superico Posted April 10, 2013 Author Report Share Posted April 10, 2013 went and refilled the co2 bottle today and i was surprised that it cost $40 to refill 3.5 kgs of co2. i also replaced my light bulbs with these bulbs from lamp specialists Christchurch because it has now already been a year that my tank has been running. $5.50 each. this is the old ones compared with the new ones (both pics have exactly the same setting and are shot with the same white balance) old: new: glosso is coming along well plus thanks for the compliments Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Joe Posted April 10, 2013 Report Share Posted April 10, 2013 Remember that those new bulbs you purchased are probably made for industrial use, and although they should grow plants alright, specially-made aquarium bulbs will provide a more aesthetically pleasing lighting option. A Plant Pro is definately a good idea :thup: Also with a lot of aquarium bulbs, kelvin rating is just a marketing gimmick that you should ignore. I've found that bulb colours are generally very different to the specified kelvin rating. For example, when I had my tank running, I had a Hagen AquaGlo bulb rated at 18,000K. In reality this would be quite blue, but the bulb was actually a nice crisp white colour with a pink tint that made the colours of my plants and fishes look great. Can you come put rocks in my tank? :sml2: As for the CO2, if you go to Air Liquide in Hornby, it is only about $30 per fill-up. At CTest/Sai Global on 52 Hayton Rd, it is $37 per fill-up. Lighting Specialists are great! Cheap lights that really do the job. I agree with you though, it's nice to have the pink light to round out the colours a bit. In reality this would be quite blue, but the bulb was actually a nice crisp white colour with a pink tint that made the colours of my plants and fishes look great. i have looked into power glos (the t5 equivalent) and i do like the pink tone which the plant pro also has. just the new bulbs being took away the colour of the rocks. i will be adding the leds soon (6000-6500k) and will post pics of the process. i managed to get some fittings for them at redpath for $5 each so once i get the pvc pipe they fit into i will install them. the 'glosso' has sent roots to the ground and might be pulling its self down to the substrate which will make it a carpet :happy2: next time i refill i will definitely have a look around. the only reason i didn't was because i wanted to keep the co2 up; exchange the bottle as fast as possible because if there was a big drop the would be algae. cheers superico n Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
superico Posted April 16, 2013 Author Report Share Posted April 16, 2013 fts update: all plants are growing well. most of the crypts have melted off their lower leaves but still have a few leaves. the glosso has grown really well, but is just not turning into its aquatic form nor is it carpeting . most of the lower leaves have started turning yellow so i am questioning whether it really is proper glosso or some different species. if it doesn't work i will give hairgrass another shot. riccia is growing well i upped the co2 after the refill Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Try bending the glosso over and planting both ends, you can see the roots shooting out at the nodes. even if it was another species, it should still grow fine all needs are meet. peet Posted April 20, 2013 Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 I have also got wild glosso in my tank and have found it takes quite a long time to adjust to tank light and temp i.e. Months!!!! Adrienne Posted April 20, 2013 Report Share Posted April 20, 2013 I have two types of glosso in my tank, one carpeting and one that grows as a bushy plant. Perhaps you have the second.
