slappers
when doing water changes using water from the beach would you still have to feed your corals or should they get it from the water that you just put in. or just use ASW and use supplements

beachy
So how close to high tide does it have to be when getting water?
ghostface
So how close to high tide does it have to be when getting water? best to get it bang on high tide, after a few clear days. as for feeding, i wonder if the same particles exist / organisms live in the water here compared to a tropical reef? id say it would be different, so feeding would probably be useful.. [not that i feed mine]
chimera
best to get it bang on high tide, after a few clear days i got mine an hour before tonight. water was a little chopped up, got a bit of sand settling in the bottom. i just pour the water in overtop of filter wool. it rained yesterday, but was getting desperate for a water change as im heading to whanagarei for work for 3 weeks on monday! going to do another water change tomorrow too
Duke
I have seen 2 stroke water pumps for $299 which could be great for this type of thing. I saw it in a lawn mower shop in Hamilton. Don't know about the salt water though but a good rinse would help. My new tank & sump is 900l, lots of $$$$$ with ASW so a pump would pay its self off rather quickly. The ASW I use is $129 for 750L. This type of talk sells things to my wife, her eyes roll around and she lets out a low moan (don't hear that any where else) which means OK (really means do what you want but if we end up in the poor house its my fault)
misnoma
Better not rain tomorrow, collecting tomorrow night is a happening thing Who's bringing the beer?

raeh1
I still get my water whether is is high tide/ low tide. Rainy/ sunny. 1-3 metre swell. I think like this. The sea has storms so does my tank. I reckon the corals love it. It oh naturalle.. Plus since I surf theie is no point collecting when there is no swell...
chimera
the reason you shouldnt collect at low tide or as the tide is going out is thats typically when you get run-off from the land, even more so after heavy rain. with the incoming tide at least its seawater from deeper out thats come in. seahorsemad
hmm was wanting to collect more water tonight too. Whats the weather like in whangaparoa tonight Chimera as it is raining here now
raeh1
I collect from Maui Bay boat ramp. Its just open ocean from there. High tide or low tide. If I could see far enough I could probably see Australia. Raglan is different from Auckland though. 1.2 million people and a harbour versus 10,000 (max) people and open ocean. beachy
Bummer its raining, i was gonna go get some water from Herald island tonight. Do you guys trust Takapuna beach for getting water? isnt it quite polluted, my brother in law got really sick from swimming there. best to get it bang on high tide, after a few clear days. cheers
ghostface
alot of us get water from takapuna boat ramp - however cookie extreme saw something on telly saying takapuna beach was polluted. i dont think anyone has had problems with water from there, as long as you get it near / at high tide, and there has been no rain for a while
cookie extreme
true, the program on tele did samples after heavy rain with lots of runoff going into takapuna beach. i don't think anyone would be stupid enough to collect it after a heavy rain. shaneo
hey chimera where do you get your water from in whangaparaoa? I get mine at matakatia at high tide, gets deep real quick and is allways crystal clear.
chimera
from arkles bay usually. concrete boat ramp makes life easier. other than that i take the buckets to work with me and pick some up from taka boat ramp on the way home.
suphew
I have seen 2 stroke water pumps for $299 which could be great for this type of thing. I saw it in a lawn mower shop in Hamilton Pies and I use a bulge pump we went halfs in from trademe, cost $60 runs off 12v so just plugs into the car takes us about 1/2 hour to collect 400l to do both our tanks, very good investment
