  1. Thanks for the tips, will head out and buy some tomorrow. My tank has a 2f long driftwood in it, and since s/he is the only one in there, I did assume he would have enough to eat. Now the hard part is finding him. I've looked everywhere and he seems to have dissappeared. Hm.
  2. Got my first BN today, and just realized, what do I feed after the algae in my tank is all eaten up? Will half a slice of cucumber or a little lettuce be enough for him? Hes about nearly 2 inches.
  3. Hm weird, I only started noticing the snails in my other tank after I removed my fish from them. Do gupppies/WCMM/swords/fighters eat snails or their eggs? I left the plants in the old tank so that they would grow more, then I noticed the snails after a few weeks. Maybe I should toss one of my fish back in there with no food?
  4. How long do I dip it in for? Also, the whole plant?
  5. Any specific instructions? I dont wanna put the stones in the tank and see my fish dead the next day.
  6. Well, I'm trying to eradicate all snails before I move the plants and rocks from the snail infested tank to the new one. Snail traps wont work, so that chemical one sounded good. Any other suggestions?
  7. Wanting to recycle some plants and rocks from my old tank to my new one, whats the best way to remove snails? I dont really want to get a few loaches.
  8. Everything really, from numbers required to tank size to food.
  9. Thanks, will take a look at rams and dwarves then. On other news, I finally filled my 3footer today, and tossed in 4 sacrificial WCMMs. (had them for 1 year now, no fry yet. Getting annoyed) Pics come soon, but expect nothing because I only filled it half just so that I can get some more room for more fish that I'm buying. Got some Neons, BNs and probably more guppies coming in. Fun times coming up! Edit- Tell me more about Blue Rams please. Did a little research and they seem reasonable.
  10. Cichlids get too agro for the fish I want to keep, not to mention them needing hard water. I want just freshwater small fish.
  11. I did have a horde of angry people around me though, I thought the general consensus on Aros are at least a 6f tank.
  12. Ah crud, I think I'll just scrape the discus idea then. My tank is a 900x450x450. I was just toying with the idea of getting a few bigger fish, as I want this tank to have quantity over quality with maybe a few biggies, hence getting lots of small fish such as swords and guppies. So far here's a list of whats gonna be in it: Guppies Swords Bettas WCMMs Neons BNs Mollies I want some slightly bigger fish, but cant think of any. Ideas anyone?
  13. I was told the other day that having 3 discus in a 3f tank would be fine. But I thought that discus needed to be in groups of 5+ to be happy? Can anyone verify this? Also, would discus make good tankmates with guppies, swords, bettas, BNs and smaller fish?
  14. Oh now I get it! So either ways, by breeding ones from the auction, it will be possible to get a few normals, GBAs and normals with the GBA gene. Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll go place a bid in the auction. Since they cant be sexed yet, how many should I get? 3-5? Keep in mind my 3footer is not ready yet and they can only go into a 1.8ish f tank thats being shared with a 3 guppies, 4 WCMMs, 3 swords and 2 fighters. I do have a spare tank lying around, but I doubt I can find any driftwood for them. Edit: Also, is the fry a GBA with BN colours or a BN with GBA colours?
  15. I dont get it. Could you please explain that in normal English please? Sorry, but biology isnt my best subject.
  16. I'm still looking for reasonably priced BNs or GBAs around Chch, and I noticed this auction: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 189492.htm Question, it says the mother is a GBA and the father is a normal BN, if I understand it correctly. Does this affect the fish in any wa? Eg what can I expect from breeding them, etc etc. Thanks for the help in advance.
  17. Dont worry Tim, I'll find a way. I might actually try either cutting it and siliconing it back together again. Thanks for the help, will keep this updated on how I went.
  18. Ah crud, I just purchased a bigger tank, however the bracings make it nearly impossible for me to fit the driftwood in. Suggestions on how best to do it?
  19. Can they survive in a tropical tank that has guppies, swords, bettas in it?
  20. It's not me I'm worried about, its the fish. I prefer keeping the more "common" fish such as guppies, swords, mollies etc etc. I want to have a tank FULL of them. So in order to have that, I either need to saw the driftwood or buy a bigger tank. But the driftwood just looks too good I reckon. Either ways the tank I'm getting would just be slightly wider. Maybe a 36x18x18. This tank I might keep for a breeder tank. I was actually thinking of covering the base with Java Moss, and tying Ricca to the top parts, hoping that it would creep down and cover the whole driftwood. Then I want some of the bigger plants covering the back part of the tank, giving it some background. There would be a little substrate, maybe 3 cm. Of course, here comes the next problem: Ricca. I cant seem to find any at all around the Chch petshops. I've seen others but not Ricca. Where can I find some?
  21. The pic doesnt really show how big it is, the driftwood actually takes up more than 3/4 the tank in length. I'm getting a bigger tank because it barely fits into the current tank, and there it litterally no space for plants at all. And even if I managed to squeeze a few plants in, there would be no room for my fish at all lol. Either that or saw it. What does everyone think?
  22. Was looking around Animates at Moorhouse yesterday, and saw a big piece of driftwood. Thought my tank would be able to take it, but I was wrong. O well, I was about to get a bigger tank anyways. Maybe a 4footer ... Or perhaps I should saw it?
  23. Don't think its a drug abuse thing. I've read about Oxygen bars in places like Japan, where you pay to basically breathe pure Oxygen. Its a definete change from all the pollution and stuff.
  24. Yeah, I was guessing that, hopefully he gets used to his surroundings. The other day, I was hoping he was calm enough to flare at his own reflection, so I showed him a mirror. First thing he did was run and hide at his usual hiding place. Wont do that again. I'll just feed him and leave him alone. Hopefully he'll be betta.
  25. No light at this stage, I'm still in limbo about my next tank. I am still deciding if I should use the one I've acquired, or go for the easy way out and pay a little more to get one that has all included. But when I do get the tank though, I know it'll look better. Another question I've got: The betta up there in pictures refuses to come out of its hiding place (in the plants). I've managed to get it eating, and it comes out for a small swim once in a while but it prefers to hide/sleep/eat in the plants. Any way I could coax him out or should I just let him get used to the tank? He's been in there for about 2 weeks.
