  1. Long pipe looks like top of a durso or something like that? Good idea though livingart I will have to put that away for the next time I need one although I think my undergravel filter plates are the only treasure I actually threw out..
  2. Yeah I had to setup something semi descent I was sick of mucking around and managed to source a container cheap enough It is so much easier than insulating a garage and is far better insulated than I could do myself without alot more cost. danval I will try for some pics of the apistos they aren't that photogenic and are in the 2fts that are end on and filled with plants, many of my tanks are scratched and have water stains on the front so that makes it even harder to take pics but sometimes I get a good one. Maybe that is an excuse for you to come up and visit and see them? Not that I have anything more than you..
  3. How much is alot of water? I brought some pond stuff when I was worried about that sort of thing and one 500ml bottle treats 6250L of water which is more water than my 45 tanks hold so it would last a long time.
  4. lol I am sometimes guilty of not reading the whole thread too but here is the pricing he posted on the first page I have been following this one closely too because I would love to do a tank like this one day as well. My only question is I thought that marine tanks took ages to cycle the live rock but this one went from filling to fish in less than a month, from previous reading most people would suggest this is far too fast so I am wondering what the story is there?
  5. lol you are welcome anytime mate was good to have your help the other night Will send you a PM about the glass, unsure when I will be out your way next. Giraffes are in a breeding tank at the moment so while they aren't for sale hopefully some of their babies will be in the future..
  6. Yeah there is alot of room so it worked out well, I was concerned that it might not be big enough but there is still plenty of room to walk down the middle with tanks on either side. The room is so well insulated that once it is upto temp it doesn't take much to keep it there, I also have a dehumidifier running which adds a bit of heat to the room and helps soak up any spills.

    worms

Yeah stick something down and wet it the worms tend to gather there.
  8. Yeah it can be a sign of worms or that the fish is getting smacked around and not getting enough food, again pictures may help with that..
  9. Ok so its been a while since I moved and a few people have been asking me how this has been going so thought it was about time to put up some pics.. It is still a mess and very much a work in progress, also bear in mind I am one of these people that does things on the cheap so my tanks are all mixed and matched and nothing is perfect but it works I think there are 35 tanks in there and still a few more to come.. I scored a rusty old insulated shipping container quite cheap when I moved to Auckland it looks quite skungy on the outside as you can see.. This is a pic of the door showing how thick it is with insulation.. The floor is all aluminium so it doesn't matter if it gets wet. View down RHS of container every tank down here bar the 10mm 5fter is plumbed in for automatic overflow based water changes - yeah it looks ugly but it saves ALOT of time and is better for the fish changing 10% automatically quite often rather than 25-30 once a week. View down the LHS most of these tanks are bigger (2 big tanks on the stand are around 540L 5fters) so happy to do manual water changes on these. A few pics of some of the fish bear in mind these tanks are heavily overstocked more setup for keeping the fish alive rather than getting them to breed and thrive, as I get more big tanks online they will be thinned back out again. dems/yellows/ikola/peacocks. 5fter mixed My latest mission So far heating is via the 2 double fluoros and the 70LPM airpump only 2 tanks have heaters in them (because I haven't bothered to take them out yet) and they don't come on. At the moment the room is too hot with the top tanks getting close to 30C so I will have to turn the flouoros off more during the day to try and bring the temp down. Anyway that is all the pics I took will get some more that show more of the tanks and stuff later if people are interested
  10. You could add a heap of moss and chuck some Celestial pearl danios in there they aren't that unusual but they are a cool little fish and would breed a few babies in a tank that size with a heap of moss.
  11. Electric yellows should be yellow not blue? I think we do need this pic..
  12. I think you need to figure out what fish you actually have electric blues and cobalts are completely different. In order to tell if this colour change is typical you need to know what fish you have or if you have hybrids.. Either way the arched back and sunk in belly don't sound good, is the fish still eating?
  13. What type of african cichlid is it? IE what species?
  14. I would say give them a good worming, also only have 3 is probably not a good idea if 2 have paired off the 3rd will get a hard time..
  15. Yeah me too, but called HFF they said they are in stock but have no price and they had no idea when they would get one. I am assuming they are using the trademe auction to set the price of the rest of the fish in stock.
  16. Or another reason to be selective and just cull runts/deformed fish yourself But it is a good article none the same..
  17. Have you treated your discus for worms/flukes/hex? Did you get them from a shop or a good breeding? Are you matching the water parameters when doing your water changes? Are the ones going black the smallest? And I agree with Josh - how many discus do you have?
  18. That is HFF selling them so they have a breeder supplying them, I know that one of their staff members breeds a few african cichldis for them.
  19. I know a few people with them but neither have had any luck breeding them yet..
  20. I am happy to work on some african species, but would be good to find out what direction the FNZAS is taking with all of this first. I mean whats the point in getting all this info together when we still have no idea if MAF will even allow the applications or who will pay for it?

    Golden Ram

Yeah nice fish Long finned gold rams were around a few years ago and are in most the animates etc atm.
  22. Just move the filter along with the fish from the 75L tank then and run the other filter as well.. If you are sticking stuff all fish into a big tank the ammonia and stuff is so diluted it is very hard to get a large enough spike to do damage, I usually chuck a small amount of cycled media in a filter and chuck the fish in, my theory is the cycled media that you add will quickly colonise the new filter and you will be away. I have setup hundreds of tanks this way with no issues.
  23. They usually recover from that sort of injury, I have guppies in with my apistos and kribs sometimes they get the odd nip but it always grows back fine.
  24. It really depends on what you are worming for, to wipe out all common worms you really need prazi/aviverm, some I have talked to used metro as a precaution too. I think it might be a bit of an overkill myself and probably not good for the fish to whack them up with all the drugs.
  25. Some people worm fish as a form of quarantine have heard of people using prazi/metro and aviverm (obviously not all combined but one after the other) to ensure new fish are clean.
