  1. Looks good. Any chance of a fish getting stuck in the outlet pipe and the tank overflowing?
  2. I don't know much about this particular product, but I built one years ago and did a lot of reading at the time. There are some very important factors in their operation, such as: depth of water to penetrate (only effective on shallow depth of water) Clarity of water (cannot penetrate water with turbidity) They have an effective operating temperature. Has to have sufficient contact time to be effective The bulbs need to be frequently cleaned or UV is blocked off. Must be shielded from eyes (damaging to eyesite) People sometimes forget that there are billions of different microorganisms out there and 99.99999% are harmless or good. We would not do well in a sterile environment and neither will fish.
  3. When I was breeding angels we used to call the problem " belly sliders" and is caused by the temperature being too low. Keep the parents away and the fry cannot get eaten and raise the temperature. Feed microworm and brine shrimp as soon as the fry start swarming. I had best luck with bare tanks, airation and frequent water changes. Siphon excess food off the bottom each day and use a pilot light at night to keep them feeding continuously. Baby cories do well raised in the same tank and help to clean up.
  4. Christchurch water supply is not chlorinated
  5. I find the best way to check for white spot or velvet is to look at the fish with a torch in the dark,it shows up better. If one fish has it you will need to treat them all.
  6. I wouldn't use them in the same room I was in. It can't be good for fish or humans breathing that stuff all day and night.
  7. They are more nutritious when newly hatched as they still have a yolk sack they are feeding on so the fish eating them get that as a bonus.
  8. The males do develop better finnage if kept seperate but able to show to each other. I used to keep them in a set up I made which was like a tank within a tank. Inner tank was divided into squares 50mm x 50mm with stainless steel mesh on the bottom and it sat inside another tank 24" x 24". To do a water change you just lifted it up and let it go. Straps on the top kept it suspended. Each fish was surrounded by other males and spent all day showing. No pics---sold it.
  9. It is a living organism. If it is not present it cannot grow.
  10. The bulldogs of tropical fish---look like they swam too fast into the side of the tank.
  11. What do people use as a media to culture microworm?
  12. I purpose built a fish house and and got 2" x 1" box section stands built and hot dip galvenized. I made the tanks 24"wide and of various depths. Had 40 -- 50 tanks depending on what I was doing. Heated the room with a fan/heater wired so the fan goes all the time. A light over each tank and a 12volt pilot light also that could be left on at night to keep fry feeding around the clock. The important thing with the stands is to remember there is a lot of weight and distribute it well, or the legs will punch through the floor.
  13. comets are usually hardier than other fancy goldfish like orandas
  14. If you don't know what you are doing it may only be once. You can wire them remotely, I have done it so the electrics are remote and only the tubes and connecters are in the lid,but the length needed is about the same as installing a complete fitting
  15. Usually you can clean right back to the glass with a razor blade or knife. A wipe with meths will clean it and get rid if any moisture, then reseal with RTV. Your tank should be waterproof if the glass is cut right and it is glued properly but it is normal to run a fine bead and smooth it with your finger. Cut the nozel so you get a fine bead and it will come out looking tidy. Have a scrap of paper handy to wipe the excess off your finger when necessary. Good luck.
  16. I think a two foot light is slightly longer than two foot so you may need to make the lid bigger or the light smaller.
  17. I have two tanks set up primarily for plant. They have sand substrate and are heavily planted with established plants. Each has a small electrical sponge filter which gets cleaned about every 4 months. I have lots of fish and excess mulm gets removed about every 3 months. The plants help with the nitrogen cycle and the filters do also, but in addition they circulate the water to avoid the temperature layering that occurs without it. One tank is completely enclosed in a cabinet so has a small airator, the other does not.
  18. Your filter is an organic filter and only works properly when half full of gunk. Only clean it when the flow is restricted.
  19. White cloud mountain minows would be OK on there own but would get eaten if there were goldfish as well.
  20. I think it is ilegal to remove sand from the beach like most things that are fun.
  21. I use a salt paste, rinse well and allow the tank to dry out completely for a while.
  22. What's wrong with water from the third artesian strata (we aaaaar on the correct side of the Bombay hills)
  23. In my experience white sand goes green (promotes algae growth)
  24. I found they grow a lot quicker with good food and lots of water changes. The males develop better fins if seperated as soon as identifyable and kept so they show to other males all the time. I had a "tank within a tank" which was divided into squares 50mm x 50mm with s/s mesh on the bottom sitting in another tank so to do a water change you just lifted the whole thing and let it down again.
  25. It is caused by kidney problems that cause fluid retention. You can treat with salt and or epsom salts but it only reduces the fluid a bit and doesn't get to the original problem which can be many and varied. I had 2 males and one female and both males died within a day of each other and they were in different tanks. The female is still healthy as. PERISHABLE GOODS.
