  1. hey, i have an ar980 too, they are 215l and the pump in them is 900lph (well mine is) i took out the carbon supplied and replaced it with more noodles and other bio media. i also drilled the holes out bigger in the spray bar. ive had some rather large bio loads(lots of fish) in the tank at times and havnt had any problems with keeping ammo and nitrite at 0ppm

  7. hey, over the last week i noticed that one of my yellows had a bit large throat area. so just before i read up on how to strip them. to a great surprise she had 10 large babys swim out of her mouth it was a bit of an effort to get them out but we got there. we left the babys in a breading trap in the main tank. Im just wondering what i should feed them. would micro worms or brine shrimp be good or just crushed flake? the female is extremely stressed at it was our first time stripping and her first lot of babys. any advice on raising them would be appreciated!!

    new project

yeah at this stage i think im going to stick with a sodastream setup. the plug in generater seems to be a bit cheap for what it does. a few questions about fish.. i thought that the corys would be a bad choice because of them digging around the roots of the plants? what would rams or they ok with plants?? also what kind of kelvin rating should i get. the MH that i wanted came with a 14k will that grow the plants or would i be better trying to find something around the 6500k? oh and with the substrate woud it be a good idea to mix some peat into it??

    new project

hey thanks for all the help. what is the difference between the sodastream setup and the pressurised setup?? i just went to one of the local garden shops and they sell aquatic mix for $20 of 20kgs for im going to go with this i think, they said it was pretty much clay. how thick should this layer be and then how think should the normal substrate be? is there a recipe for a homemade fert mix?? i would search but it dont work

  14. hey all well ive started my new project already and looking for some advice ive made a 250l tank (1mx0.5x0.5) and have brought a nice rimu stand for it. my plans for this tank is to setup my first proper planted tank. im thinking of using a 250w metal halide light with a sodastream co2 setup. im not to sure on fish choice for this tank but was thinking of maybe 2 discus and some cardinals or something. im open to suggestions on this as im not to sure on good fish for a planted tank. next is filtration, i was thinking a 1000lph canister?? what do other people use for their planted tanks? is there any advantage in using under tank heating?? or would a normal heater do the trick? what kind of substrate should i use? i was thinking of some kind of clay under the gravel or something? is there any good brands out there that dont cost to much? now for the most important part: plants. i like swords and ferns but not sure of what else is available? has anyone got any good pics of their planted tanks or pics of plants to get some ideas? also im not to sure on how to make the sodastream co2 setup. from what i gather its just a bottle with a regulator on top going to a diffuser?? am i right? what kind to regulator do i need? thanks for any help!! (heres some pics)
  15. i think that i would be more than ok. if it was only 6mm glass then yes i would have it but 10mm... ive got a mate and his tank was much larger than your one and was 10mm glass and he didnt have any bracing at all (a bit doggie tho) i have a tank thats 1150x300x600 (600 high) and that 6mm glass and thats only got bracing on the sides and thats been setup for about 2 years now, but there is a bit of flex in the middle of the tank so i plan on adding a center brace to that one. imo i think that it would be more than sweet!

    filter

i need to top up the sump with some more bio media and was wondering what the story is with scoria. ive heard of people saying that you need to treat it with hcl acid and bleach and some people say that they dont and never had. im looking for opinions from people that have had experience using it and people that may of had bad experiences with it as i really dont want to use it if i have to treat it.
  20. yeah on my african tank i have a twin four foot fitting and i put a philips coral one (blue) and a cool white one. looks very good and would recomend them. having the blue light with the white light looks really good and makes the tank look extreamly clear! also brings out a lot of the blue colour in my fishes out. carnt wait to see some pics when its all setup :bounce:
  21. hey, i have just setup my project tank and its going fine without any hic ups so far (fingers crosed). ive used a sump for my tank, the cost of the sump its self was only about $50 (made it my self). the main cost was in the bio media and the pump. still im much happyer with my sump and all up only costed about $400 with 3 300w heaters as well. so for the size of my tank(835l total) worked out much cheaper than canisters. the other benifit with the sump is that it adds extra water volume to the tank which in end will dilute the toxins here is a link to my topic which has a pic of the sump design i used. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/americ ... 14627.html its a bit noisey but unless it was in my bedroom it wouldnt be a problem. i also plan on sound proofing the stand that the sump is in with poly and egg cartens then mdf on the outside. so noise wont be a problem then. hope this helps
  22. haha thats exatly the same as my mates o and yeah he had to get a nightlight too.
  23. hey im just wondering if some of you can post some pics of your o setups. im trying to figure out how im going to lay out the tank decor and what im going to use and could do with some fresh ideas i have 2 os at the mo and plan on getting 2 more. my two are only small at the mo so i think they be ok with new entries. my mate has 3 os and i know what you mean about '3rd wheel syndrome'
  24. yeah he wasnt like that when i got him as a baby. the bigger he gets the more black comes through. i just want to get a albino tiger and black tiger now
  25. finaly got the tank setup with the fish in it two :bounce: the total liters of the system(sump and tank) is 835l.
