  1. Sorry, I didn't read your first post very well but I think you might be right in saying it's a cross between a gold and blue ram. That shouldn't stop them from breeding though..
  2. I don't really trust finnage when it comes to blue rams, I just go by the pink belly. Maybe there's something wrong with the male? Here's what my old male and female used to look like: Male Female
  3. First female and second an average male

Steel blues are average as.. I have kept, so I know we have: cockatoo's panduro A.sp.pebas bitaeniata trifasciata agassizii and there were so many more that phil imported ages ago, even though most of them were mis-labelled like: A. norbertii inka maulbrüter and no doubt a lot more. I know for sure the first list are still around except for maybe the pebas, don't know how well they're doing since I sold them. I so wish the inka's did better as they are my favourite tropical fish of all time.
  5. I have a group of 7 of these now and when I turned the light on this morning they were all racing around the tank madly. Then I saw a puff of eggs slowly sinking I have never seen tetras spawning before so it was pretty cool to witness.

More hiding places would be handy as they can get pretty agro towards eachother. Try get a few caves going with small entrances too. You don't have to move the oto's as they won't really be a threat to the eggs but watch them so they don't get bullied too much. Most apisto's are easy to breed as long as the water is right, you just have to hope they are good parents What's nicest looking is really up to you.. but most available would be cockatoo's. I haven't seen agassizii mentioned recently so perhaps you could try track down some of those. Triggers for spawning usually is a nice diet of live food and a cold water change. They eat most foods but spoil them and you should see results
  7. Got a bit of algae but it's slowly reaching for the sky
  8. Those dark red leaves look awesome
  9. They spawned but (I'm guessing) ate the eggs. Fingers crossed for the future. Managed to get a nice snap of the male today:
  10. Those are impressive insects, I would love to see them moving about

    diy co2 mix?

I just drill a hole smaller than the tubing diameter so the tubing is really hard to pull through, that makes a good seal. That link is a good read, thanks aquilam
  12. Yea Skippy that's always a possibility but all the ones I could see have been eaten anyways. Most tetras require their eggs to be left in the dark for them to hatch so I'd assume these guys to be the same.
  13. A mod changed it because apparently 'root' might offend someone I was pretty wrapped that they spawned, it's a pity she didn't stick around for another go.. still no sign of a body or a smell around the room so I'm stumped
  14. I'm positive they are eggs, and the fish isn't stuck anywhere, I've pulled up all the rocks, and not in the canister either (it was off last night). I think I will just give her the point and stop worrying..at least she got to mate before she died
  15. The only other fish in there are two small apisto's about the same size and no cat. Just me. The behaviour of the remaining two is what's really getting me...maybe they witnessed something terrible
  16. I went to bed last night with 3 blue cochu tetra's in my tank. I woke up with 2 in my tank and no body. Anywhere. There are also adhesive eggs all over the tank (glass, rocks, substrate, plants). so I'm guessing they spawned last night. The missing fish was VERY fat and had been feeding on live food, bloodworms and flake. There was definitely no sickness and the fish looked very healthy. I can't find her body anywhere in the tank, canister filter or in my room... The other two aren't swimming around like they normally are and instead are sketching out down by the gravel. Any ideas??
  17. Ah, yes it was waiting for me when I got back so it must have arrived xmas eve. The xmas moss is on the right hand side branches. Thanks phoenix it looks great
  18. Has what reached where? Got a few more plants in here but I went away for a few days so the plants didn't have any light over this time and have suffered. I set up some DIY CO2 today and I'm waiting on Organism to re-open so I can get some more plants/fish. with flash
  19. $48 a pair, pretty cheap really for a rarer type when some places are selling blue rams for $30 a pop
  20. I couldn't help myself the other day and bought a pair of these guys for my planted tank. They are a cute little fish and stay pretty small so they will suit the tank well, I may even get another female within the next few weeks. The male is showing off a lot and the female is starting to hold her own a bit which is good. I think the male has a lot of potential and when he gets older will be very colourful. female male male showing off Redwoods has quite a few more if anyone else is keen
  21. He was about 4cm I'm really wishing I kept him now.. the photo's aren't the best but they should hopefully help.
  22. This tank is going to look very cool, nice sketches!
  23. I don't suppose you know what this guy is? He was hanging round my pond ages ago and I have absolutely no idea what order he belongs to let alone what species it is... Unfortunately I didn't keep it but I wish I did as I've only ever seen one other of these before I've got a few more pics if you need them
  24. Thanks all. Small update: Got a few plants off Jenniferh the other day so planted them up and got a few Blue Cochu tetra's to help with the cycle. I plan to have ~9 of these all up and I think they will be a nice contrast against the plants. I've got a few more plants coming this week and I can't wait to get my hands wet again. The fish seem very happy and have had a nice feed of insects that have landed on the water's surface over the last couple of days. I haven't had much luck in finding apisto's but there are a few A. trifasciata at Redwoods I could be tempted to buy later on down the track. Anyway, enough yabbering on
