Trilobite
My aquarium light bulb blew today and I was wonderimg if I could just go out and get a cheap, normal bulb from bunnings to replace it. Im not trying to grow plants so ut doesnt need to be a fancy bulb or anything. Would this work?
David R
well if it will fit your light fitting then obviously it will work in the sense that it will illuminate the tank, your fish aren't going to die from having a non-aquarium bulb! You may find the colour looks too yellow though, IIRC they're dirt cheap so no great loss if you don't like it.
alanmin4304
If it is a standard type tube you would be OK. I think some imported tanks have specialty tubes and wont fit a standard one.
F15hguy
imo they are ok, not quite as good and make your fish look a bit washed out. but it makes your plants look freakishly green
blueether
I think you will want the ones labeled with '865'
Ira
I usually just use cool white lights.

Sheepsnana
Check out Lighting Plus also. Might not be as cheap as Bunnings, but could be higher quality.
livebearer_breeder
look for the 24watt compact fluorescent bulbs that are cool white or 6500k. work perfectly, look great, good plant growth, cost about $6, can get a $10 white clip on lamp for it. F15hguy
I stick with warm white as it makes my shrimps prettier and im only interested in algae growth
livebearer_breeder
Can't imagine how, its very washed out and the colour of urine, also 6500k grow algae just perfectly, i have tank with tiny tetra and minnow fry that have and algae blanket they feed on so at 7 days i cant feed vinegar eels and microworms and don't have to worry about green water. F15hguy
it makes the red in the shrimps shine a bit better, plus they are kinda the colour of urine anyways (and the bulbs were free)
