  1. I think she'd just be digging a pit, that's what mine did...never went down to the glass beneath the gravel, which wasn't very deep at all. A bigger tank is always better, rams can lay a lot of eggs (I counted approximately 300 with mine) so that means a lot of fry if they do the job right. So yea, a bigger tank if you can, you'd definitely need another one anyway if you're planning on keeping the babies. Maybe Phil got some rams in or something with his amazon import? I suppose there's a high possibility he could've.
  2. Terracota pots are good to use, that's what I use in my discus tank. They should be fine over the time, but will appreciate the water changes when you get home. I would say move them over to the bigger tank because it will be more stable than the smaller one.
  3. Shot man, sounds exactly like breeding behaviour to me, mine did the same. When they shake in the gravel, they'll be making a small pit to lay in. The male could be a little stressed because the female is possibly hassling him a bit. Can we see some pics of the fish? I didn't know we had wild rams in NZ, if I did I would have bought some Good luck with them, and the fry Oh, and if they're wilds, they'd probably be quite good and raise their fry themselves. Are you able to give them a bigger tank? 2 footer at least I'd say if you left them with parents (rams grow fast).
  4. Thanks for your kind words, appreciate it.
  5. Hi there, I'm lucky and have a window right next to my tanks, so I just use the gravel vac and siphon the water straight out the window. You could try getting a longer tube to stick onto your siphon and push it out the nearest window when doing them? What I found most annoying about water changes was filling the tank back up. All I have is an aging bin in my room with a decent sized pump with hosing attached. I fill the bin up after my water change with the hose (conveniently right outside my window too 8) ), and the bin has its own heater in there. This heats the water overnight, and also the chlorine in the water diffuses into the air, thus leaving the water chlorine free. All I have to do now is empty the tank, then fill it back up again with water at just the right temperature. If you're having to do lots of water changes, I find this method very easy, and a lot better than lugging buckets (but if you get your kicks out of punishing your kids with this, by all means continue )
  6. Thanks everyone, the tank's 60 long, 45 deep and 50 high. They don't really need the height so it's only about 1/2 to 3/4 filled. Tank is 135L all up so I'd say somewhere between 80-100L of water in there at a guess.

    glosso.

It should be fine in your tank as long as you have enough light.
  8. Since the parents are already proven to look after their fry, why not keep them with the parents next time? They will probably keep them much longer next time, and may even stay with them until you choose to separate them. Fry do grow much faster when with their parents. You could perhaps do what Billaney did with his angelfish and keep half with the parents, and then raise the other half yourself?
  9. I just did a google search on peace lily's, it's definitely not that, the leaves are completely different. If you do a google search for anubias nana you will see the flowers do look similar, but it's the leaf shape that gives it away.
  10. Is peace lily another name for anubias? Because I'd strongly say that that is anubias, that's what the plant looks like when it flowers anyway.
  11. I would aim for 1W per Litre, but anything from .6 upward is fine.

    Planted Nano

Well I was considering going with the FX5, but with this size tank I think I'd need two of them, plus the CO2 bottle and all that, the prices just add up. I'm not really sure how it's going to go, I don't think I was cut out to look after a tank this big! Mystic, what about half a pacu?
  13. Yip, anubias flowers all the time under water when given good conditions
  14. That's why the tank looks crap. I say a water change at least every couple of weeks on a community tank would be required.
  15. After being inspired by the video HandS posted not so long ago, I thought I'd give my apisto's a new home (I felt a bare bottom with a pot can't have been very exciting for them). Pretty much constructed from; River sand Broken up bits of driftwood (very fun to break up with tomahawk) Dead leaves Couple of clay pots underneath it Java moss Java fern 'windelov' Anubias nana Hairgrass here and there I know the java moss/fern and anubias aren't from the amazon, but they seem to fit with the scheme of things. Front shot View from right hand side Mr. B Mr and Mrs. B There's some peat mixed in with the gravel and peatey water is put in each day to tint the water and lower the pH (just to make them feel like home).

    Planted Nano

    Hey there, I got bored tonight and thought I'd make a little, tiny, nano tank 8). Weighing in at a massive 300mL its occupants are: Gravel Tincy piece of driftwood Java moss Hairgrass There's a couple of wee snails in there too. No filtration on the tank and I've just stuck it under the halide giving a total of 500W per Litre of water . I think the halide will keep the water nice and warm too, not that it really needs it in this weather. Anywho, here's some pics;
  17. Yea, it's fine, it means you've got great conditions for your plants, well done! Nice looking tank you've got there.
  18. Nice, are they growing in the substrate in the same tank?
  19. My aponogeton crispus's did the same thing. All I did was brush them so the seeds fell onto the water. A few weeks later I had a new plant growing. You could try putting all of the seeds together into an ice cream container filled with some of your substrate and water and see what happens. Good luck.
  20. You could always put your hatchery on top of one of your tanks. That's all I do as it keeps them warm enough.

    400ltr pond

Looks like the cord for the powerhead.
  22. My panduro's were real placid too, which I thought was real strange (I've heard from so many different sources that panduro are supposed to be the most aggressive of their genus). It wasn't until after the eggs were gone that they started fighting. Congrats with the spawn and I hope you and Hands do better than I did
  23. awesome vid, if only they played more...
  24. Female apisto's always go yellow when in breeding condition.
  25. So they do, thanks Jettin for clearing that up.
