SamH
I think it's more about dissolved oxygen, do you have CO2 running on that warm tank? An airstone or filter breaking the surface? I just recommended colder because the design of that tank looks like it won't disturb the surface much although I could be wrong.
F15hguy
:iag: my tanks are lightly stocked planted tanks with a 2 outlet air driven undergravel, so lotsa surface agitation. btw had a dwarf puffer in with them for a week now, no killings yet

F15hguy
Did you buy that one retarded fish again? I always fall for the defective ones :nilly: I had a collection of retarded fish, including hermaphrodite guppies (colour of a male, size of a big female), A gold severum with no top jaw (looked like the muppet aliens) a jewel with no tail, many different balloon fish. my ultimate aim was to get a 2 headed molly. fishguy, do you think you might be able to send me some shrimp? im not having any luck finding these things. not right now cause I dont have the setup but in future, ill pay for time and shipping if you want? or do you know of a creek in hamilton or rotorua where I could find them? im not too keen on shipping NZ natives around, im sure there is some one more local that will help you locate some, or else if your in TGA look me up and i'll show you a couple of spots. F15hguy
seriously, considering the number of Hami pplz, around here im surprised with the lack of response. Head west would be my best advise, try and organise a collection trip with someone like Blueether.

The problem I have is I'm working too hard during the week and on the weekends I have a house to do up but I will be heading out to raglan some time in the next few weeks... tandemcartshrimp
if you could give locations ill just catch the Hamilton to raglan bus over with a couple of mates and just make a trip of it all? just so you dont need to take time off anything or worry about anything like that
tandemcartshrimp
also, do these shrimp like going through stones and stuff, or could I have a fully covered base? the stick thing in the photo will be there and I plan on having some plants growing from that. F15hguy
most of the time they are motoring around your tank looking for detritus, as long as the stone aint razor sharp you will not have a problem.

They really have to motor as that detritus is damn fast
tandemcartshrimp
so, a couple of questions. if my filter set up ( in the previous photos ) alright? will the oxygen be high enough just using that? and what kind of plant will I need as a ground cover type thing? I like the look of some hair grass in some tanks and will be looking to get some of that to break up the ground cover. and maybe some java moss pressed into the driftwood. also, do i need to do anything to the drift wood before its used in the tank?
SamH
It's hard to tell, if it doesn't seem to then you can always lower the water so the filter breaks the surface more. Hairgrass is good and isn't too hard to grow, some Java Fern would do well too. Driftwood doesn't need to be messed with.
tandemcartshrimp
apart from the shrimp dying, how do I know if there is enough dissolved oxygen?
tandemcartshrimp
so I have seen some java moss on TM is that kind of thing any good? or should I get it from a store?
SamH
In my experience, TradeMe sellers give more per $ than the store.
disgustipated
apart from the shrimp dying, how do I know if there is enough dissolved oxygen? if you have bubbles in the tank, whether from the filter or an air pump, you can be pretty sure there is enough dissolved oxygen. the smaller the bubbles, the better. Sophia
Is that true? I'm asking because I don't know - I thought fast moving current was an indicator of dissolved oxygen. When I was reading up on hillstream loaches I think it said something like the faster the river, the more oxygen they get, which is what they need. To be in a truer biotope shrimp would need something similar. I'm not saying don't keep shrimp in an aquarium however, I've done that myself. disgustipated
well, i'm never 100% sure. but logically, if you have bubbles, oxygen will be dissolving.. i guess the faster moving the current is, the more "white" water there will be, and the more bubbles get in the water from splashes and turbulence on the surface... alanmin4304
Water has a greater afinity for O2 than CO2. You can drive the CO2 from drinking water by aerating it. What you are doing is increasing the surface area of the volume of water
