If you are going to modify it, make sure you add some emergency holes somewhere near the top so if your normal holes do clog then your hood wont overflow onto your floor..

Awesome good work They are one fish it took me a long time to breed and even now they seem to stop for very long periods.. Starting again when it suits them..

As Barrie said there isn't really a cheap way of taking the scratches out, best bet would be to replace the front piece of glass with a new one or retire that tank for a breeding one and buy a new one

As Phoenix has said it depends if the deformed fins were caused by a genetic thing (which will be passed on) or the environment the fish was kept in or and damage that might have occurred when the fish was young.. Personally I wouldn't breed from it as I would say it is likely to be a genetic thing and I believe there are already so many rubbish fish out there in NZ that if you are going to the effort of breeding something (especially something as easy to find as an angel) then you might as well breed the best you can. It is one of those ethics of breeding things at the end of the day it doesn't really matter and you wont make any difference as there will always be others who will breed anything and sell it regardless of quality, and an angel with a bent fin can still live a healthy and happy life As for breeding them to see what happens, it is possible that you will get all the babies being normal (not bent fins) but they may all be carriers of the bent fin gene and when they are grown up and bred together all or most of their babies may have bent fins.. Also the bent fins may only show at a large size, so it depends if you have the time/tank space to grow them out fully and breed them together to see if it is passed on What would you do with the babies if they did all come out with bent fins?

Check on trademe and check your local building recyclers or even just hunt around, you should get a double 4ft probably with tubes for $20-30, most of mine were free, one I found in a skip when I was dumping rubbish others were just lying around and I was at the right place at the right time to take them off peoples hands..

ok i wanna know how much your power bill is before winter
ryanjury replied to aaron11's topic in Beginners Corner
Yeah its reasonable I am only using 9 heaters for those 18 tanks though as most are in insulated fishroom or have overflows etc so that keeps cost down plus we are with a pretty cheap company, either way it still hurts lol -

Ours are around $370 a month atm that is running 18tanks, 2 oil heaters constantly and a heatpump on pretty much all day plus we get a 20% prompt payment discount which helps -
Hi and welcome, good to see more locals we have a bunch of us around here already, if your ever calling through bulls send me a pm and call through and say hi I have a few tanks setup here.. As for a club try here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39222 we are just starting out with a few casual meetings and go from there, last (and first one) had 11 people with quite a few apologies so should be good.. Finding second hand setups is hard just keep an eye on trademe for bargains, although I find some on there that want stupid money for stuff.. Anyway welcome and good luck

Your fish will get as fussy as you let them, my fish eat everything because they pretty much have no other option I won't go out and buy special food if they're going to be fussy trust me they start eating How many guppies in a 54L tank? My tank with my blue tuxedos in it has 5 adults (4f 1m) and regularly has upto 40-50 fry in it.. I sell them off when they get to 2cm long and do regular large water changes and have had no problems with overcrowding etc. Filter is only a small bubble filter too.

You should be able to find free grindal/whiteworm/micro starters from a fish keeper around you To me it is one of the things that we as fish keepers should just give away, it always seems that I kill one of my cultures off and need to rely on others to get them going again so the more people that have them the better..

You would need to look it up as I can't remember the exact amount but a cf1200 with media in it is only turning over around 1000LPH (think it was like 950) I guess that would depend on the media how clogged it is, type of hosing if it had any kinks etc.. If you want your tank is be clear try running some very fine media (filter wool) I think you can get "polishing pads" from your petshop, it will pick up the finer stuff but will also clog alot faster meaning you need to clean out your filter more often.

Have you tried running a dehumidifier? Or setting your heatpump to dehumidify if it has that setting?
-
lol yeah I saw that too I thought poor fish only being in a 4fter, they really need a tank that is like 7-8ft long and 3+ft wide to be happy.
-
I think it would be wrong to have put all that effort into it and have it looking so good and not stick it in your tank

Good luck getting a discus to eat peas especially if it is already bloated and off its food I think I read somewhere that it could be tapeworm? Could also be a blockage, does it have any other symptoms? viewtopic.php?f=25&t=38420

lol so they will its been a long day..

-They don't recommend the background as its a breeding ground for bad bacteria. -I will probably end up cooking my heaters in behind it. -There wont be enough water current in there the way ive got the spray bar. -and ill never be able to keep fish in the tank if i use concrete. -Bacteria may breed in the background but if there is water flow past it it should be good bacteria, it may be a place where waste may accumulate and might be hard to get at but shouldn't cause problems. -Heaters should be fine as long as there is enough room around them and water flow past them if you are worried about this I think the new fluvals have an auto cut off if they get too hot? -I can't quite see how the spray bar is working, are you running it into that long chamber and then out a hole in the rockwork? It should work, I probably would have ran it behind the rockwork and used irrigation tubing to run small jets through the wall and straight into the tank if that makes any sense.. -I have seen a few diy threads on the net where people use concrete but also plenty saying it is a problem, goldfish live in concrete ponds and are fine? I think it just raises the ph? lol if we all believed LFS advice we would have all sorts of problems
-
lol I was thinking how did he only have 10 mins spare and go into his LFS walk out with a fish and still get to his appointment on time..

That is a shame tinytawny has this person tried posting again? I think the major problem with condescending replies is some people can't seem to take advice especially if it is bad news to them.

Good score they're wicked fish Here are some pics of mine, male is only around 2" females around 1.5", the males have been coloured since around 1" and the females just started breeding so they mature very young. lol photos are pretty bad but its what you get when you nip out there with a 20mth old running around the fishroom trying to help too They are quite dominant in the tank despite being one of the smaller fish but I haven't seen them cause any trouble. When I lived in Auckland I kept 2 males in a display tank and they got along alright with everyone else (but hated each other).

Alot of my breeding tanks have no gravel, have noticed that fry grown out in bare bottom tanks grow faster, maybe they can find the food easier maybe because you can easily remove more waste maybe a combination of both.. It is really only there for aesthetics and for growing plants in, there are options for very easy care plants that grow without gravel java fern, java moss, anubais, duck weed and indian fern (looks quite cool floating with roots dangling down) to name a few from my non planty mind.. I have the java fern and java moss in tanks without lighting and they seem to do very well so that's a bigger bonus. If your fish freak out when stuck in a bare bottom tank paint the bottom black it is something I was told recently and it really seems to help the fish settle.

Tank Setup Log. Conversion from S.American To African

The tank should be fine for stocking The dems will thin themselves out as they go, if any males start getting smashed so much they are lying on the their sides and floating at the top of the tank remove them nurse them back to health and rehome them for display tanks.. If you want any unrelated lionheads let me know I have a few here looks like around the same size as yours. -
If it comes down to it just use the power for your cig lighter that is accessory..

Can leave a bit of stuff floating around but smaller fish or filters usually take care of that, if you work on your mixes and all that stuff you can cut the mess down with how you make it..
