amtiskaw
Does anyone know where to purchase glutaraldehyde in NZ? It's the active component in Flourish Excel, and apparently you can get it a lot cheaper than what you pay for the Seachem stuff.
livingart
it is used as a biocide and for preserving specimens will get rid of common warts as well http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalo ... utaral.pdf
peet
So where can we get it???? I dose it daily into my tank.... Wld be nice to find a cheaper source
JaSa
If you know how to use Google you will find at least 2 sources to get it from here in NZ. BUT that stuff is that dangerous I wouldn't want it anywhere near me or my pets - just check out the MSDS, shocking... Cheers, JaSa
blueether
The first listed is 2% so is not that much stronger than excel, I think i remember seeing that it was 1.7%?

I've always been aware of the dangers of using Excel, and I never let it contact my skin. :smln: http://www.seachem.com/support/MSDS/FlourishExcel.doc.pdf

Insectile
So is breathing in the fumes from Flourish Excel or getting it on your skin not recommended?
amtiskaw
I wouldn't gargle with it :slfg: From what I've been reading, you can become sensitive to it from repeated exposure. So to be on the safe side I keep it away from my skin, watch out for splashes getting in my eyes and wash my hands immediately if it does contact them. You can nuke your bio-filter if you go over the top dosing Excel, but we're talking 5 X recommended dose type levels. My twisted val melted when I first started using it, but it's come away again and is growing like crazy now. It's not thought to be carcinogenic, but it is toxic and an irritant. http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/htdocs/LT_rpts/tr490.pdf
blueether
two first time doses of excel (2 x 5ml doses in a 50L tank) over the last two days has helped to clear most of the algae off many of the plants - did have lots of greenspot and hair algae. rabid
I found a place to order it , but minimim order 2 units @ $120 + gst per 5l unit. So if it were the major acting ingredient in excel, it would work out about half price to buy it this way, from this supplier (ebos)
amtiskaw
That's the only one I've found so far, too. I'm wondering what the buffering agent is? It's probably harmless, but I'd like to know before I buy some. https://online.ebos.co.nz/default.cfm?a ... e=25135186 They say it's stable for a year, too :bounce: https://online.ebos.co.nz/images/produc ... 20Plus.pdf
blueether
with only a 50% saving, not knowing what other additives are in it, having to dilute it back, minimum order of $240 plus haz-chem freight... I don't think I'll be getting any.
alanmin4304
What is the concentration of active ingredient in what you are looking at compared to excel?
amtiskaw
2% vs 1.5% for Excel, Alan "AIDAL PLUS contains a corrosion inhibitor" Bugger, probably
amtiskaw
I struck out finding pure aqueous glutaraldehyde solution in NZ. All the suppliers I tried had other chemicals, surfactants, etc, in the mix

SamH
These are reviews/feedback from one of the bottles you linked. By Brian Olivier I ordered this to use in my planted aquariums. This is a great, more concentrated, alternative to the popular carbon supplements that are used in planted tanks. It works well when properly diluted (1 & 1/2 part distilled water to one part Glute) and stored in a light-proof bottle. I only took off one star due to the much higher price per ounce compared to the 1 gallon bottle (which was out of stock when I ordered this) combined with the cost of shipping. When something like this product is ordered for the sole purpose of saving money over a brand name specialty item the amount saved becomes the key issue. This is an excellent item and offers some real savings. If you are looking to use this for a small aquarium, or just to supplement a larger CO2 supplied tank, this 1 quart 14 day Glute is a fine option. But, if you have a large or multiple tanks, or you just want to make your money go as far as possible, the savings offered by the 1 gallon version is much much better. By Zoea Warnick i use it as an alternative to seachem excel. it also works well with killing algae in aquariums, i had an outbreak and it cleared it up without harming my fish, which are very sensitive!! Dr A
Would you need some sort of Dangerous Goods permit wouldn't you?
amtiskaw
Yep. That's if you find one that ships to NZ in the first place.
Dr A
So you're best off talking to a logistics company, and there goes any potential savings.
