  1. Hey Chin, why are these called albino's? They don't have the red pupil associated with albinism.
  2. Your lighting depends what type of tank you have; size, what type of plants, etc. Perhaps if you are able to give us some info we can help you out a little better.
  3. You need to have a nice balance of lighting, fertilisers and CO2 in your tank. With all these at optimum levels and a nice substrate, you will get great growth. The trick is finding the balance, and what works for some people, will not necessarily work for others.
  4. Hey there, I had camillanus in some of my fish a while back, and got given some Levamisole, it worked a treat and the fish were fine throughout the whole process. Here's how it goes. Do a really big water change; 90% or so making sure to vacuum the bottom of the tank well. Add the amount of levamisole needed for your sized tank (1mL per 20L) (pays to get a cup of aquarium water and mix in the levamisole to that, then tip it into the tank). Make sure to monitor your fish well throughout the medication, you can do a 48 hour treatment if the fish look fine, but 24 hours will suffice. After the 24/48 hours do another massive 90% water change making sure to vacuum the bottom really well again. Wait two weeks, then repeat the whole process. Hopefully your fish will be fine after this.

    Aquarium Water

It really depends on what type of fish you have in your tank; malawi cichlids (African) require a pH of around 8.2, however, American cichlids can be anywhere from 4 to above 7. If you are keeping a community tank with general fish like tetras and the like, a pH of 7 would be fine. What is the pH of the water coming from the bore?
  6. It doesn't matter really, I guess you would just go to sand level as to not disturb the aquatic mix and get a puff of ferts coming up into the water. The roots will soon grow into it.
  7. Shiuh, you don't rinse the aquatic mix as that washes away all of the useful fertilisers in it. You do need to rinse the sand though. When the sand is sitting on top of the aquatic mix, all the ferts in the aquatic mix cannot get into the water so you don't end up with a cloudy tank.
  8. I've heard that some of the chch importers/shops supply some of the Auckland shops with imports; not sure what types though.
  9. Perhaps your male is unfortunately sterile? Do they get much current over them?
  10. Aahh, but that's where you must think outside the box, instead of using substrate buried plants, use java moss and/or fern, I think it would look awesome. If you have enough lighting you could perhaps do a nice carpet of glosso underneath too, simple and very effective 8) . I say at least try doing something cool with it, and if it's still too big for you, then get a bigger tank
  11. Sand is good, and looks nicer in my opinion. Darker substrate looks better too cos it contrasts with the fish/plants' colours. You can go to a nearby river (if you have one) and just take the sand from there, it's lightly coloured, but still looks nice.
  12. Hi there, I'd like to artificially raise some apisto fry, and was wondering how much I need to add. I recently tried and put a few drops into about 1.5L of water and only got two fry from well over 100 eggs. Just wondering how blue the water is supposed to be? Thanks.
  13. Hey, go to private trade and exchange, there's a thread there about it. Basically, salt water is more dense than freshwater, so the two stay apart, quite clever really.

    Filmy layer.

I do have the curtains open during the day, but it has a white curtain thing that would prevent a fair bit, and the tank doesn't get direct sunlight either. Maybe I'm leaving the halide on too long?

    Filmy layer.

It's green, and bubbles, so it's photosynthesising, so it must be an algae. Should I just leave it?

    Filmy layer.

Just recently a filmy layer has formed on the surface of my planted tank as you can see below. I have no idea what it's from, I know it's not from poor water quality as I have been doing 85% water changes on the tank daily the last few days.
  17. http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2006.cgi?&op=showpage&name=view-showcase Have a look there, some very nice planted tanks.
  18. Yea, but that'd prob just end up like the guppies, or amazon fish. Don't get me wrong, I'd be all for bettering the quality of discus in this country, however, there would have to be a LOT of interest for it to happen. High quality discus would come with a high quality price tag too, if they're anything like the prices of the ones already, which some people I am sure would find slightly unappealing.
  19. That's only in freshwater systems because salt water is more dense than freshwater, so the two stay apart However, in a saltwater aquarium, these two would mix.
  20. Yes, it would work, but your plants wouldn't like it much. They don't really enjoy having much water movement over their roots, especially the amount a canister would produce. I have a planted tank, and I never gravel vac simply because there is not enough open gravel to vacuum. Your plants will use the detritus.
  21. The three ones I've used in my tank are glosso, tenellus and hairgrass. Tenellus and glosso require higher light, but you shouldn't have a problem with the MH on top.
  22. Why do you say it's not easy? I have put it in my tank straight away from getting it from the river and it's done fantastically. Also gave Luke* some, that he put in his tank which is also doing really well. I hadn't had any problems with it, and I'm pretty sure Luke's didn't either.
  23. You're also missing the very first line of the auction. No mention of a CO2 system for sale in this auction.
  24. Wow, that second one is awesome, it looks huge.
