  1. Peter at port Nicholson glass makes good tanks
  2. Thanks for sharing the pics it looks like a good setup I think it is very hard to figure out what would make things better for us here in NZ regarding fish, I also wonder if we would ever be happy with what we have and what we can get, a bit like money can we ever have enough? I don't think price is the issue with people keeping fish, even if discus were 50C each there would still be a large number of people who don't want to get fish poo water on their hands/don't have the time to look after them/don't want their carpets wet etc etc.. It is a very limited and specialised market.. All I can say is if you have big plans and theories that you believe in that much write up a business plan and do it, I would love to see you be right
  3. That is a very nice greshakei They are awesome fish however I found they were the "firey ginges" of the fish world and tended to beat the snot out of everyone..
  4. Just chuck it in gradually, are you going to mix it? You can just add it say half a kg at a time every few days, I would probably just chuck it in as I think it would take a while to actually start working.. Or you could just remove the fish strip the tank set it all up with the coral sand, have the fish in a big bucket or spare tank and acclimatise them over a number of hours to the new tank water.
  5. I sell fish through here and trademe, most people on here just pm me and ask for stuff.. Trademe sales are random most don't use this forums nor seem to join after I recommend it which is interesting maybe they do join and just lurk or something guess you would still find alot of info that way..
  6. My fish room is done with a boyu 70LPM one it is great a bit rattly but as long as you know you have to replace diaphragms its all good

    VECTON UV

No real benefit they will help clear up any algae in the water or any parasites etc.. But you are best to find the cause of the algae and only use for a short time if you want to treat something..
  8. lol anyone is welcome here to look at the fish Not much schooling though I only know what I know from countless hours of surfing around the net.. And also trying stuff so always happy to talk about what I think would work and what wont, the great thing about fish is someone will always prove you wrong and you can never stop learning..
  9. lol save me a female steel blue if you do strip your tank Sounds like you have a good plan if you put in enough rock work and only stock with yellows and dems the population should increase itself when they do mature and start breeding.. Dems are pretty easy really, just buy lots of them and they will be fine, I think not buying enough is half the problem people will encounter with them..
  10. Some nice tanks there I got sick of piling the rocks that high it was a pain in the bum to get them all out to catch a fish! You are best with 1m and heaps of females however that isn't always possible making up for it with sheer numbers is the best way and don't be tempted to thin out too many excess males it caused trouble with my original colony that I lost.. Like I said if you want to come and have a look you are welcome to
  11. Sounds like you have a good plan and a good sized tank to start with If you want to come out and see mine you are welcome too, I will have some for sale in the future as mine are just starting to breed properly now have a few people to sort out first though My tank is only 3ft but taller, I used darker substrate to bring out the fishes colour more and burried limestone and coral rock to buffer the water. There are a few river rocks and some random plant that grows alright seems to grow more than they eat it also a few peococks, trio of red empresses and 21 dems (dominant male from different place at different time etc) which I will be adding a couple from each spawn to and build upto a colony of 40 or so. Your clown loaches and pleco's maybe alright with the demasoni its a hit and miss type thing. Good luck you wont regret it
  12. Yep giraffes.. And assuming a rough adult size of 20cm that tank is huge.. I think it looks awesome
  13. How much you will need will depend on what your water is like out of the tap (ie how much buffering it needs) and it is not a case of adding heaps of it will make your ph go through the roof, it reaches a point where it wont raise it anymore. Most of my tanks are sitting between 7.8 and 8.2 using most of the things that I have suggested depending on what I have lying around, stability is probably more important than the actual value but I try and get it above 7.5. Gradually adding what you are using for buffering should do the trick and not stress the jewels too much
  14. Yeah id say your tank would be awesome for what you are suggesting I currently have 21 dem's, yellows, red empresses and some peacocks in a 140L 3ft tank and they are going fine. I will obviously have to move the empresses as they will outgrow it but the rest are fine. Dems are awesome you could do 20-30 in your tank provided filtration and water maintenance is upto the task. You can add coral rock, coral pieces, crushed coral, argonite, shells, limestone rock, dolomite lime etc etc to buffer your ph it really depends on what you can find. I have a few africans for sale at the moment if your still looking for some but sounds like you have made up your mind
  15. Glad to hear the arrived safe and sound, I always hate packaging fish that big heavy duty xxl bags help though And also thanks heaps to Sandy for delivering them for us. funny that the blue dolphin has become attached to them I hope they settle in well.
  16. Yeah they are awesome that's for sure I have heard they are one of the more aggressive tropheus and need to be kept in large colonies to be successful, pemba are another awesome one I am hoping to get some at some stage.
  17. lol yeah couldn't help the angle thing You will also find with the fluoro at the back like that apart from it blinding you and annoying you every time you look in the tank the fish will start to line themselves up with it and swim on a funny angle especially angel fish
  18. Nice stand it will be a good compact setup What size tanks are you planning? There are plenty of Angles for you to breed from there already
  19. lol Well I think its wicked, but I don't really like oscars I imagine some would come into the country (if oscars are not all locally bred these days) at some stage? Each to their own I guess..
  20. Heaps of info using the search feature search.php?keywords=dropsy&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search 1. Sometimes you can cure the fish, well you can make it look better but it usually doesn't fully recover or last long due to internal damage. 2. There is heaps of info in that link, epsoms salt and antibiotics and lots of water changes. 3. Some say it is so seperate your fish. 4. I don't feed bloodworms at all to my fish due to reserach I have done linking them to lots of problems with fish (and people) so have decided it isn't worth the risk.. Plenty of others do and will always feed them it is all about choice
  21. Yeah the disease is the main concern not the actual fish getting out and living.. Although from memory they did portray them as extremely aggressive fighting fish etc etc etc..
  22. lol you should go there on the way up and drop off these fish
  23. lol you signed off saying what do you NEED.. Some would argue that you don't need anything and your fish will adjust as they are so far removed from nature it doesn't matter but we won't go down that road There are plenty of articles here that are pretty detailed and long winded.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/c ... y_list.php This is a very good one http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/w ... mistry.php I just have some coral sand or limestone in each tank and that seems to keep the ph stable, my water is pretty hard from the tap so I am fairly lucky. I think as long as you add something to buffer your water you should be fine.
  24. Gutted guys I am sorry to hear that there is nothing worse than putting fish in the wrong tank and them getting eaten It is murphys law that the fish you least want to get eaten will get eaten.. I know what your husband feels, the first batch of african babies I ever bred got eaten when a giraffe jumped into the breeding trap I had in the tank, from that day on my wife wasn't happy until the mean fish got sold lol. At least it is very likely the market will be flooded with fronts soon and you should be able to get some more cheaply.
