Is it common to have a male Betta that refuses to flare? I've had him ever since he was 2-3cm and I've never once seen him flare. I assume he's a male as he keeps on blowing bubble nests.

I'll try to get some pictures up. I think I see maybe a couple of fat ones, but they don't have the pink belly to show. Although I noticed a couple of them looking quite interested at a pot when I changed the water yesterday. -
Don't think you should take more photos of him. He sure looks angry.

At most maybe 2 1/2 inches. That would be the largest one. The majority are 2 inches ish. -

All of mine seems to have spots on the fin. However, the bottom fin of one of them looks quite pointy, while the rest look blunt and squared. Is it safe to assume I've got one male and the rest female? -
I've been looking through Google, and I can't really tell if they are male or female. Some pictures and pointers would be great. Thank you.

Cheers for the idea. I'll wait till they grow a little bigger before I try that out. I was tempted to actually catch them out now as they aren't still that fast yet. Once they get bigger it would be near impossible. Also, how does daphnia do in Chch weather? I'm thinking of leaving a container outside the house to culture some daphnia for my fish.

Yes, I was gonna recommend Electric Yellows to him. I also recommended Rams. Oh, I should probably mention that he would like them to be ... unusually colored. My dad used to catch guppies/fighters/swords/etc from rivers and drains when he was a kid, so he would like something much different from them.

Oh ok. And I don't think I will suggest getting Aros to breed to my dad. I'm afraid that if he had to pick between the Aros and me he did pick the Aros. :-?

that's not too difficult to breed, and are easy to sell their fry? Need some recommendations thanks.

It's fine because the bettas there aren't really adults yet, they are more like teenagers. When they get older, they get more aggressive. But of course, there are special cases. I recall reading somewhere in this forum that a fishkeeper kept over 30 bettas in a tank together, and had little fights because they grew up together. Something along those lines anyways.

I am about to release my fighter into the tank because he was nipping the tails off guppies in the other tank, will he attack my mini BNs? They are around 1-2cm in size at most.

Thanks, but the ironic part was I was cursing the male BN for hiding so much. At least I know it definitely a good breeding area as I have absolutely no idea where he is.

-1 now, saw a couple of Swordtails poking at one BN baby. I think it was already dead when the swords got him, but still that's one less in my tank.

Weeeheheheheheh I've finally got a hold of someone with Kribs. I swear, every time I cant find a fish in stores she always has it. Although those Rams are definitely good looking. Do their fry sell well? My Dad told me he "wanted to show me how real fish keeping is" and is about to start a couple of tanks up dedicated to breeding. Any one got suggestions on some good looking fish that isn't that hard to breed and aren't the most common like Kribs?
