QT

anyone else done one yet?

as soon as the new skimmer arrives, the refugium will be "tapped" so it can be bypassed from the display and sump thus doubling as a QT tank :D best of both worlds, a hopefully happier fish because of the live food plus quality water from the main system

Yup, got three fish in now waiting to hit the display. A bit of a PITA, but worth it in the long run, I think.

Its a bit of a pain, but not too bad.....wotrth it though eh?

Once you start one, you see the inportance very quickly.

its only 40 litres with LR and an air skimmer.

Change 20% every two or three days.

(Not running copper).

Dont like it unless necessary.

Have you guys researched the QT setups?? Is there any point doing it if your not going to do it right? I'm not saying I know better than you, but reading on Reefcentral

"Careful thought must be put into the tank decorations. Calcareous materials should be avoided as calcium carbonate absorbs copper. This causes two problems if treatment with copper is necessary:

1. It will be difficult to maintain the correct level of copper as the absorption by the calcium carbonate will take the copper out of solution.

2. A drop in pH can cause the copper to be released back into solution potentially causing lethal doses of copper. "

This pretty much rules out using your refuge as a QT and having LR in there.

"The fish should be left in the quarantine tank for at least four weeks. Six weeks gives more time for observation"

I've actually also read 2 months before as well.

Well some of us have dude! :D

My QT is using that eheim glass media stuff in a cannister to avoid this problem :D

You take out the LR when using copper and put it back in later for normal operation.

I only use copper when necessary and with fusy fish.

But then you're left with possibly infected live rock and you're just reintroducing the disease/parasite when you put the live rock back.

As far as I was aware, fish aren't so sensitive to nitrate, so I don't see what's wrong with using a cannister filter/something similar and regular waterchanges?

yeah, youre probably right.

its just good for ph and bacteria.

probably not use it actually just to be safe.

godd for the fish to hide though.

If you want things for them to hide in you could just use regular rocks, works just fine for FW.;)

I've been thinking it would be interesting to set up a marine tank that looks like a FW tank, driftwood and stuff...

How come noone uses the various macroalgaes that are around(in the display)? I saw an old reef book and they had some quite nice looking "greenery" along with their corals.

Feelers, it is done, SteveA run a couple of tanks in commercial buildings that are doing it. But there are two problems, first some fish (like tangs) will eat it, which makes it pretty much impossible to keep if you have these fish. Second, if you dont have fish that eat it, it takes over your tank so you are forever in the tank pulling it out, it is bad for the other corals to have you hands in the tank. It's very difficult to have middle ground.

I am trying to rid my refugium of macro algae with little success. Its tanking over and driving me insane. Can't wait for it to be gone forever.
