There was a thread about these guys a few weeks ago. The new discovered species.. http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... ?news=1060 Well, there are some on sale at Hollywood fish farm in Albany right now. I was looking around today and there were a few new fish which included these guys. But they are $20.80 each!!! Plus they are tiny! Wouldn't be happy if my angel fish gobbled it up!

What lucky people...I wish we could get more types of plants and fish in NZ... And if there was someone who did deliveries... These guys must be VERY rich or something!! Look at all the stuff they bought....

WOW..very cool.. That would cost you a fortune...must have won the lotto or something...

Recommend me a pointy leaved foreground plant
penguinleo replied to penguinleo's topic in Aquatic Plants
Haha Alan...those are for another position in the tank. Something like this looks nice but the leaves get too long and all over the place.. http://www.aquahobby.com/garden/e_Cyperus_helferi.php Stargrass is very nice short in clumps but I'm looking for some plants more like on the top link. Something short with long leaves like the above link. And Antwan, how many watts of light do you need at least to grow hairgrass like you have before? Did you have CO2 and all the rest of it? Thanks all for your replies. -
I have set up a new planted tank and am looking for any type of plant which posesses some pointy tip slender long leaves. Something that doesn't grow too big and is nice in the foreground. Help will be appreciated. :bounce:

I just need to know some differences between these two algae eaters. Do Ottos need wood to eat like BNs? Any aggression? I heard that Ottos sometimes cling onto other fish. What types of algae to Ottos eat? In your opinion what is better in reducing algae levels? Ottos or Flying foxes? Thanks in advance.

Cool. Very cool. Nice find...are the wood okay to use in the aquarium though? Good luck with em!

Oh and I just found something here. Someone bred Schwartz cories in these water conditions: Water depth of 20cm, pH of 7.5, GH of 11°, KH 3° at a temperature of 23.3°C in a heavily planted tank.
-
They are pretty expensive usually for cories... :-?

Schwartz Cories grow to about 6-7cm long. But they are very slow growers. Well, in my experience anyway.. You can sex Schwartz cories by looking at the body of the cory. The female is wider bodied then the male (look at them from a bird's eye look) and the female is a little longer then the male at maturity which is about 3-4cm excluding tail. According to what I have read and kept Schwartz cories are extremely difficult to breed in an aquarium. All of the Schwartz cories we see in LFS are imported from Brazil in the Rio Purus Drainage. I have seen one guy on the net who claims that he has bred them but don't know really... But my advice to you now is get some more!! One cory is honestly not enough. Good Luck with them!
-
Hi Smidey, I currently have 10 Schwartz Cories in my community tank. I really love them. Very cute They should be fine with the fish you have but really, you should have more than one cory in the tank. He/She will probably freak out and cories need to be in schools. I may be able to offer you 2 extra Schwartz cories in a few weeks time. And I have never had any bad experiences with these cories. One of my favourite cories.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I will buy a large piece of driftwood at Jansens. I will try and get the most heaviest piece that is suitable for my tank. There is a lot of driftood at Hollywood fish farm but it is so expensive!! :-? About $60 for a 50cm piece I think. Not that big. But it always sinks. The reason it is so expensive is because it the wood they sell is imported from Malaysia.
-
Prices are reasonable? How much did you pay for your piece IOU? And how large was it? And how long did it take you to sink it? How did you do it? Thanks for the reply

I am currently setting up a new planted tank. At the moment it is pretty bare. Nothing but substrate heating, fertiliser and gravel. I was looking for some great pieces of driftwood to put in my tank on the weekends and I spotted some at Jansens in Silverdale. I was in a rush that day and so I couldn't get a good look at the wood there. But it looked pretty dry, like a beige colour. I heard that some wood that people sell float and may take months to sink down because water has to be taken in. Therefore pretty useless for an aquarium. So my question is: Has anyone bought any driftwood at Jansens in Silverdale before? And does it sink and is it suitable for aquariums?

My CO2 injection system bottle has finally used up all the CO2 gas. Does anyone know a place in Auckland, preferably the North Shore which does CO2 gas refills? I need an answer asap since I am setting up a new planted tank today! PLEASE HELP ME OUT! Thank you and have a happy new year! :bounce:

A while back now, I bought some leopard fish from trademe. Eventually I didn't really enjoy them so I sold them on Trademe again. I managed to sell them but a few days later a member of DOC came over to my house and asked me if I had any leopard fish! Well, I didn't so I answered no and then he started to say things like to never release them in the wild and that he wanted to check the fish out. Was pretty scary to be honest!

Thanks for the help guys. I think I got things nearly sorted.

Thanks for the help. Any one else like to write their recommendation? Well, you still need a heater even if you have underground heating. And now, I am thinking whether I should get it or not. But they do say that it helps the gravel a bit by keeping it oxygenated and gives the plants "warm feet". Can you give me some help with the lights? And the kelvin rating? Thanks! :bounce:

I am just on the edge of purchasing a new planted tank. It will probably be around 200-300L. It will be custom made with a stand and a hood. Thinking of a Fluval 305 or a Ehiem Professional 2224 or an Ehiem 2026 Professional 2 filter. Will need a 300Watt heater. Will get some underground heating, probably Red Sea or JBL. Will use some ground fertilisers, dark gravel, black background, and a CO2 pressurized injection system with some lights. I just need some help in deciding what brands you recommend. What brand of ground fertiliser would you recommend? What Kelvin ratings would I need to use? A combination of 6500 and 8000? Need some help especially on this. Will I need some reflectors? What filter would you recommend? Not the biggest one available! Just one suitable for the size of the tank. According to my calculations I think all of this will cost around $2000-2500. This excludes the CO2 system as I already have one. All help will be appreciated

I got some of the Purigen stuff from Jansens in Silverdale 2 days ago. It is a super product. Really works. I bought the 250ml one. It supposed to be around $60 but I got it for $20! They say that the purigen beads are very small, (which they are...) so you need a special filter bag for it. This true? It is called "The bag" and it is from Seacheam like Purigen. But this "bag" costs around $30... And so in total to use it your looking at around $90! To recharge Purigen I use Discus Buffer like it states on the Purigen pack. I bought the Discus Buffer by mistake and was about to sell it but luckily I didn't. Overall, I think Purigen is very costly to use but if you are looking for perfection, it is a must.

Unfortunately, my digital camera just broke...Great timing huh? :-? It doesn't seem to playback the pictures. So I couldn't get a proper pic of them. Gross? Well, I guess it is a matter of opinion but my male that I have now isn't so bad. You'll see..
-
Yes, that is true. Many of the rams we have in NZ are much weaker like Sharn said. But still, if you choose out the strongest ones at your LFS I found they are very healthy. Some bad news is that the rams ate all their eggs... :-? But it is their first spawn so maybe next time they will get it right. I will try get a photo of the male now as he is showing off to the female often now. He kind of looks like the photo but he doesn't have shredded fins.
