  1. I know ive seen them breeding in tanks that small.. I don't know if its recommended or not though What type of discus are you getting/or have you got Steve?
  2. Agreed with all fish we should be straight up and tell everyone what we have and what were looking for or else we may just loose species, it appears everyone with rare or sourt after fish have some sort of complex..
  3. Yeah usual story wait until the egg sack has disappeared however I have found once they can swim and still have a little bit they eat, babies do well on microworms but will eat anything that fits in their mouth. Glad to hear the male is starting to colour up, I don't think the baenshi strain that was imported lately goes yellow more an orange colour, we can but hope it goes yellow
  4. Wow looking good my baenshi had a massive brood first off too Has the male coloured up yet? If there is water flow through the ice cream container and they're getting nice clean fresh water you can leave them in there until they're 2-3cm's as this is one of the major limiting factors to leaving fish in smaller containers..

lol that is awesome.. I sometimes use this when im looking for a fishy persons house.. "1. The driveway and side of the house is filled with styro boxes, rocks, wood etc. 2. There are little pockets of sand and gravel on the front lawn, the shed is crammed with old filter parts, breeding boxes, gravel, broken nets, cracked glass covers..and the tools and lawnmower are leaning against the wall outside"

    Help my GBA

Filters don't just keep the water moving they help remove the ammonia so the fish aren't poisoned (very simply put).. What are water conditions like (do you have test kits?) if not take some water to your LFS and get it tested, is the filter you just setup cycled? Maybe you have had issues with an ammonia spike? Have you got any pictures of the wound? Be very careful doing 75% water changes as they can be very stressful and worse off for the fish better off to do more smaller ones unless thinks have gone really bad and your left with no other options.
  7. I doubt you'll find a fussy african.. And variety is good but can be risky with africans it can only take one wrong food once and they can get bloat, yes it is unlikely but you would hate for it to happen..
  8. Yeah for sure there are always bigger and more dominant ones.. And ones that just don't seem to colour up as well or the same.. I'm glad that your doing the right thing if things work out ill buy some chilumba's off you But ill probably be joining the end of a long line lol I forget that the royals were coming in at the same time, royals have been around for a while now.. I just had a thought what if the wholesalers/importers mixed a whole heap of peacocks? What do you think they would do? I think they would keep selling them as whatever they wanted... After all even though its wrong the boss would never authorise them to do whats right.. It is hard without varients listed.. But I have 2 different "strains" of jacob's both are jacob's dead ringers of pictures on the net and different varients both are also off the wholesale list but at different times and all of them are descended from imported parents and are identical to them? Both are bred here by descent breeders who only have one species in the tank and get them bagged from the shop. lol Now how do I differentiate between the 2 in naming them?
  9. Like I said to you dwalk if you want live food come out you can have for free starters of white worms, microworm's, even green water and daphnia if you want..

    gold rams

I tried that with my golds and I think they got to them at night lol so who knows They are notoriously bad parents
  11. Yep thats what he's going to try But even then there is the risk that it is an established hybrid line that throws babys of the same shape etc? Who knows what the importers have been throwing at us? I believe that the people that have had "chilumba's" for years may have had the royal blues because people have only started calling them chilumba's since the chilumba's appeared on the list its very easy to say hey that blue peacocks alot like mine mine must be a chilumba too.. One member on here did that and sold a whole heap of babies I know some people are still waiting to hear from her about sorting that out.. Who knows what Ken was thinking? From the results of this and other dealings ive had with him its evident how he deals with things and thats to take the money and run. My main concern was because of all the dodgy dealings going on we might have lost a species of peacock we may never see in NZ again.. Gutted about your rubins whats the male look like? There are a few people with them and they have started to breed so hopefully there is no risk of them dying out im sure you will find at the very least some babies in the future im unsure if anyone will have a spare female you know what they're like in a breeding programme you can never have enough!
  12. I have also seen fish being sold as "royal blues" that are the same blue all over but alot higher in the body (as stated some sort Hansbaenschi variant) these could easily be confused with chlilumba's guess only time will tell as we all know peacock id's are hard at the best of times..
  13. Awesome it sounds good Would love to get see a pure chilumba around not either of the 2 dodgy lots that have been passed around recently I am sure that Ken originally had a female and male chilumba (but as you've said it got too large to be one) but belive the problem occured when he wanted to get more females and got some random shaped ones and bred from them, although he assured people he hadn't been the babies came out random shapes and sizes. I ended up with the male red shoulder that he had (he thought it was a female...) and he had brought that later apparently as a chilumba female so it was all a mess. I hope that you have more luck seeing the babies grow out would be a dead giveaway especially if they start doing random things.
  14. Yeah I feed them occasionally maybe once or twice a month. If you fed them daily you may run into problems but in moderation should be fine
  15. That maleri red he got from me is from whispering echo's line Johannes Whipering echo brought the parents of the ones I got babies off I ended up with 5m 1f and sold of extra male's one of which is in this tank.. Difference between Jacob's and Baenshi, yeah they are similair, jacob's are a different colour, have more yellow/oragne going into their head and have larger white stripes on dorsal/anal/tail which hasn't happened in the fish that is pictured..
  16. Tank looks good man! Did you still have the dragons blood male you got off me? How many fish are in there at the moment?
  17. I didn't my wife hates my bacon and egg's but I got the baby up and let her sleep in lol.. And cooking a roast for tea Happy mothers day to all the mothers out there.
  18. I think she has 15-16 of them from memory.. Mekhaela is there still a dragons blood in there? lol
  19. lol a bit of poly isn't going to save anything if the table bow's..
  20. that sucks Did you make it known to the fishroom people? I have nothing against buying a fish and it getting whitespot due to stress but fish in shop tanks for sale with it is unacceptable it is very easy to spot and fix..

    gold rams

Awesome I had mine lay about 6-8 times and never managed to raise a baby hopefully she has more luck!
  22. Those guys look awesome! Trets have changed alot and front's seem to have matured alot Congrats that tank must be looking wicked now I can't wait to come up and see it again..
  23. Sounds like you did suck up the babies, surely you would have noticed the egg's and the fish acting strange? As I said earlier if you want microworms let me know and come out and grab some..
  24. PH doesn't have to be anything for them to live.. They are both african cichlids and prefer a higher ph anything 7.5+ should keep them happy, and they will live together but both can be quite agro and kadango's can get quite big what size is your tank?
  25. They should be half grown by now around 3cm's now.. I would add some peacocks you could try some zebra's as well.. Cobalts or red zebra's or something like that would be cool
