  1. Sounds like a female full of eggs.
  2. Ammonia can be converted to ammonium or in the free ammonia state it can be driven off with aeration like chlorine. It is about concentrations and balance. I find most tanks turn acid as time goes on. There is a lot of chemistry going on in a fish tank and the reactions are all inter related and not straight foreward.
  3. Ammonia is a pretty soluble gas that reacts with water to form ammonium hydroxide.
  4. They normally stock the growlux type tubes as that is what is often used to grow the switched on herbs. They will be cheaper if you can find out where they are buying them from.
  5. The temptation is always to give them a bit extra in the way of food before you leave. Don't be tempted this is what kills them because the uneaten food will cause a bacterial bloom. Just feed them normally they will be fine for a few days.
  6. It is a common problem in dwarfs.
  7. 150mm fittings would be megagucks but short lenths of pipe would be cheaper as they are different plastics.
  8. If the scales are protruding it will be dropsy which is water retention caused by kidney problems. It can have a number of causes but is basically incurable.
  9. Chloramphenicol is a very broad spectrum antibiotic that used to be used widely in the fish trade. When I imported goldfish I tried to get some from my vet. The answer was an emphatic NO. It is the antibiotic treatment of choice in the conrol of cholera and as such its use is extremely restricted so I cant see it being readily spread around the wild to treat frogs anytime soon.
  10. The importers either bring them in as pairs (and they are sold as pairs because the females have as much colour as a female guppy and they would never sell otherwise) or males only. These are all males. Get a better pet shop. They are very easy to sex if you see a pair (you don't even need to look at the dorsal fins). These are the blue variety which is hardier and imported most often because of that.
  11. They lay eggs in the water and you store them out of the water, but they need to be kept at the right temperature and a shelf on a turtle tank is not likely to do that.
  12. A replica heron would be the same as a replica duck in the shooting season. Coelacanth is on to it. Put a hollow log up in the tree for a nest, sell your expensive goldfish and restock with el cheepo kingfisher tucka---sit back and enjoy. Many moons ago I was walking along the riverbank and heard scuffling and cheeping from a hollow branch and figured it was a nest. Curious to see what a baby looked like I put my hand in and Mother was there and very unimpressed. They have very strong and sharp beaks---my hand was not in there long.
  13. Cardinals and rummy nose are good as they originate from the same place. They are all expensive but live a bit longer than some (provided you don't kill them)
  14. The black fittings are not plumbing fittings---they are for polyethylene (alkathene). Plumbing fittings don't come in black that I know of.
  15. I wouldn't put killies with discus as their prefered temperatures are so different.
  16. Try "in I guess" They live in ponds that dry up and the eggs stay in the mud, then hatch when the rains come again.
  17. Your threads may be different to here. On my fawcet I unscrew a filter from the end and screw the fitting on. It is a fine thread and not a standard plumbing thread. I got an adapter from a place that sold water filters that go on the tap.
  18. They will get any sized fish they can fly with. They need a perch where they can sit and watch the pond then dive and get lunch. No perch---no dive. Herons will wade in and take the lot.
  19. The active ingredient in the dechlorinator is sodium thisulphate which is not terribly toxic. Add it slowly to the tank as you fill it and stir well. Only add enough to treat the added water.
  20. I have posted this before but here we go again. All water contains organics (mainly amines from proteins) that react with chlorine to form chloramines. All chlorinated water supplies contain chloramines A search through Mrs Google (God's Mother in Law) will give you information on the manufacture of monochloramines by the reaction of chlorine and ammonia. This is used in some countries (mainly the US) to disinfect drinking water rather than chlorine If there is chlorine in the water there will also be chloramines.
  21. About 3 weeks late the killies were all dead so wont be using that again.
  22. Shops selling hydroponic equipment (mary jane's friend) normally stock growlux as well. There are a number of brands similar to growlux with different names but similar prices. Everyone to their own but I find a growlux and a soft white works better than straight growlux. Others prefer daylight (6500K) but I doubt that 10000K will do the job.
  23. Is N. guentheri still around ---I used to breed hundreds of them.
  24. Most people use watts because that information is more readily available than lumens which realy requires a meter which most don't have. What you say is true of course.
  25. You have the wrong K ratings for plant and it is too tall for small bottom plants. Large plants like E uraguayensis would be OK because they could get light from the top. You will have a struggle to grow plants near the bottom.
