Auckland Fish Shops?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I am heading to Auckland this weekend and would like to know the best fish shops to go to. Looking for discus but really like to see big range of fish and products. I know Hollywood is great but are there more that are just as good?

Thanks,

Malcolm.

Aqua Village

39 Neilson Street, Onehunga, Auckland City, Auckland.

Its new but the best petshop in Auckland if your into Discus you wont need to go anywhere else.

Cheers

Jono

Aqua Village is interesting but am not sure of the hours, would pay to ring in advance to find out. Aquaworld in Target Rd Wairau (North Shore) has lots of saltwater fish and corals I thought was cool and some freshwater too. HFF Mt Roskill is my favourite for the variety of fish, products and knowledge and HFF Albany is similar but a bit more spacious. HFF have the best deals for dry stuff and usually their plants are good also. The Animates stores around are all OK but don't have anything particular specialised that I've noticed, but they often have useful specials on other bits. Pupuke Aquarium Centre in Pupuke Rd Birkenhead is another small but interesting store. There is a big fish n pet store at Takanini, forgotten the name. If you had to choose one store though, HFF MR has the most different kinds of fish overall.

In my experience Animates is overpriced for both dry products and fish, unless they have a special on. Also best to take a real good look at the fish before purchase - often see lots of dead fish in the tanks.

I've been to Aqua Village as well. Not bad, but unless you're after discus, it's a bit of a drive. Pretty standard fare, fish-wise.

You might be wrong about the bird barn on Lincoln Road :D . They have a dedicated fish person in there now that has completely revamped the fish room and stocked the tanks up with a good variety of fish at pretty good prices. I did the rounds on saturday and visited hollywoods, bird barn and a couple of other places. Bird barn had the best selection of fish at the best prices. Got a dwarf puffer for $12.00 and enough Java fern to fill a three foot tank for $5.00. I am a pretty happy customer

Will have to check out aqua village tomorrow on the way to work, haven't been there before.

Birdbarn can be good, would also look at Animates just down the road if you're out there as they're one of the better ones in Auckland IME.

Both HFF's are probably the best all round IMO though.

Bird Barn's my local for specialized fish - got my arowana/ ornate/ albino senegalus/ delhezi/ fire eel there. Geez, come to think of it, I think I should be getting trade discounts at this rate! *hint, hint!*
