GeeTee
I have been looking into a filter for my tank(first tank).I have been through the posts on here and eheim and jebo come up a bit. I have found on ebay some canister filters, jebo 835,jebo 815,fluval 204. They are a good price to any I've seen in shops or on the net. Haven't heard a lot on the fluval, what would your opinion be on them as they seem to be a good buy with 3 year warrany, the jebo's come with 6 months. the tank is 80cm x 40cm x 40cm about 120 litres. What is recommended for a light for this tank? Thanks Greg
Brianemone
i like the fluvals personally. lighting all depends on what you want to put in the tank, ie heavily planted with high lighting requirments or one or two easy going plants
GeeTee
Being my first tank I don't think I will plant it out to heavy just a few to start. Greg
Snowman
I have 3 Eheims and can recommend them, bit dearer than Jebo or Fluval but they have proven themselves to be reliable and do an awesome job, guppy fry even live in the bottom of my 2213's for a month or so till cleaning time. Lighting wise, a 3ft single tube would do the trick but as i found, if you want more plants it means another light, so if you buy a 3ft twin tube and only turn on one tube when/if you plant more you will have the lighting capacity to suit. GeeTee
Thanks snowman that's a great idea with the lighting. Greg
madcookie
Gidday Geetee, I have three Eheim 2213's too, and a Fluval 304. The modern eheims, and the 4 series Fluvals, are nice pumps. The 204 is more than adequate for your tank even moderately stocked, However, they arent cheap. Eheim 'classic' canisters arent very popular these days, as they are not self priming. But they do last forever and ever...and do their job well - that is filter the water. They are also coming up cheap these days on the second hand market......Recommend the 2213 Eheim for around $70 - $80 NZ dollars complete with filter media.. Jo1
I would just love to know where one can purchase a 2213 for $70-$80 NZ Dollars. That is way below wholesale price and I would imagine they would be at least $200 retail. I too would have to recommend Eheim. They last forever and the only thing likely to need replacing would be the occassional impellor. We have used a few Fluvals but much prefer eheim cannister filters. Wok
I have only ever used Fluvals and can highly recommend them as they haven't broken down or anything go wrong for the past 4 years
Caryl
I would say to avoid the Eheim wet/dry filters but understand the others are good but I have not personally used them so can't comment. I have 2 Fluval 404's. Both go OK but water flow drops dramatically and quickly once on a tank! They are both (old and new models) difficult to pull apart to clean. The new one (now 3 or 4 years old I think at least) has recently broken both the impellor and the plastic bit the hose attaches to so had to buy replacement parts. Had difficulty getting an impellor for it as no-one had them. Recently purchased 2 Jebos and they are going brilliantly with much greater flow than the Fluvals. Have only had them since early in the year so can't comment on reliability over time yet but so far I am pleased with them.
suphew
I run two Fluval 204's now 2-3 years old, never had a problem with them, happy to reccomend them.
Snowman
$70-$80 is a second hand price through the likes of trade me, new Hollywood has them for $170 and that is the cheapest i have found in Auckland. The bit i like with the classic is spend $20odd dollars on an impellor and shaft and its like new again, the clips to hold the lid on are metal so they don't break. malawi_man
tropical blues has eheim 2213's for $170 and if you are a fnzas affiliated club member then you can get 10% offf that as well - $153 I have an eheim 2213, 2215 and 3 fluval 404's. i reckon the fluvals are better for the more messy types of larger fish because they are better at getting bigger particles. I think the eheims are probably better for smaller tanks with plants etc. because they have finer filtration. So for your tank i would reccommend an eheium 2213, i dont think the priming is a hassle really because you dont actually have to prime it much but i suppes that is up to you. i have heard from people on other forums that the new jebo 828 is the best thing that ever happened to them, they reckon it is better than the fluvals.
