  1. Did you not get the emails Mel? 11am in Wanganui last sunday of the month, finishing at Simons place for a BBQ.. Unsure what house it is starting at this stage.
  2. They are not pair forming but their will be certain attributes that the female is "looking" for in order to breed with a male.. If you removed the dominant (breeding) male for a long enough period then odds are the female would eventually breed with the other but they may also never get along..
  3. lol yeah I don't know if you would find anyone else with a tank bigger than 3m to sell them to

    New Start

Aviverm contains levamisole and that is all.. There is another product that contains both prazi and levamisole I have already forgotten the name of it but it worked out alot more expensive than just buying the droncit tablets..
  5. I use something similar for my fish but it is for salmon, there are so many different versions of these trout pellets it is difficult to find out if they are any good or not. If your fish eat them then I guess they will be good for something different. The disadvantages of the ones I use are. (I cannot guarantee these ones will be the same) They smell really fishy and make the fishroom stink and any tanks start to smell after a while. They are very messy in the tank with heavy feeding they can turn the water brown, over feeding they foul the tank very fast. Some fish take a while to get used to eating them as most are used to eating flake from day dot. Overall they are a good food but have their associated risks as with everything when you try and save some $$'s.
  6. Oh no! Gutted, please pass on my condolences to Grant and I hope he is ok..

    Solar Power

You could probably use a combination of wind/solar with large storage batteries but I think the cost would be very high and would take many years to pay off in the reduced power bills.
  8. lol Does Anna know she has been entered?
  9. All I can say is the are 100 times better than any photo I can take.. Having a fishroom lit with fluoros and slightly scratched tanks and a cheap camera doesn't help Noone else is playing the guess game so ill try.. no. 1 I think is your chilumba male no. 2 fryeri male no. 3 sajica male no. 4 jacobs male no. 5 EBJD no. 6 rear end of lithobates no. 7 maleri gold male no. 8 polystig male (have you bred these?) no. 9 lithobates male (very nice big blaze on him too)
  10. My guess is no 3 is a sajica or t bar cichlid..
  11. Not my thing But those photos of the fully coloured up female are awesome, they almost look unnaturally red they are so bright! Looks like you had a good score from a good exporter with those ones
  12. lol we should play the naming game
  13. I am unsure how much it does die off over time it would be interesting to see some facts on that.. I have had filters turned off for 4 days (unplugged) noticed the tank was getting manky did a 50% water change and things kept on trucking so there was obviously still alot of bacteria alive. I have also had tanks down for 2 days when moving from Auckland to bulls just chucked canisters into the back of the car and set them up at this end with no problems. From this I would suggest the die off is very minimal over short periods of time but I cannot prove it of course. As for changing the media around it is the best way to start off a new tank, I took some filter wool to the first person I brought fish off and exchanged it for some of their stuff out of their filters and have kept it going from there. I usually only take a small amount also, just enough to contain some bacteria to start things off.
  14. Awesome pics and nice fish too Have you bred your polystigs?
  15. Really need to know the time frame and what you have to do for this project.. Somethings you can do is train oscars to do things, jump for food navigate through obstacle courses etc.. Or you could do something like how much temperature affects growth of fish, breed say 50 guppy fry and try them at various temps in different tanks, or try the same temps but different foods even some cheap ones off trademe and some top of the line ones or special "growth formulas" or brineshrimp etc..

    new babies

Cool good work They must be exceptionally fast growing fish to go from eggs to being released in 2 weeks!
  17. Yeah thats what I was talking about Zev it seems to work ok for me, mind you I am not very good with a camera and just use a cheap point and shoot..
  18. Have you measured the tap water? I have had excessive phosphates in tanks before and it was from the food I was feeding..
  19. Yeah that review has been copied and pasted all around the place.. There is also a (very old) review done by blueandkim on here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11976&hilit=fx5&start=15 It really comes down to what you want to put on your tank, some people are driven by certain brands and paying more for them because they believe they are more reliable or better, some may or may not be and we all have our biases and also a certain amount of $$'s to spend
  20. Yeah I have heard that the eheim is better, but is it worth twice as much? I would rather have 2 FX5s..
  21. What version of photoshop do you have? I am in the same boat as you and haven't sat down and spent hours figuring out how to use it but I found that CS3 had a nice "auto correct" or auto enhance somewhere in one of the menus on the top that worked quite well..
  22. Awesome! Good work, I will have to come over and see them..
  23. It is good for the fish and perfectly fine for them to eat I add it to my frozen food to add to the flavor.. It isn't any good for worming or the immune system boost unless it is freshly crushed and fed out if it is left to sit or frozen or refrigerated then it looses its goodness.
  24. I have a pair in a 170L 4ft at the moment, they are pretty small and it is just a temporary fish sitting home for them while their owners were away I certainly wouldn't recommend putting them in anything smaller, unless you were planning (and able to) upgrade to a bigger tank of course.
  25. Have you used Fenbendazole on fish? I had heard it was pretty nasty and caused sterilization etc..
