Yeah, that's about the right price for a cheap one. Remember you're talking a "Fridge" designed for a 100% duty cycle using expensive titanium and stainless steel rather than cheap copper and steel with a higher quality thermostat, different plumbing for the heat exchanger for the water. Sales of about .001% the volume...
blueether
they are a fridge, with a titanium condenser. I paid 400 for my 1/2 hp one but it was quite old. Cant see the TM listing to comment on it but it does sound pricey. EDIT: found it - turn waikato off  New thay are expensive, second hand they can be had a bit cheaper . disgustipated
i have often wondered/asked about cheaper, diy alternatives to water chillers. there are a few options out there, can't be bothered explaining, have a look around.
blueether
If you want to buy new give hollywoods a ring for their prices. I have DIY'd a chiller before, untill all the magic leaked out There are two main issues with DIY'd ones, heat transfer and/or toxic copper

M@.
I was looking at these ones the other day http://www.airpumps.co.nz/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4 all except one below the $500 mark (including three Resun ones) think they are all for smaller tanks than the one on trademe is capable of though. anyone know what the Hailea ones are like? blueether
If you want to work out the size chiller needed then hovmoller has made a heatloss calculator viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48031 that will work just as well cor cooling. Just remember at every light/pump/etc will add more heat to the system that will need to be removed
