  1. Got my first hara kiri BN today. There was a tiny 1cm gap where the airline comes out of the fish tank, and the BN must have jumped out through there. (was a baby BN). However, the BN was slightly larger than 2-3cm ish, so how did it managed to squeeze itself through? I dont see how a BN could have jumped through it. Any thoughts on how I can prevent this? I've put back the proper lid instead of just a sheet of plastic just to be safe.

  3. I'm tempted to get a few Kribs. Will they be fine in a 3f tank, medium planted, with a few caves and with these following fish? Guppies Swords Male Betta BNs
  4. Will try to describe it in a bit more detail. Assume the top has nothing on it yet. There are 3 bracings, left right and center of the tank. These are running from top to bottom. Underneath these bracings are smaller pieces of glass, to provide a ledge for the lid to sit on. The side bracings are sitting on the ledges at the side of the tank, and are siliconed together. I hope that made sense. Edit - Spelling error.
  5. I assume the higher the safety factor the better? Whats the lowest it could go? (Not that I want to remove more bracings of course ..) But I should mention that underneath the bracings there are a few more piece of glass to hold on to it. Will that affect the safety factor?
  6. I think I found the problem. The other betta in the tank was not a she at all. Saw "her" blowing bubble nests. However, I never really saw them fighting at all. I've took out the male with the clumped fins and put him into a quarantine tank. I noticed he has spots on his face. Is that normal for bettas? I should say that the spots are black, not white. Was watching it closely again, and saw that the gills look ... different. I can see it breathing, theres something red coming out of the gills? Its fins and tail are all clumped up still. Should I bring it to my nearest petstore and ask for help?
  7. I cant find the camera, so I've drawn a picture instead. The red part is the one I want to remove. I think the main bracings would be the ones running from top to bottom, where else the one I want to remove would be a side bracing maybe? Underneath the bracings are another piece of glass, so that the covers can be put on it. If thats still not clear, I'll go borrow a camera. My tank dimensions are 900x450x450. Edit - Picture had problems, and the drawing is not to scale.
  8. Still no signs of her eating it, maybe she does it at night. Anyways, I'm about to make a cave for her and will probably add a male soon after that. Does the female actually need a cave or does only the male use it? If I'm about to make a cave I thought I might as well make a couple more if the female needs one as well. Currently shes hiding somewhere in the driftwood. Dont see her often. :-?
  9. It's quite hard to explain but I think its actually safer to take it off the back. Hold on, when I get the chance to find the camera I'll put a few pictures on.
  10. My tank is a 3footer. I'm sure my tank can survive without the bracing off one side of the tank, and the main reason it was put there was to ensure the lid would be able to fit properly on the tank. Will try to put up pics soon.
  11. The top of my tank has bracing all over the 4 sizes, so that a lid can easily be put on it. However, I just bought a new hang on filter, and misjudged it. The only way now is to remove one of the bracings and use the edge to hang my filter. How to I cut through the silicon?
  12. That could do as well. Just dont want him uprooting any future plants I might put in. Thanks for the info.
  13. How much cucumber do I put in exactly? I feel like I've been putting too much and she barely touches it, I think. Anyways, I'm trying to get a male BN and am about to make a cave. How does quick dry cement work in a tank? Is it safe? Else I'm gonna just get a pot and some silicon glue with some rocks. (saw it somewhere ... on this forum maybe?)
  14. I would guess so. Will take a look at Mitre 10 tomorrow thanks.
  15. Sorry to hijack your topic, but I too am looking for some lighting for cheap. I was thinking of actually just making it. What do I need besides the tube and the tube holder? Does the tube holder come with wiring all preinstalled? If not , will it possible to wire it to a normal electrical socket and plug it in the wall? The covering will be easy, as dad has tons of spare wood around. Just worried but the wiring thats all.
  16. She hasnt touched the cucumber at all yet. Will check tomorrow morning if she even ate it. Will start washing and putting in gravel into the tank soon. Should I remove all the fish before putting in the gravel or would they be fine with it?
  17. I think its because he has no where to hide near the surface of the water. This tank is totally bare except for a piece of driftwood. He used to like hiding and resting in the Red Rotala you sent me a few months back. I'll put some in immediately and hopefully he'll be better.
  18. That I know is a must, but I was told some stones are harder/softer than others, so before you put them in the tank you gotta put some vinegar on it and something happens. I dunno if I should test for that or not.
  19. Thats is whats happening to my Betta after I transfered him from his old tank to the new one. Whats happening to him? He was transfered about a month ago, and has been this way for quite a while now.
  20. I put a piece of cucumber for her today in the tank. I stabbed a toothpick through it and onto the driftwood. Waiting for results now. Also, I went to the petstore to get a price quote on some gravel. For a bag of I think 10kg they quoted me $60. Then I went to a gardening center and bought a bag of slightly bigger gravel for $10. 8) Just to double check, how do I test if the gravel is suitable? Something to do with vinegar was it?
  21. Cool a girl! How big do they be before they start breeding? Perhaps I'll just feed her twice a day for a few weeks before buying a male. As for the prawns idea, I never knew BNs were carnivors. I thought they just ate veggies. Heck I never knew guppies ate prawns as well.
  22. I'll try not to spoil s/he. When does a BN usually develop its bristles? Mines about .. 4-5 cm ish, and have no bristles at all. Also, where could I get some gravel in Chch? The only ones I've seen are quite expensive from Bunnings.
  23. So how about I feed him (and future thems) a slice of cucumber every second day? Would that be acceptable? And flakes are my bane, everytime I feed flakes my other fish dont eat the ones that fall to the ground. At least I know my BN will eat it.
