  1. My clowns feed themselves and thats it! too greedy, eat too much, cant swim properly and then chill together on the surface till they lose the swollen guts.
  2. after all that effort I would put polly underneath it. not worth getting a split base ect. No machined timber is perfect.
  3. I have a 4 ft with cannister, hang on skimmer and 2500 lph of water movement. PH = sweet KH = 10 NO3 = 0 NH4 = 0 PO4 = 0 Temp = 27 deg Sal = 1.025 My stocklist isn't huge due to the fact my tank is only 5 mths old but... 1 x Agro yellow tail blue damsel. 1 x red sea sailfin tang 2 x occ. clowns 1 x bangaii cardinal 1 x purple long tentacle anemone xenia polyps star polyps lps octapus & hammer finger leathers toadstool mushies real cool white/green feather dusters Going to get more LPS but not over the top cause planning to buy house this year and then set up 6 footer and use 4 ft for sump.
  4. I know, I'm itching to put some up but I have a crappy digi camera and all the pics come out blurry!! I'll keep trying or borrow mates smicky camera.
  5. I have a 2 ft freash tank and it cost me all of 3 spot to set up and stock. ( my pantadon butterfly fish is still my fav. even over marines )
  6. I have a 4 ft with cannister, but after all the extras I easily spent more than 2 K. I plan to buy a house this year and use 4 ft as sump then there really is no budget
  7. I dont think people who need to stick to a budget should start a marine tank in the first place, we owe it to the fish and other live stock to have the bigger tanks and better gear. Not a broke mans hobby.
  8. If it helps my little fella got started on mysis (but it only took 3 days) I also notice he always picks at the coral rock in the tank.... so maybe thats what your guys are doing?? do bangaiis eat algae??
  9. have you just cleaned it? mine does this when cleaned out.
  10. If thats the case then I might give it a miss the surface and water in my tank is crystal clear, also have really good water parametres and skimmer is pulling enough gunk from tank, but it is a good idea and stoked it works for you
  11. what size and type of surface skimmer did you use, I dont have a sump and if that helps I'll give it a go and plumb one to my skimmer. Cant lose right?
  12. is it overflowing heaps?
  13. It filled the cup a few times and thats it, nothing like at first when I hooked it up that took a few days!
  14. I cleaned mine right out and found I had to run it in again. Reckon its cause it needed to rebuild slime coating so in the future I'm going to leave it till its looking pretty sad.
  15. yea I've worked out herald island and that water has that dodgy inner harbour smell, heaps of run offs
  16. have you tried blood worms ?
  17. Hey duke have they started eating ? If so what are they taking ? I got one from jansens and he's doing the same but I think its just settling in, it's been 2 days and each time I feed he takes food but spits it back out!! Granules, mysis, freash fish everything
  18. hey chimera where do you get your water from in whangaparaoa? I get mine at matakatia at high tide, gets deep real quick and is allways crystal clear.

    Filter Media

Instead of the bio balls? thats a good idea, is there much difference between rock and balls?

    Filter Media

The filter wool went a while ago, still have bio balls, ceramic rings and nylon noodles. I put carbon in a small internal filter which helps water flow. Is there other things I can put in the canister?

    Filter Media

Havn't really put any thought in to it since I set up my canister filter but what media would you recommend I use. It has two baskets and the area at the base of the filter where the bio balls sit. I have fish and coral but not a heavy load. Thanks
  23. Didnt think of that, everytime I brush up to my purple long tent. anemone it sticks like supa glue. Still it looks cruel
  24. It looks cruel, is it possible to do it a slow way, like a really tight rubber band right around the middle, could that make it want to split?? just a random idea
  25. Have you had any failed splits? That is a nasty looking knife
