  1. I've had one go live only after eating fry. I just fed him small guppies. How much do Butterfly fish cost up in Auckland? Would love to get some, but they're about $50 here in WGTN (as far as I've seen).
  2. Main thing is to create some water surface movement by angling the powerhead or filter output. If nothing else, get a bubble stone. Then again, it could be free food!
  3. He's back.... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 428950.htm This time 9 for $210. Phils are a better deal.
  4. Wow. I'm looking forward to getting some diseases in my tank to take pictures of! Just kidding Excellent quality and clarity. I hope to get my digital camera to take pictures like that someday....

    B/N get stuck?

Wow, hope that happens to us! Glad to hear he wasn't stuck and you're a grandaddy. So are they just normal bristlenose? Would be keen to see some pics!

    Crayfish

I usually drop crays in the water when it gets to a rolling boil. They turn red and serve up nicely with garlic butter.... Just kidding, the "natural NZ ocean" tank is something that I'm quite keen on. Let us know how it goes!
  7. Thanks guys! I just had to give the congos a bit of food to get their minds off spawning (comm tank is no place to try and lay eggs) but will let the fishies go hungry for a couple days. Honestly, not a big issue if it's just planaria. They're pretty natural in a tank and not an issue unless theybecome an infestation.
  8. Today I was doing a water change and decided to vacuum the driftwood as I noticed some leftover bloodworm and tubifex worms falling over it occassionally during feeding. After I was done with the water change I noticed a few small (1/2 cm) hairlike white worms wriggling in the water which my congo tetras devoured upon sight. Parasites or leftover food that's reproducing? I've read through all my "fish disease" books and they don't really cover worms that aren't actually on the fishies....
  9. Warehouse has electronic timers with random function for $10. Don't forget to do your water changes before and after you go, and enjoy your vacation. Get a friend to look in on your house and pets

    Guppy Tails

Soz to hear it Penejane! I'd offer the gobys a home, but I'm sure you'll find someone local to take care of them. Hope yer guppies tails grow back soon!
  11. Yeah, I think the wife would be beating me severely about the head and shoulders if I was running off to get gas for the fishies gennie while we sit in the cold dark house and watch them....

    Hi from Wellington

Hey guys, can someone point the way to the chat room for us? I know y'all get on and talk some nights, just don't know where to go...
  13. For a regular fantail goldfish you want a water temp from 10 degrees and higher. If it's getting below that the fish can survive but don't expect them to be social. Remember that in many places goldfish are kept outside throughout winter without problems, but that's generally in a pond which generally keeps water warmer than a glass tank with freezing air all around. As long as the water doesn't freeze over, you should be fine.
  14. Goldfish Pagoda? What kinds of prices? I REALLY doubt they can beat the quality and prices at New Zealand Discus. They have young red turquoise for $35! And at the size they come in, they're very strong and coming straight from the breeder. I'm getting 6 from him, but only 2 red turquoise with 2 golden crystals and 2 heckles or imported pigeon bloods.
  15. beachy, i thought you bought the angelicus last week, what happened? Oh, and the pink tailed chalceus is sold. Did anyone here buy it?
  16. LOL... I think he means a very good jumper nice catch tho!
  17. http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/0004 ... 232868.htm looks like a cool fish that'd be great for a 6 foot tank!
  18. Hi Phil, I'm doing the same thing (discus in a comm. tank) and people usually recommend putting the discus in their own tank. The BNs are known to "accidentally" clean the discus, which leaves abrasions and so on. I've had discus in a comm tank before and was plagued with problems. Just keep in mind that the discus are a gentle fish that prefer to be on their own. They can defintely co-inhabit a tank with other fish though! Did you get your babies from NZ Discus? We're getting 6 from him shortly.
  19. After setting up the tank and getting some neighbourly love going, we've decided to do a Discus tank after all. Not sure what is going to be compatible or not at the moment, but it seems we may have to part with a few of the newest additions. The last thing I need is the baby discus we get from New Zealand Discus being hurt by a crowd of boisterous Congos or nipped by the ctenopoma. So, if you all have any advice, this is the time we need it. This is what we have in the tank and what we're planning on having. Possible conflicts? Let us know! 1x 15cm Leopard Ctenopoma 1x 10cm Sydontis "Network" catfish 6x 6-8cm Congo Tetras 2x 2-3cm Kribensis Planned: 6x Discus from New Zealand Discus 4x Golden Black-eyed B/N from Snowman For instance, I once saw a B/N try and "clean" a Discus, which wasn't pretty. Does this happen often? Do you think we should just chuck (sell) all our current fish and do the Discus tank? FYI, this is a 180ltr 3ft beveled tank.

    Hi from Wellington

LOL, hello to the weekend forumers! At least you had time to stop by and say hello on the weekend. Pleasure to meet you all. Alan - actually, we got two Kribensis from Ballistic, that was a great call! They's still young (we look to make sure the ctenopoma didn't eat them every time we look in) and true characters, even at 3cm long. The bigger of the two (hopefully a male and female) even takes on the Congo Tetras when they get cheeky. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After setting up the tank and getting some neighbourly love going, we've decided to do a Discus tank after all. 21. Hi guppylover! There's a few plastic shops over in Petone that can help you out with the partitions. You give them measurements and they'll make whatever you want. Sounds like a good plan on the subdividing for different breeder groups, just keep in mind that the male bettas will still try and fight even through clear plastic partitions. If you need to know exactly where to go for the plastic companies, PM Pies.
  22. We're trying to track down some Neolamprologus brichardi (Lyretal/Fairy Cichlids). Has anyone seen any around? Thanks!

    Brine shrimp

penejane, "sea monkeys" ARE brine shrimp, it's just a gimmicky name. Nothing wrong with feeding them to your guppies; and I strongly recommend the 90% hatch eggs that cees sells, if you can get any.

    Availability

We're trying to track down some Neolamprologus brichardi here in WGTN. Has anyone seen any around here? Will be checking with Hutt Pets tomorrow, but just curious. Thanks!
