  1. No fish in it at the moment. Just gonna let everything settle before putting the fish in. I have about 3-4cm of sand/pebbles on top of the Daltons. To be honest, I felt the Dalton's wasn't enough, as I used a whole bag for my tank (a 3 footer). So I topped it off with a bit more sand/pebbles instead. No filter in the tank at the moment. But I do have a CF1200 that's currently running on the spare tank with all the fish in it. Will probably move them in a few days. About 75% of the water in the tank with the fish in it is tank water, so I'll just transfer water over to the new tank.
  2. Yeah. The tank was just remade yesterday. Dad and I just did a 75% water change and am just waiting for the water to slowly fill the tank. So far visibility looks good. I am able to see the driftwood as well as the Java Moss we just tied on. Much better than yesterday and this morning when visibility of the tank was pretty much nil. Will wait for a couple of days now. Then I'll do another water change and replace half with the old tank water I saved before the tear down.
  3. Basically, I've filled my tank with Dalton's Aquatic Mix as well as some sand and pebbles. I've done one water change so far with the water slowly dribbling into the tank. So does changing the water help or should I just leave it to settle after a few days? I'm pretty sure the driftwood I have isn't leeching tanins into the water. Thanks.
  4. Just one last post to confirm that Kribs do indeed catch wayward fry with their mouths. I saw the mother trying to catch one of her larger fry in her mouth and failed repeatedly. In the end she finally managed to catch it tail first and spat it back with the others.
  5. Hey, its really surprising when a topic you made 2 years ago comes back up.
  6. Thanks for that. I plan to have about a couple of inches of Dalton's then a mixture of builders stand and pebbles on top of it. I'm doing at total teardown of my old tank so the tank would have just a little water in it while I'm doing the planting.
  7. By clown you mean clown loaches? I don't think the ones I'm getting will come in a mat, someone is giving me some. Will planting them together work better at propagating them or should I just spread them out?
  8. Yeah the fry were free swimming. I knew something was up after I did a water change about a week ago when I didn't see both parents for a day or two. I'm guessing that the fry might have hatched about 4 days ago. Well its a relief that some people have seen them catch the fry and shove them back into the nest. I'll take a closer look and see if there are any fry remaining.
  9. Well, I think they are probably about a year and half. This would be their third or forth spawning, but they seemed to be always unsuccessful at raising fry. Somehow the lot always disappears. I'm worried because it seems weird for a non mouth breeder cichlid.
  10. My Kribs seemed to have spawned yet again, however I was just watching them take care of the fry when I saw the father either catch one in his mouth or eat it. Which one happened? After catching the fry in his mouth he headed back near the entrance of the nest and came out again after.
  11. Thanks for the warning, but I have a plan in mind. I'm gonna plant the glosso before putting the pebbles in. I will of course space the pebbles out a bit so the glosso has spaces to grow. I'll go hard out on the pebbles at places I don't want it to grow.
  12. Fair enough. I'll go easy on the pebbles then.
  13. I am planning to use Dalton's Aquatic Mix on the bottom and having some sand and stones (about 2-4cm in diameter) on top of it. Will Glosso be able to grow in conditions like those?
  14. Very nice tank! Did that glasso or whatever plant grow that much in a week? Where can I get those from? Whats the official name?
  15. Cheers for that, I was just talking to a cool guy on mIRC and he gave me directions to those places too. Thanks for the help guys. Appreciate it.
  16. How does one properly set up the substrate in his tank? I have heard about using Dalton's Aquatic Mix but am unable to find a price nor a shop in Christchurch that sells it (on the net anyways).
  17. Ohh ok, I'll turn off the lights before I go to sleep then. And no, I don't think it's possible to let the moss grow before I put it in the tank as it's quite large, and took me quite a bit to actually get it in the tank. Anyways, alright then, so my plan would be: Lights out for about 8 hours a day, and buy some Flourish Excel for the plants and dose according to the specs. Would that be fine?
  18. Ok then, the lights are on 24 hours a day, and I'll be making a makeshift CO2 thingie with yeast and sugar. The Flourish Excel I'll get on TM and try it out. Will see what happens in a month or so. Hopefully it comes right.
  19. Heh, yes it does. Actually, I had just fixed the meshing just a few minutes ago. The pipes actually press against the meshing providing additional support, so that's all good. Now to wait for the moss to fill the meshing in ... At least a year heh.
  20. I had recently installed a mesh fencing behind the tank so that a Moss Wall could grow. Not only that, I started typing down whatever Moss I had to different ornaments. Now, how can I encourage the Moss to grow faster? Just by looking at the amount of Moss I had growing in the past year, by rough calculations it would take at least a couple of years for the Moss Wall to be finished. (unless I misjudged badly). Anyways, how could I encourage the plants to grow faster? The Moss seems healthy enough, it is totally bright green when held towards a light. Suggestions would be very useful. I am a bit impatient with this heh.
  21. But how would I anchor the pipes to the wall? I don't think they pipes would stick to the mesh well enough. The pipes are currently stuck to the tank using suction cups. Heh, it is plastic alright. I made sure of that.
  22. Currently, I have the pipes set up on the back of the tank, the intake is on the right of the tank, and the outflow is going from the right to the left of the tank. Now, I want to put up a moss wall (found some wire meshing at Bunnings, 1 meter x 40cm for 4 dollars) but am not sure where to put the filters. Should I put the meshing in front of the filters? Or put the filters elsewhere? It seems to me that it would be a hassle to clean the filter pipes if I were to put it at the back, but wouldn't look as nice if I were to put it at the front or the sides. Suggestions anyone?
  23. What do you have in your tank? I've got 2 pairs of Kribs and some Swordtails in the tank as well and I've never had trouble with them fighting each other. Come to think about it, I've never really seen any aggression in my tank at all.
  24. Hmm, ok. I'll buy a new impeller tomorrow. How much do they cost?
  25. Ok, I finally found out how to take it apart. Now, it seems to me that the noise is because the magnet isn't holding the impellor as hard as it could. Since it isnt as magnetic as before, when the impellor spins it rattles. Is there any way to fix this?
