Dark
A short while ago my fluval 404 was not running all that smoothly, so i took it apart for servicing. I did find a couple of hundred snails that were breeding in there (none in the main tank, only in the filter, the white bumpy things in the picture are their egg clusters...) more interestingly though, i found this: click image for larger shot (1600x1200) Any ideas? Dark
the snails i do keep - the knife fish love them Although at the speed they are starting to multiply i think you'll be able to have some the plant, i think is perhaps some kind of seaweed, although i'm stumped because it is growing in a fresh water tank! livebearer_breeder
Had that grow in my fluval aswell Shae
Caryl
What about it being a small piece of Java moss looking pale and weedy from lack of light?
Lucid
What does/did it feel like, was it squidgy or hard. It looks almost like a type of fungi, when looked at closely, but Caryl, could be on the money with the java moss. B
Dark
squidgey, rubbery, slightly furry on the legs, but the bits that stick up are rubbery and balloon like...
Lucid
I wonder if it is a type of mould or fungi, not sure if there are types that stay submerged and the bits that stick up could be a seed pod of sorts. B
livebearer_breeder
Not Java Moss. It Sticks Hard! Shae
alanmin4304
I'll go with the light starved Java moss (unless its a trifid)
Snowman
I get the same thing in the bottom of my Ehaim cannisters, i had put it down to some form of low light algae.

jude
I go with Triffids - and all those little pods contain hundreds of baby triffids
Interfecus
That's not java moss. I would guess it's an encrusting type of algae, but would need to look under a microscrope to get a better idea. It could also be a fungus or myxomycete, but it's probably just an alga. Caryl
In other words, you have no idea either  I think the others may be right - triffids! :bounce:
Modern Angl
I've also found this stuff in several tanks of mine as well, you prolly got it from me, think of it as a fair swap for all the snails and duckweed
Dark
tim: i can supply you with a sample if you are interested in taking a closer look. now, i know many of you believe that i am breeding triffids, and i must stress that there is no undue panic required. Of course i'm not in a position to confirm, nor deny, that i am breeding triffids, but rest assured that their day will come, yes my pretties... one day... Dark
hey MA, ltns. I'm wondering if it came with.. hang on, i gave you duck weed? i didn't even have any myself! na, i'm wondering if it is from the gravel we picked up. I would think that there is also a fair amount of salt in the gravel left over from our washing attempts which might be enough for it to survive. as for your duckweed, i have a tank full of duckweed cures that i'm happy to lend you
