    Loaches

I've got a skunk with some dwarf chains and they seem pretty happy...
  2. Cool - good to hear they are still aliving and kicking (so to speak)! They are awesome fish, very vivid blue and I love their fin shapes too, nice and rounded!
  3. Afrikan should still have some - if they haven't killed each other yet - they are the MOST nasty wee fish I have EVER seen!!
  4. Its not very ground breaking I know, but google pictures is the best way to find pictures of most things I've found! You can also find out things scientific names that way, which you can then look up on cichid-forum.com
  5. Wow! Thats early isn't it??!! Pretty cool though! Do you think they are fertile? Thanks for the pics
  6. Hey fellow front lovers How are everyones going??? Any new pics?! Any interesting goss??! Mine become more and more cool by the day! - They are all so inquisitive and even seem to like watching tv if nothing else of interest is happening in the lounge! Here is a pic I just took with my phone so its not the best photo but you can see my alpha pretty well
  7. Hello Its time again! Meeting this thursday, 7.30pm, at the IHC Centre, 30 Goodshed Rd, Upper Hutt. See you there!
  8. Hi We usually go till about 9.30, we often have a talk from someone to do with the hobby (This month Darren is giving one as I said) then we have a chat about what everyone is up to fish wise and who is breeding what and if anyone has any questions or problems they want to discuss. Often people will bring things along to sell/trade such as extra fish food/equipment or fish they have bred. Then we finish up with tea and coffee and a chit chat. Would be great to see you there
  9. Sweet thanks Chaz have a good one and see you soon btw - can you put up a pic of your new tank set up??!
  10. Hi folks Its that time of the month again, we're meeting this Thursday, 7.30pm, at the IHC Centre, 30 Goodshed Rd, Upper Hutt. This month we will have a talk by our resident Marine Biologist, Darren, on plecs and the meaning on scientific names of fish. See you there!
  11. it keeps the pH up! but thats all its just like having a HEAP of limestone in your tank!
  12. yeah - I had to hollow out tonnes of mine and pour in concrete to get it to sink!
  13. I sell it at work to kill moss and aglae on paths - I wouldn't put it anywhere near my fish!!!

I'm not so hot on the goldfish! But your danio's will get to about 2 inches

    feeding

Yeah sounds like the danio's are more than happy with the cooler water - and with a filter like that you can feed once a day for sure, I'd go for a 3' tank myself (pretty standard size), and get a few more danio's cause they are happier in a group

true true! But I'm pretty sure zebra's can be kept in a tank without a heater inside - as long as the house isn't too cold - like ruby barbs... correct me if I'm wrong though!

    feeding

You might find reading this useful another thread about this has just been going: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/feeding-vt22573.html What sort of filtration have you got? (if any?!) cause the more filtration you have the better cause any excess food won't mess up the water so much... If you don't have a filter I would stick to every other day to be safe
  18. The shop would have told you that though cause lots of people over-feed their fish when they are new to the hobby - I think everyone has done it! That’s why its safer to feed a bit less if you are unsure how much to give or if your filtration isn't very strong... But to add my 5c (or 10c I guess now!) I feed my fronts twice a day, community tank once a day and my bichir every 2 days
  19. Here are some pics of mine - te first two were a shile ago as you can see from the size of my fronts! My tank is an L shape which is why, even though I was going to do a background like weka's I ended up making two 'piles' of rock, same way as weka I guess but I plastered on pretty thick concrete... As you can see from the 2nd and 3rd picks, the algae makes it look nice and natural after abit
  20. I collect my own river sand - that way I can find sand that isn't too fine, which means it easy to vac - but also looks good and the fish can play with it (my fronts are always sifting trough it looking for food!). Its really easy to collect - in any river with a sand bar, the sand is naturally sorted into different grades so there is always a good patch of the right sized grain.
  21. Awesome, looking forward to the pics!!! I used to find sunfish in ponds in Hampstead Heath in london - quite pretty fish and hardy too - I'm guessing we couldn't have them here though cause if they can live wild in london I'm guessing they can in NZ too!
  22. Hey badman I pm'd you what I did with concrete but your plan sounds pretty good! One thing I would defiantly do is a sample piece, just so you can so what effect you will end up with - solvent might end up with a very uniform pitted look as each polystyrene ball collapses - so you'll need to make sure however you treat it makes it look good - you could just try a heat gun cause I know that works pretty well
