Umm, where do you guys get your tank stands from???

I can't find anything that is sturdy enough.. and in my price range..

I am probably going to get someone to make one from me, but just asking if there is an easier way??

The tank i need a stand is my to-be-'Asiam' biotope (just noticed the typo..) l, I keep forgetting to measure it, so I don't know the dimensions.

Also.. how much gravel will I need.. will 20kg be enough??

Mitre 10 mega and bunnings will cut wood for you, the cutting fee is very reasonable. Then you just need a drill bit and some screws. I built the stand for my 4 foot, out of treated pine so it could have been a fair bit cheaper, for around $40 - $50. Have a look into it, I delayed setting up that tank because I couldn't afford to get a stand made, nor could I find something suitable at the hospice (another option) once I bit the bullet and got under way it was a piece of cake.

It's really not that hard to do yourself. Just draw a detailed drawing of the stand both front and end view, first mark in your over all size: height, width, depth, then you have to take into account the thickness of the material you're using.

for example, if your cabinet is 900mm long and you're using 21 mm MDF then your base would be 858mm long.

Remember that if your tank is over about a meter long then for safety reasons you need to have a center division that goes all the way to the floor and supports the top.

usually your cutting list would look like this

2 x Ends 750x450

1 x Base 858x450

1 x division 700x450

1 x top 900x475

and so on and so forth, the height (or width for horizontal pieces) is always listed first.

The same concept applies if, like Smidey, you decide to build a timber frame stand.

Hopes this helps.
