ZombieFish
whats the significance or using cinder blocks? like, I'm pretty sure they didn't use them traditionally - is it just a western adaptation that they don't do in japan, or is it just a new thing cause they are strong? Scarletmonuka
whats the significance or using cinder blocks? like, I'm pretty sure they didn't use them traditionally - is it just a western adaptation that they don't do in japan, or is it just a new thing cause they are strong? cinder blocks are simply the most readily availble and cheapest form of concrete blocks. we also break bricks, paving stones and coconuts... your right back in the day in china they didn't break concrete they broke people in battle. We don't have that ability so we use concrete and the likes to show that our training is working. (both to ourselves and others). Kung Fu is Chinese Yes you are right. karate is japananese. our style is based on a northern shoulin style that also encorparates (sp) tai chi when you get to black belt level
Caryl
Our practice manager is a black belt in Tai kwon do and she often chats with one of our patients who is also a black belt in the same martial art. Both have managed to injure themselves over the years, no need to injure others! Jo has had broken fingers and a foot plus a shoulder injury and Mike has had a number of serious injuries. One of them we won't let him forget as he tore his shoulder demonstrating how to fall correctly :slfg:
alanmin4304
I think more people turn up at A&E from rugby than martial arts.
jackp
Yeah, but more people play rugby than do martial arts
alanmin4304
No. Martial arts fighting is more disciplined and they don't get distracted chasing a ball and can concentrate better on the fighting.

One of them we won't let him forget as he tore his shoulder demonstrating how to fall correctly :slfg: Our breakings aren't power based.. i mean i'm 5 foot 3 and 57 kgs... and as you can see by the vids i'm not hitting it insanely hard so the chances of breaking hands doing it is pretty damn slim (unless you do it wrong). Also we point spar (Light to medium contact). as apposed to full contact. so hurting eachother that way is quite slim too. Mind you i nearly got knocked out by my oponent at last years nationals as i walked into a kick that he threw a bit hard and caught me under the shaw with the base of his heal
Squirt
How long have you been doing Kung Fu for? (I've done ten years of martial arts, and I have never broken a bone.)

Sophia
is the breaking of stuff with your hands part of the grading or just an additional thing that some people like to do?
Scarletmonuka
from black belt onwards its part of your gradings. because part of the training is teaching your body and mind to do it so you are graded on it
