  1. Yup, it just arrived today. I have a bigger pump that I could stick on - I have a 3500lph, the one on there is 2000lph. Hmmm, I spose I could see if it could handle the flow, any negatives to this idea?
  2. Hey guys trying to sort out my sump plumbing and thought I'd try a diagram. This way I was thinking I can independantly control the flow to both the skimmer and the fuge, and have a back up one into the return section incase there is too much flow, or I want to stop flow in a section for some reason or another. I just realised a ball valve after the durso will be required too. My skimmer (that just arrived thx Brian ) is this beast - Can I use this as I have in the diagram? Anyone have any suggestions? Only thing is now I have to make another sump as my old one isnt big enough - this time I'm gonna go way bigger - I want as much room for crabs ect in the fuge (and a pet cray) , along with room for my new skimmer.
  3. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh ... xhome.html I was never a believer in the 3 second memory thing - what good is a memory if if lasts that long?
  4. I was just worried that I might have to use heaps of artificial salt if I used my Weipro 8) , but as you say it appears to be a non issue. Do most people here run wet? I think I'm gonna run quite wet - it worked for my sump I have seen some people on foreign forums with ridiculously thick stuff, and the logic behind that doesnt make too much sense if the only problem with running wet - is loosing more water. Does skimming pull out ions at different rates? or does it leave the ion balance totally intact? I'm surprised that there is very little qualitative data available about skimmers - I would have thought that with the money involved someone would have looked into a serious scientific comparison. I spose the different running specs would make it difficult though......
  5. I was reading an "oldskool" reefing book, and there was a tank with quite a nice selection of various green algaes, I thought it actually looked pretty cool, the rest of the tank was pretty crap though. Are there any "macro algae" based "reef tanks" floating around out there, like that "shrine to coraline" thing?
  6. When you run with this skimmate - can you detect a drop in salinity? (because that is one of the arguments against wet skimming), just wondering if you have noticed?
  7. I had a search for permanganate on RC, didn't find anything appart from this: I know from chemistry that its pretty nuts stuff - if it were an easy fix to algae I'm sure there would be a thread on RC. It does seem to be used in freshie tanks, but since everyone here is very careful about correct levals of Calcium, Phospherous ect, adding manganeese ions might screw something up? this is for a pond, which can obviously handle harsher treatment than a reef tank. After adding you are supposed to do a 50% water change. The more I read it sounds like its a no-go. Apparantly it will kill all your bacterial population too, so dont put it in!!! well, at least until one of "those in the know" says it ok. 8) btw : Had a fun experience with this stuff - on Blossom Parade day in Hastings my friends and I (unofficially) made the huge fountain in the town centre go a lovely pink colour , it was quite a hit with the crowd.
  8. Is this the consistancy you are aiming for or is it still warming up? I set my weipro up and got a similar colour skimmate(probably a little lighter) - first time I fired it up and left it for ~ 3 hours got about half a cup of skimmate. I was impressed - made the water quite clear, (probably about 30L in the system it was running in). I couldnt see 20 cms in it to start with, then perfect. Brian did my payment go through ? So what are your thoughts on your new toys so far? Any problems or are they as good as they look? 8) (I ask because I'm quite interested in one of those skimmers myself.)

You can grow them from eggs, although thats pretty hard out. I would probably ask a fisherman, problem is is they are caught in a net they are probably screwed. The one in the photo was caught in a net, but had its 2 tenticles ripped off, and they cant eat with only their arms, so it died. You need a massive circular tank and perfect water quality, its not for everyone

I like the idea of squids because they are so hard to look after that noone has ever really had a "pet" squid before. How much to big circular tanks cost? Thats the first hurdle to get over
  11. Theres an aquarium type thing called Southern Encounter, havent been there though so couldnt say if its any good, and I think its freshie only. Arana Park is cool , not exaclty fish related though.
  12. Very nice!!! , makes me wanna jump on the reefer band wagon. As a random question do those xenia things open and close all the time? As I have only seen still pics I'm not sure.

http://www.thesciencesite.info/squidcam.shtml , the "click to view now!" thing. Its pretty cool, the squid has grown heaps since it hatched. He's very easy to see. It's a pretty fancy webcam. , sometimes it has trouble focusing because of the circular tank. Man a pet squid would be cool....
  14. Hey nickle pickle, I have a Weipro sa 2014 (i think?) that I'm thinking of possibly selling. I have used it for about 4 hours - and then I got a good deal on a larger skimmer. It cleaned up the water up really well from what I saw of it, it actually skimmed without breaking in which was a surprise.
  15. hey PJ, a good cold water tank showing what can be kept - http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~kuansl/ , originally found by Brianemone, I was just looking through old fnzas posts. That nudibranch is quite cool.... I might go to Kaikoura to get some livestock when I go back home- some pretty awesome rock pools there, like this guy. Does anyone know how well an anemone like this can be put in a tropical tank? - or is it a slow but unavoidable death? And also PeneJane, there is a huge biodiversity between Invers and Stewart island - my marine bio lecturer was raving about it - it has only just been "discovered", and apparantly it has as much life as some coral reefs - noone really knows why.
  16. Check out www.deepblueaquarium.co.nz , they are pretty cheap aswell. Their price for the weirpro is about the same - but it comes with a 3500lph pump!
  17. In this case RC has blocked the link. The image is typed up just as the second one, but the RC server decided it was a no go. See what happens when you click on the link to the picture I posted - it redirects you to the rc logo.
  18. There were two pics originally - but then after about 5 mins - it changed to that fish picture.
  19. http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500 ... Small_.jpg is the link to the original.
  20. Chim do you know how to stop that happening? I dont see how it could be there one moment gone the next?
  21. Do you mean as in "that IS two dirrerent pics"? Or as in "wow that looks like two different pics"? They are the same photo, you can tell by the position of the fish in the bottom left corner. . I was pretty impressed at how well a "bad" photo could be saved.
  22. Check out this before and after photoshopping! or here: http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500 ... Small_.jpg and..........
  23. Didnt want to stark a new thread - and this kinda seemed where to put it, we go off topic enough anyways. Some amazing photos of mushroom corals - I have just been looking through "reefy" stuff as its pretty interesting. 8) Warning you might need a fast connection to see these pics. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthrea ... genumber=1 Some fantastic shots!!!
  24. Hey awesome! Cheers both of you.
