Mad Whip
So where are you getting the frogs from?
henward
from TM, just got them, got 60 tadpoles, about 4 to 5 didnt make the transition but they are eating this morning now and settled in. have a frog tank to put frogs into when they turn. Squirt
Going to have to have a big tank for 60 green and golden bell frogs... And a lot of food to feed them with...
alanmin4304
If the frogs poison the arowana will you get it stuffed. I suppose it will be already.
henward
I have a plan. anyways, we can see:) yeah, the frogs will require plenty of food. Will get flies for them, lots of them, flies are relatively cheap in bulk!! cage is a large exoterra cage.
myfishybuisness
I have a plan. what is your plan ?
Insect Direct
If the frogs poison the arowana will you get it stuffed. I suppose it will be already. :sml2: 60 frogs could easily eat about 300 flies a day. $25 per 500 flies. $100 a wk to feed them on just flies, duh winner. Plan fails... dead arowana ... priceless
Ismart120
Paying for flies? I used to just catch them in a butterfly net outside on the vege garden, free!
Insect Direct
yeah, but for 50-60 frogs? you get what you pay for. put tub in tank and hey presto. beats running around catching random dirty flies. fly traps are another way. i like to know where my food comes from though. can always breed your own, not as smelly as traps but still not much fun and then just depends how much you value your time. livingart
flies are not very nutritious
henward
to be honest, i dont really care what to feed them, what is the cheapest? thought flies would be. mealworms? i am unsure how many would survive to adulthood and it is my little experiment. i am not trying on my own fish first, i will have a trial case. dont really wanna go into it:) seeing that no o ne has given feedback on feeding arowanas and fish frogs.... i will have to find out myself. what would be the most cost effective way to feed them? Insect Direct
what do you hope to gain from feeding frogs to your fish? higher parasite load? i really don't get it please enlighten me....
henward
you cant really understand, each to their own ay. i like watching it hunt different things man. i have locust, crickets, fish, mealworms and hopefully frogs. its something that some wont understand - if frogs prove to be a pain, i will just sell it cheaply to flog it off, dont really care. parasite wise - dont think they have parasites if you raise them from tadpoles and flies and live food you feed tehm from reputable suppliers are fine, as i feed thsoe to the arowana too. its only when they hang around and eating flies feeding on poo and other crawling things in the wild. also arowanas and most fish are geared to eat live food. but like i said, you wont understand, its a personal thing ay, i just get a kick out of seeng it hunt different things. Squirt
Hmm Cons: Poisonous Potentially kill Brutus Cost of keeping frogs ($10-20 per week=$520-$1K per year) Potentially introduce parasites into aquarium and possibly kill other fish Frogs grow slow take 3 years to get to decent size=3K Inhumane IMO Most expensive option to feed arowana They'll eat each other They take up a lot of room to keep (were talking 50L per frog=3000L tank=$$$) Pros: Arowana gets a variation from the normal I don't get it as well :dunno: Edit Also think about the pain of keeping the flies in. And the maintainence, if you don't keep it up they'll get sick=sick arowana. And also the frog doesn't die quickly, the arowana will bite it breaking it's bones, and munch the internal organs, then the arowana will swim around and not immediately eat it. :dunno:
henward
yeah, look i cant really explain it, i bought the tadpoles and couldnt back out of the deal so im stuck with them. mgiht as well try but like is aid have a plan, wont try on brutus
livingart
a couple of bathtubs outside 2 inch x 2 inch framing timber 6 foot high windbreak over it to enclose tadpoles in bath breeding your own flies is easy rushes etc for plants
hovmoller
Just feed him the 60 tadpoles and be done with this frog thing.. IMO this is the most stupid thing you have wondered if you can feed your fish yet. But as you say... I wouldn't understand

livingart
bathtubs free framing $35 mesh $20 plants free disease no problems
henward
the notion of just growing the tadpoles large and then ridding of them by selling them off cheap has crossed my mind. who wants to buy 60 tadpoles ?
livingart
give you $5 for them
Squirt
What about maintainence? I know it's not expensive, but what's it all for? I know I'm not henward so I wouldn't know. Also if you plan on building a mesh cage, how do you keep flies in? @Henward, so you bought 60 tadpoles for $60 just chuck them up on TM for a $1 reserve. You'll probably get about $40+
