  1. In the other thread you mentioned a treatment you use Phill? Any chance of sharing that..
  2. Firstly I should say I have never met or dealt with you and that I think all of the speices you have imported to NZ are great for the hobby and this wasn't personal at all, no matter who had started that auction if they had publically suggested creating hybrids I would have done the same. Hey yeah there are plenty of discus types but they are all strain's of the same fish ie they have the same scientiffic name therefore there are no problems with breeding all the strains together to create different ones. Your example with cockatoo's is different to what you have suggested orange flash cockatoo's tripple red's and your wilds are all the same fish, all of those colour varieties have been developed from wild strain so they are the same fish.. To me you have imported 2 different fish, they have to be different as they have different sc. names and that was what they were imported as if they were the same they would have the same sc. name and strains or colour varieties as well. Yes they will be similair as they are all appisto's but different, alot of tetra's or danio's are similair should we just cross all of them? IMO we have a few small number of descent fish in NZ and you as a professional breeder should not be suggesting cross breeding 2 different species and potentially ruining both species in NZ.
  3. To me if you have given and are selling them with 2 difference scientific names they are 2 different species and they shouldn't be cross bred it is that simple. If they are the same fish why different scientific names?
  4. Was this in the same tank as those barbs I got off you? Because I picked them as having worms, are its poo's normal or long white and stringy?
  5. I had a fully planted tank with swords in it and nothing survived they're pretty good hunters as would be the barbs
  6. Yeah your right its called MONEY! Sell as many as possible make as much as possible and sell the business.. I asked him quite clearly what he was suggesting and he said to cross the 2 species. There is no confusion.. I don't care if he wants to create a new fish or whatever it will create confusion and hybrids in NZ and that is a bad thing no matter how you look at it..
  7. Hmm just wondering what the current batch are they're 2cm's also not giraffes..
  8. Did you get them recently? Have you seen the ones floating around the stores at the moment? What are they?
  9. Yeah I was going to try and grab a heap and hopefully get pairs of each but seems like alot of work and what if they are just crosses.. lol ill just wait for someone like you to sort them all out and buy some babies down the line

Will definately do less in more water Don't worry people add driftwood to their tanks all the time and don't loose any fish.. Bottom line is if they're happy don't stress don't worry unless ph is at either extreme or not stable.
  11. I think polystig are part of the recently "pick and mix" that came in Either that or they're just a heap of nimbo randoms..

It will change your water but shouldn't change it from 7.6 to 6, if your fish are happy at 7.6 don't stress.. I say add the driftwood and keep an eye on things its not the type of thing that happens instantly with driftwood its quite natural so you should be fine
  13. What an awesome thing to suggest Lets dilute what little pure appisto's we have in NZ and create some hybrids, what self respecting fish breeder would do or suggest that?
  14. Am I right in reading that this breeder is suggesting crossing 2 species and creating a hybrid? Or am I missing something.. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =143947030
  15. Yeah a few years ago I got offered 2 females for $20ea and could have walked into hollywood fishfarm Mt roskill and picked out any number of males for $45ea, but I wasn't interested due to their size and aggression... They may sell well now, but there will be an end to the number of people who want to buy them and devote a huge tank to just them or to them and other big predators that get along.. I know there are a few pairs/trio's going around the place but haven't seen any babies apart from johannes
  16. Alex has/was selling all of his stock I got his breeding pair which I have started breeding, very nice fish The kingsizei I got weren't socolofi either they were just random mongroul zebra's from all I could tell.. Yeah I think I remember her saying she was going out to meet someone to buy it off im pretty sure it was firenz I remember asking on the auction if there were any males around. If you wanted the same colours you could go for johannii..
  17. What did you get Mark? Yeah they're boring when young but if you sell/buy them young they are cheap and if your patient and you are buying from a reliable source then you will get good fish
  18. Your tank is on the smaller side but still a good size.. 12 Demasoni and a trio of peacocks would be fine in that sized tank Basically you just have to buy 12 young fish and grow them out.. Why would you consider them unsuitable? They only grow to 2inches max so are good for smaller tanks, also you could stick yellows in with them no matter how many of them you breed they are the most common and always seem to sell well. All depends on what you want..
  19. Saulosi I haven't seen around they maybe here but someone is holding onto them if they are around There was a female for sale ages ago unsure if it was a misid'd other species or what.. We have had some dubious kingsizei come in but I haven't seen any that were descent I brought a half dozen at $24ea and they turned out to be all random so sold them off as random zebra's for $5ea I now have afra which are nicer than them and breeding so its all good I saw something advertised as rusties (Iodotropheus sprengerae) in auckland recently but they were tiny and hard to tell what they are.
  20. Everything goes in roundabouts If you can breed quality africans then you shouldn't have any trouble selling them, however how much you sell them for will depend on demand.. How big is your tank? And are you planning to put your breeders in there? I would say if you wanted to keep jullies and other bottom dwelling tangs like pulcher/brichardi you would need a fairly large tank as they can be quite agro and like to stake out their own place.
  21. Yep sword do get big and are good at eating babies theirs and other fishes
  22. If you want guppy babies to survive then stick the guppies in their own tank with plants.. Or remove the swords and emperor tetras, they will be eating the babies..
  23. I don't have any proof of that at all it was just me talking out aloud lol.. Theres only one way to find out if they're any good and that is to buy them and put them with some virgin females and see what happens.
  24. The reason they got culled was because they were all dying of diseases and throwing deformed babies, I wouldn't be surprised if the males were hormone treated or something, if they're only getting males in its for a reason so noone else can breed that strain, well I guess you can but its hard work establishing them..
