  1. Hey Layton, Thanks alot for that... I was wondering how hard it would be im glad someone knows I am quite confident programming micros and doing circuit design etc.. But all this chemistry sounds like its over my head.. Thanks alot for your input Ryan
  2. I was wondering if there was anyway to use components and design a circuit to do it to save $...
  3. Hi I am looking at doing a uni project designing a fish tank monitor with a screen displaying temp PH, nitrates and nitrites etc. I was wondering if anyone on here knows of an electrical way (or has seen this done already) of testing these things. Obviously temp is the easy one but I haven't seen the others done yet.. Just want to find out if its too hard so I can replan if it is. Thanks
  4. lol my dwarf gourami is a survivor he was in with a tank of africans for 8 months (with the previous owner who knew know better) and had no fins when I transfered him into the community tank. Some of his fins have grown back but I dont think he'll be dying soon with what he handled in there!
  5. I just hatch them in an ice cream container in the hot water cupboard no airation etc.. and they go ok..
  6. Warm declorinated water as per usual... lol no beer or drugs either..
  7. Tank was fully cycled and i haven't got any test kits so dont really know what happened..
  8. Tank was 3 ft long.. it only had 2 baby discus and 2 small bristlenoses... So didn't loose too much, when Iwas emptying the tank I founder the larger of the bristlenoses still alive and its still kicking this morning in the tank I moved it into.. It had a fluval 3 plus internal filter and have been doing the usual feeding etc and dont nothing out of the ordinary... I have never seen anything like this and im glad it didn't happen to either of my community tanks because the only thing I thought about donig was a water change and it did nothing! I rinsed the filter in the tank water and presumed it was the problem but didn't get much gunk out of it... Is the tank suitable for other fish? How do I sterilise everything ive never seen this before so dont wanna but any babies in and loose them too..
  9. Any ideas.. i noticed the water was a bit cloudy thought nothing of it.. Did a water change and cleaned out the filter.. Came back 5 hours later to a pure white tank and all the fish dead?
  10. I stripped my red zebra and the egg sacks were huge so much so the babies couldn't move.. I stripped 25 and stuck them all in a guppy trap floating in the parents tank. Got my partner whos home all day to keep changing the water in it wheneva she realised and all of them survived to free swimming.. That was until the giraffe jumped in and ate all bar 5 a week ago Was pretty gutted, Maybe something like this is what you need to do? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/tumbling_eggs.php
  11. The general rule is you cant overfilter a tank.. Bearing in mind like joandwilly said that if your going to put something thats not a strong swimmer like a discus in there it will just end up going round in circles.. But with a external filter you can defuse the jets against something and it should be all good..

  14. I saw that pair the other day when I was in there and they were awesome fully grown and they did have both male and female together in a 3 ft tank with no divider etc I would have thought the female would have taken a bashing too but I guess these guys get on..
  15. LOL Yeah id be keen on a half dozen fry too if they breed been looking out for some good ones..
  16. Id go for either fighting or trying to breed, either way I wouldn't be concerned about it..
  17. More commonly known as electric yellows Most of your locals should be able to order them in for you, they're common as mud. Be careful you dont pay too much for them though, I know the shops up here sell them for $26.95 for a 2cm one when you get them for $8 from a local breeder..
  18. My males do that in front of a female when wanting to breed.. How big is it and what sex is it?
  19. I have treated white spot on my tanks twice in the last few months and ive had bristlenoses in them everytime, I used the blue circle whit spot cure and found it worked well. When the white spot was very minor it was gone after the first few days of treatment but I always redose on the 3rd day to ensure its well and truly gone.. Ive always used a full dose on my tanks and haven't ever lost a fish let alone a bristlenose, im unsure if thast whats recommended but its what ive always done and had no problems.. Good luck!

I have lost a few cockatoo's to the same thing and so far nothing ive done has saved or relieved them at all.. The ones I lost like that were all from fish shops and I put it down to some sort of poor treatment they possibly recieved before they got to me.. Good luck I hope she comes right!
  21. Saw someone selling 100,000 daphnia on trademe for 100 start is reserve or 130 buy now.. How do you count 100,000 and how can you try and charge that much?? Lol
  22. Last monday I got some red zebra's and I got one that was holding in the lot.. Shes in her own seperate tank in the main tank and still holding. Im just wondering if I should strip her or not? I have no idea how far along she is and dont want her to get hungry or stressed and eat them.. How far along do the babies need to be to survive outside her mouth? If I strip too early will she pick them back up and continue holding? I know shes been holding for at least a week tomorrow is that long enough? Also does anyone have any tips on how to strip her if I do end up doing it? I have been looking at this site http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping.php does this sound like a plan?
  23. I was just browsing around the net as you do and found this site it may be of use to someone... http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibil ... esults.asp
