one i wasnt sure what others would think and two, that I was hoping it would bring this issue to peoples attention. I think alot of NZers are lacking education on our natives. I didnt want to post my opinion in the beginning as thought it may just set the tone so to speak. Appreciate those who simply gave their opinion
  8. well i figure they dont stay in their hides all day (could be wrong). Id be encouraging them out if i had them, what good is a pet you never see.. according to care sheet on here need warmer temps during the day as well as a hot and cold end. So if it was me they would get a heat mat or emitter with thermostat for night, and a basking bulb for day.
  9. True I didnt even notice the sliding doors  Not sure about the basking, I dont keep Leopard gecko's tbh. I know someone on here who was in the know use to recommend heat mats, and another breeder bulbs for memory. Pretty sure you still need a hot and cool end? so either should work ok. Just because something is nocturnal doesnt mean they wont bask at times. Livingart has a good point, maybe just a towel or some cardboard etc.
  10. Heat emitter maybe enough for night time heat. May need a basking bulb during the day? Going to be a nuisance to access the bottom tank...
  11. It seems there will always be a demand for what we cant have. Im sick of keeping exotics and being looked at like your a criminal for having them. What is legal and whats not is anyones guess... Id rather keep our natives any day, and hope to get involved with research and breeding programs in the future (already am to a certain degree). But the restrictions and not being able to sell them legally makes it less appealing for me at the present time. Sounds shallow but thats the way it is. In Aus the permit system seems to work well and you can trade (sell) the natives as far as im aware. So less desire for exotics.
  12. bluey tongues are actually very fast and often underestimated, theyre amazingly fast if theyre hungry and warm 40C and you have a slug with legs on P
  13. No ones claimed to own them, and even if they did they probably wont say so. Ask silly questions, expect silly answers?
  14. Blue tongues seem to have iron stomachs.
  15. I dont like them, too crunchy and no guts to it. Sort of taste like a roasted cricket  Seriously though, should be ok for a bit of variety.
  16. Well I never said I want to feed them to anything did I. Maybe I read into it wrong and its just Navarre's way of getting a point across, i do not know. Thanks for your input, appreciate it. Was thinking earlier I should have also asked what peoples thoughts are on the fishing of whitebait in general.
  17. sometimes we even get more than we ask for, got to love the generosity
  18. If thats not an assumption I dont know what is. My request for opinions on the matter simply has nothing to do with me, other than getting a more informed opinion. I just think its an interesting topic, and would be very interested to see what others think.
  19. Chill, whats wrong with people today lol. My post was aimed at Navarre  I havent said im for or against it
  20. NZ whitebait, as live food for fish, turtles etc. Just curious as to what peoples opinions are..
