  1. Hiya misnoma, Plants take CO2 and turn it into O2 during the day and do the opposite at night.... O2 into CO2. So yeah, there will be a big change in oxygen levels in the water between day and night. My advice, don't run the CO2 generators at night. There's a reason why yer only supposed to run them during the day.... if you can't control the day/night thing then yeah, airstones will help.

    Dwarf Cichlids

We're big fans of cockatoos as well. Congrats on the spawn and save some for us when they're ready for new homes!

    Dwarf Cichlids

My personal fave for dwarfs has now become Blue Rams. Winston (a member of KMAC, our local fish club) brought along some of his bubba blues to the monthly fish meet last Wednesday and we picked up 4 for $20ish. So far they've already made two pairs and they've got the coolest personalities I've seen on cichlids yet. Will be setting up breeding tanks for them eventually, but for now I recommend you get in touch with Winston and buy some of his juveniles while he still has some!
  4. I bribe mine to the front with a treat like courgette. Works with the GBAs and chocolate pleco (in pic) but not with the BNs in the discus tank.
  5. Keep tellin yerself that..... that's what I do!
  6. Yup, waterline is usually not visible in the tank like in the pics. Too much trouble to take new ones though Hood filter is much quieter when filled properly as well.
  7. Thanks guys, it HAS been going for ages... just in another tank Thinking of making a few adjustments to the tank, but can't bring myself to mess with it. Good enough? No suggestions for improvements?
  8. Drop some plutonium in the tank? Worked for the fish in Springfield!
  9. Paired off.... don't think so. Saw some interesting behaviour yesterday with two males? circling each other slowly showing off war colours. They're all in the quaratine tank at the moment with a bunch of smaller fish that I recently pulled from the now-discus tank. Guppies, penguin tetras, the works. Anything that was chasing each other around and keeping the discus from having peace and quiet in the tank. Now everything is in quarantine in that tank for another week. I have a spare 10G/40ltr (45cm) tank or two around here, so I can always give them a quick separate setup if need be.
  10. Excuse me? Discus aren't natural? What crack pip have you been smoking? Yes, the colours have ben enhanced by selective breeding but the body shape is the exact same as wild brown discus. Do your research before calling them unnatural. As far as guppies go... yeah, the tails are a bit outrageous but they're not far from the natural fish either. I'd use goldfish if I was trying to make a point of selective deformity. By the way, we got 4 young blue rams last night and they're COOL little buggers! Main reason why I looked at this thread.... Alan, thanks for the site, will bookmark it for future breeding!
  11. A 45x30x30cm tank is 40 ltr. If you don't have time for cutting glass at least get a tank separator. Just a plastic mesh that you use to keep the families apart. Very small fry can still go through, but you can use two meshes at the same time to prevent that or whatever's clever. Congrats and good luck!
  12. My 2 clicks - 3 days. I'm sure I'll be corrected soon if I'm wrong
  13. And it's notoriously more agressive than the average Brichardis. Seems to be confused quite often with the Brichardi, which gives them a bad name for being agressive. I have them in a tank with Discus (I know, odd place for them) and they seem to only bother each other and the B/Ns (fighting for caves). Anyways, they're in there and it'll be almost impossible to get them out without deconstructing the whole tank. Beautiful fish and as long as they stay away from the discus (which are about 20 times their size) I love em!
  14. Hey Zedd, just saw your tank setup in the other section. Is that an AR980T? Nice setup, nice and tall. Couldn't see much in the pics tho...
  15. Thanks. When things grow out a bit more the equipment that's still visible will be hidden. I was lucky to get wood that laready had Java and Xmas moss on it, and the plants were moved in big mats, so very easy to plant in. Snowman - here's a pic of some of the GBAs I got from you. They're doing great and have fun "tail wrestling" which I hear is normal behaviour.
  16. I know this should be in the Member Tank section, but this is a freshwater tank and wanted to see what people think. The tank is an AR980 and has 3 bulbs and filter in the hood, all integrated. We also have a Fluval 204 for added filtration. The Discus belonged to Suphew, who recently broke down his 4 foot Discus tank and I got a majority of the bits to set this tank up. The three Discus are from him, and he's raised them beautifully. The largest is a "Blue Turk" (looks about the size of a dinner plate), followed by a "Marlboro Red", and then a much smaller brown heckle (half the size of the larger ones). While there's a bit of dispute about the colour variations of the larger ones, they're still amazing and very graceful and we're proud parents. The plants and driftwood are all from Suphew as well... as well as the aforementioned Fluval.... so we basically just took over the whole setup and tossed it in the AR980 and it's an amazing setup. So, enough rattling on, here's the tank and specs: Full view shot of the tank and setup. Tank and stand - note the four fish lined up.... They cruise the tank like this often and it's fun to watch. Close up shot of the two large ones, but the large blue turk is returning back to normal colouration without stress bars. Close up shot of the smaller heclke and a bit of the marlboro red. So what do you think? I know, the angel has to go...
  17. Just get a bleed valve for your air tube. You'll be able to control the amount of air going into the filter and quiten it a bit. Good luck!
  18. If it's a tetra, then it'll prefer a shoal of 6 fish or more and will do well in a community tank. If it's a cichlid then it will NOT do well (like Jack Dempseys) in a comm tank. There are dwarf cichlids (Kribs and Keyholes) that do well in comm tanks tho. I advise you to go to the library and get as many books on tropical fish as you can. Do some reading and study up on what the fish are like, where they're from and what water conditions they prefer. Once you get enough resources together making the decisions are easy.
  19. Yeah, what tanksman said... Aside from that, Riccia will "regroup" to form the floating bed again. Just give it a few days to find the quiet part of the water surface to collect in. Once your Riccia has started forming the bed, gently move the bits that are getting all over the tank to that location and add it to the mat. Otherwise, your Fluval 204 comes with flexible hoses to make the inlet and outlwt as low as you want. Just move the angle benders farther along the hose and the outlet should be lower in the water and create less agitation )riciia will do what I described above once that is done correctly). As for the air bubbles, toss the air pump for a pump-based filtration system. I like the idea above of the reverse-UG system.
  20. It's fairly common to have your fish breed pretty fast when given proper conditions. As a matter of fact, if you have opposite sexes and certain conditions it's hard to make fish NOT breed. I'd try and look into the cave nad see if you can see anything going on. If you see them being territorial then you might have breeding as well. Aside from that, are you doing regular partial water changes? There's more to freshwater than just pH.
  21. I'd make a brackish tank with Monos, bumblebee gobys and a few other salty friends.
  22. So... 12 days later. How are things going? Look forward to an update
  23. I have a massive Yo-Yo that came with my tank (5") and two small ones (yoyos as well) I got to keep him.... company. He's pretty much nocturnal and hangs out in a hiding place all day and comes out at night and once in a while during feeding. I've gotten rid of the agressive Golden Algae Eater that was "playing" a bit rough with the other fish, and his playmate the Golden Rainbow Shark will be leaving tomorrow. This is mostly to have a pleasant environ for Discus that we may be getting tomorrow, but hopefully the larger Yo-Yo will be more active now as well. As for snails... never had any. Will get them eventually though, so I hope the loaches do their job and stop eating all the bottom feeder food!
  24. Yup, daffodils they are. Very similar to Brichardis. Chris told me about the wicked price when we saw a breeding pair he has in one of his many tanks and we went and got 3 of them. Caserole - same as the GBAs, we'll swap if we need to make pairs later on, ya? Good on ya getting the last 7
  25. Dunno about a pair, but more than likely with three of them. Two of them (which I consider males) have two bars on the cheek (gill cover) like in the picture above and the other one only has the one bar nearest the gills. I've been staring at fin shape and anal fins, but there's not much difference aside from the cheeks. As they're not Brichardis, there's hardly any info about them online. Anyone know a way to sex these fishies? I was just in Hutt Pets today and forgot to tell them about the incorrect fish identification. Darnit.
