  1. Well, found this on reef central. Some quite hard questions, I have absolutely no idea on quite a few. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-01/rhf/index.php Give it a jam and see how you do!!! (no using the net while you do it either) 8) Haha, Im quite happy with that, got a long way to go though.
  2. Just stumbled accross this article. Damn small fish. http://www.2loop.com/articles/smallfish.html
  3. Do you guys get charged for water? I thought you had to use heaps of water before there were any additional charges.
  4. Can a 34L house that many fish happily? (I wouldnt know just asking)
  5. Haha, I just had a laugh about that bid from himself, how stupid can you be? Honestly... some people. And now the bid has been mysteriously removed.
  6. I thought it was to prevent detrius buildup. I think the idea is that when the rock sheds you want to be able to remove it instead of having it gunk up in the sand. Not too sure though.
  7. I think it would be good to ask the consumers institute about the fish / power off problem, see what they have to say about it.

    Overflow!

When I was young, my parents had a tropical tank. A neon tetra had jumped out, and while I was looking for him I squished him under my big toe. I was a bit shocked ( I was about 7 at the time) so I chucked him back(he was buggered, but was still "alive"), only to watch him be devoured by the other fish.
  9. Could these live happily in a tropical aquarium? Ie without eating the fish or being eaten themselves?
  10. Do you know how many lights you would need to accent it? I suppose you could get really blue bulbs, to suppliment.
  11. Electricity is a killer, (well to me at least) I do like the idea of the use of skylights as someone else suggested a while back. I would have thought in an inwall setup, perhaps it could be hidden well? Have you considered the skylight thing?
  12. I'll be back in Chch on friday, I might go take a look, and possibly bring a camera.
  13. Chimera for aquascaping have you considered making your own base rock? From my small experience with diy rock, it would be perfect for tayloring an aquascape. I was thinking it would be good for building a base structure, perhaps raised off the ground so that detrius could be blown out. Then just stick real live rock over it. I had another idea that I would like to try on my reef tank (the one thats many years away) , I loved the look of crackers cube. I was thinking of having the bottom of the tank below the viewing area, maybe by 50cm, perhaps more. This would allow a BB, and you wouldnt have to worry about plumbing/pumps ect being seen(so you can blow the crud away) , and I think rock dissappearing into the bottom would look real cool. Kinda like a spire coming out of the gloom. Perhaps the walls below the line could be painted or something, whilst incorporated into the stand. (Forgive my crappy drawing ) I dont know how practical it would be though. Oh, and go easy on me 8)
  14. I think its a good idea. I havent ever tried making a website before, when my tank is up and running I would like to give it a shot.
  15. I dont suppose the place you can get farmed crays has packhorses?
  16. A note on the reccommend tank size, 20L seems very small, I wouldnt put too much stock in that (i havent ever kept them but that sounds a tiny tank) I think a packhorse cray would be cool.
  17. I think the vodka method isnt really too strict on the quantity of vodka you put in - slappers, I was under the impression that you start with 1ml per day, then take it up slowly to 5mls per day. Somewhere there is a thread possibly by Wasp? that goes into more detail. Ill try and find it. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt9464.html?start=0 , Slappers its in your thread
  18. Check out this thread http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt6838.html?start=0
  19. By my quick calculations those yellow tangs are about $23 NZ.
  20. Well, I don't really know too much about vodka, I think some cheap stuff may have sugar, but it should just be ethanol and water (40% ethanol is normal vodka eg Absolute) And the max you can buy ethanol is 96% or thereabouts?. So just adjust it by multiplying it by 0.416666 if you have the 96% stuff.
  21. Yeah, I'm a student at Canterbury, going back on Friday. My parents just moved to Hastings - but hopefully will be moving the house back to Havelock. Havelock North is a really nice place, (especially compared to where I live in Chch ) Cant say I'd like to be buying property in HN, ridiculous prices everywhere. , luckily we were just able to buy a section before the boom.
  22. Wow thats stuffs crazy. Do these all die or what? That massive tank is really cool.
  23. So whats the deal with buying ethanol? I went to Clarkes Chemicals and they said I wasnt allowed to buy it from them, they mentioned something about fisheries, cant remember exactly. Struck me as rather silly beaucracy - I distill my own, its just that this is cheaper, - they have no problems selling 50kg of potassium nitrate to high school kids. What a wonderfull world. Anything on their chemical list anyone can buy - but not ethanol. Where have you guys tried? If you say its for filtration in a reef tank is that a good enough reason? Personally I want to make drinks out of it, homemade Midori is fantastic.
  24. Hey wow another person from H N. 8)
