SamH
am not sure it's natural all the time though? Sorry what? :-? I can tell I'll be wasting a lot less CO2, it just looks like I've properly carbonated the tank now :nilly:
F15hguy
whats you pH doing when its like that???
SamH
No idea, my drop checker has been giving me false readings and the new flow made it fly off the wall and into the Rotala. Will fix it soon but the fish don't seem to mind
Godly3vil
Hey Sam are you using 4dkh water and ph reagent inside your drop checker or just the test fluid that comes with it?
Sophia
I meant that I wasn't sure that carbon dioxide bubbles like that was a natural state for most fish to live in all the time. never mind :cofn:
SamH
Hey Sam are you using 4dkh water and ph reagent inside your drop checker or just the test fluid that comes with it? Yeah it's mostly 4dkh water, couple of drops of reagent. It changes colour and everything but it goes way past yellow before the fish start gasping. I meant that I wasn't sure that carbon dioxide bubbles like that was a natural state for most fish to live in all the time. never mind :cofn: They like the bubbles 8)
SamH
Well here we are at the 4 week mark and everything's not quite going to plan. The algae on the wood is still there despite reducing the photoperiod, I have a feeling the wood itself is releasing something so if it's not gone soon then the wood is outta here! My inline CO2 diffuser that looked so promising has blocked itself, one of the tubes popped off yesterday due to back pressure and I'm soaking it in bleach now so back to the old ceramic diffuser! The powerhead are great, not too powerful so getting much better flow in the tank. Plant growth is okay but getting really impatient with the brown algae. F15hguy
sounds like a lot of fun !!!! looking good despite the setbacks. It'll be worth it when its perfect (then you will want to change it)
SamH
sounds like a lot of fun !!!! looking good despite the setbacks. It'll be worth it when its perfect (then you will want to change it) Thanks! It is quite fun despite the constant frustrations, be a bit easier if I wasn't so pedantic about the tank. I'm wanting to change it already, I get bored fairly quickly

SamH
I think in another month it'll be due for a rescape anyways, a tank like this reaches it's peak fairly quickly with no slow growing plants.
F15hguy
messing with your tank is the best part of it.... unless you get the strangeness I have with my Mudflat tank where its constantly changing and perfectly balanced.... I couldnt bear to change it except to remove a few cone snails.... btw had a baby chiton show up the other day.....
SamH
Monday blues caused me to remove the driftwood and hack down most of the stems. Wasn't sure how to go about the chain sword so I just left it but it's about the only thing that's going right in this tank. It'll be interesting to see how/if the tank recovers by Saturday. Joe
It looks very open without the wood. Looking amazing as always Sam
F15hguy
It looks very open without the wood. Looking amazing as always Sam +1 maybe some taller rocks like walling schist just to give some height without the algae problems (plus may help buffer against CO2 pH changes)
SamH
Yeah I miss the wood already but the algae was just too much of an eyesore. If it still looks naked once the plants gain height, I'll have to add rocks I think.
F15hguy
you can do amazing things with marsden walling schist
Joe
Ryuo-Seki rocks would look cool. Not sure if they're available in NZ though, but I'm sure you could get something similar. Or you could use schist like F15hguy said
SamH
If my calculations (counting on my fingers) is correct, this is the 5th week this tank has been filled. Big changes after this, pulling out most of the chain sword, it's just doing TOO well in this tank and starting to really take over. The brown hair algae is going grey so fingers crossed it continues to die. And finally, getting some hairgrass in exchange for the chain sword. Should look heaps different by next update. phoenix44
Make sure you don't lose your scape - nip it in the but while you can!
SamH
Yeah that's the idea. The scape is really dull at the moment, it's awesome when the stems have some height but right now it's nothing
